The Mother Goose is Next for Tough Filly Division
How does Dreaming of Julia stack up in the very tough three year-old filly division? Her performance in the Mother Goose should let us know.

no disrespect meant, you cannot seriously consider this saturdays mother goose a valid race.there are only 5 ,let me correct myself,2 fillies that can be considered good.that is DOJ and close hatches.hatches in her last 2 races has shown she may not be as good as advertised.basically julia is in a 1 1/2 horse field.regarding your comments on the oaks.she was not broadsided.she took up a little.you want to see a horse who got wiped out.look at the princess, she almost got snapped in half.she was behind DOJ down the backstretch.she blew by her and destroyed the field.julia was a normal horse.she was not near the pace because it was not the 4 horse field she was used to running in.this is a public workout.i am just waiting for her to win by 10.then the first post to come in.todd you must pass up the alabama to run her in the travers.her test in her division will come in the alabama, when all of the top fillies run.not this immitation walkover with a G1 listing and a cast of counterfits.

Palace Malice
Hey y'all. I just wanted to share my thoughts on this horse, and ask for y'all opinion. I found his run very intriguing. First off. His first race off a long layoff, he finished 2nd to Majestic Hussar (who just came in 4th in the FOY, setting a blistering pace), well clear of third place finisher. His fourth place finish only compliments Palace Malice, b/c Hussar ran a credible race. This was Palace Malice's first graded stakes try. He came in third, only beaten by about a length (I think). The whole stretch he lugged his head, not too badly, but a little. He got bumped, he drifted. His stretch run was the classic "inexperienced talented horse" much like Goldencents. This isn't a shocker, considering this was only his fourth career start. He showed ability to drop a little further back, rather than 1-2 lengths off the lead. I love his inexperienced, yet long stride. This baby looks like as he matures he might get real good. He only has one more prep to mature until the KY Derby, but still, even if he can't mature in time, he really is a good looking horse for the future. Trust me on this one, there is fire hidden in his young, small body, and there is a great kick hidden in his long stride. It might take him a while to finish the puzzle, and he is still putting pieces together, but when he does, WATCH OUT!

LOL, he is second on my ist. However, I rarely bet front runners in the derby, but right now there aren't many frontrunners, plus Goldy can rate OK.

Crop isn't very strong RIGHT NOW, but still time for a horse to blossom, another two months. I must say, with this one under his belt, watch out for Palace Malace, he is improving every race, and he is learning as he goes along. Hopefully he gets a lot out of his final prep. Or maybe he might have two more? Probably one more prep.

I really like Palace Malice. And remember, he's by Curlin, who got better with age. I'm suspecting you can expect the same from a lot of his foals and I'm thinking Palace Malice will mature into a talented horse. He made my top five (though it has no order atm) with his run today. I liked what I saw and think he can move forward. But you're right, it's a question whether he will be mature enough by Derby time.

rafi, I like Palace Malice, too, but (after watching the race three times) I think he he's a grinder. I think he'll continue to mature and improve, but will mostly grind his way forward the way Curlin did in the Preakness. Has anyone heard or read Rosie's comments re: the race? I haven't heard her describe the ride.

I actually wouldn't mind to see him mature later in his career so he doesn't burn out like some horses do in the beginning or middle of their three year old year.

Ive liked this horse for a while, I cant quiet figure him out. The race today didnt help me. Im not sure if he hung in there with a bunch of talented three year olds, or if he placed third in a weak field. I do agree he could be a late bloomer, then again all he needs is a little improvement in his next race to make the derby. Without a clear cut derby favorite, any horse that starts getting hot at the right time could be wearing the roses in May

I remember watching his maiden on 8/4/12 (Whitney Handicap day). I noticed his stride, immediately jotted his name down. Interesting how he was so hyped as a two year old and progressed to win the 12f Belmont- much like Union Rags. You'd think all the hyped two year old wouldn't stick for 12f.

A Belmont Stakes to Remember
History. Tradition. Not many tracks or “racinos” have it any more. Too many of them feel like “plants” or factories. The biggest one of them all still has that feel, at least to me. I hadn’t been to Belmont since personally witnessing three straight unsuccessful Triple Crown tries – I watched Silver...

Drive on. It was actually a confusing issue at the BC. Bloodhorse published articles calling him a gelding. Equibase and the pps called him a horse. It was confusing enough that the announcers on TVG asked his trainer in an interview was he a gelding or a horse. So your confusion is understandable because many sources were confused as well. On a different note, can't wait to read your analysis of the Pepsi NA cup.

Three-Year-Old Male Division Up for Grabs
In defeating the Preakness winner Oxbow and the Derby winner Orb Palace Malace thrust himself into a leading role in America's glamour division. The decisive win leaves the three year old male division perhaps even more muddied than it was before the Kentucky Derby.

I thought both Orb and Oxbow ran good races in the Belmont. I still think that those two, now along with Palace Malice, are the best of the crop. It looks like the Travers and the fall races against older horses will determine the 3 year old champion, but I think it will be one of the Classic winners if they stay healthy.

I agree Verrazano still has to be part of the conversation. If he were to win the Haskell, stay strong, and take maybe the BC Dirt Mile he may deserve the Eclipse award for 3yo males. Of course who wins the Traverse, Woodward, Pacific Classic, BC Classic, etc. plays in. However, I'm not very optimistic about this crop of 3 year olds beating The Dude & Company

There has never been a champion 3 year old colt that didn't either win a Classic race or win at a classic distance. I don't expect that streak to stop this year. If a horse other than one of the Classic winners is champion 3 year old they will need to win the Travers or beat older horses in the Breeders Cup Classic.

Thats a terrible top 16 list rafirox honestly. Everyone and there mom has revolutionary on there list. Bern Identy just got back to work tab and is shooting for preakness last i heard. Vyjack not on your list I bet you he jumps in on everyones list after a race like that that further proves he can go two turns. Ive Struck a Nerve you call him a fluke yet still have him as one of the top 16 3 year olds? whattttttttt Tix the truth second? Hes injured wont make derby follow the trail better. Park City 2 sprint races 2 wins he will not have enough time to make derby. And last goldencents unlike vyjack cant go farhter then 1 1/16 so hes no derby horse. Srry this is me being a real critic cause wait till bloodhorse drf and all thoes major horsemen bring out there lists and compare.

Quote from article: "NOTE: This list might be invalid after the Gotham." I put ISAN purely b/c he won, but I think he still needs to prove it wasn't a fluke. Park City is a good looking colt, with upside. Goldencents, you have no right to say he can't go a distance, when he hasn't gone nine yet, and ALL his races are respectful efforts. I don't care what DRF, Bloodhorse people say. That don't matter. EVERYBODY has a different list with different horses. I never heard of TTT being off the trail, I apologize if that was wrong. But, besides that, your last post is ridiculous.

I cant say what goldencents can and cant do? vyjack was undefeated before the gotham by the same sire with the same run type untill yestarday and goldencents wasnt undfeated both graded stakes winners and you left vyjack off??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? thats crazy if you like golden cents you should of liked this horse just the same. Lets look at who vyjack beat in his first 3 starts and lets see who goldencents beat in his races. Vyjack beat orb-foy winner -clawback stakes winner always in a tiz- graded stakes palced. As for goldencents he beat no one in his madien in the champagne he was ahead of who??? horses who all are off the trail or ahvent impressed yet. So i see he ebat itsmyluckyday and bern identy? so yea

Personally, I am reserving my judgment of ISAN until after the LA Derby. Desormeaux changed his running tactics for the Risen Star, so I would like to see if that was the real reason for the improvement or if the RS was just a fluke.

Going out on a limb there w/ Palace Malice, rafi. Good to see. A few I'd throw off and on would be ISAN off, we hardly see longshots like that come back and win. Departing on, he has to be one of the best semi under the radar's out there. I wouldn't have a problem dropping Bobby as well. With IMLD and Orb probable for the FL Derby, SB may not even make the derby. I'd drop him for Demonic or Revolutionary. Sorry wasn't slaggin' your picks:)

Nice list! Seems like you have lots of wise crackers and nobdy willing to put up or shut up. So heres my list. 1) Flashback 2) Orb 3) Balance the Books 4) Itsmyluckyday 5) Uncaptured 6) Vyjack 7) Verrazanno 8) Palace Malice 9) Dens Legacy 10) Revolutionary 11) Code West 12) Oxbow 13) Normandy Invasion 14) Goldcents 15) Fortify 16) Treasury Bill. We have 8 horses that are different. I cant recall a derby in recent years that was so wide open in early March. We could all come up with a different #1 on our list

Sorry. At least I am not a loser hiding behind a computer screen, trashing other's picks, too wimpy to post their own. @PP. Yes. I m going out on a limb with Palace Malice. We are in March. Tcglory acting like these picks are "wrong" or "terrible" is ignorant. I really liked Palace Malice's last performance. He came from behind the pace, and showed new dimension. Had trouble in the stretch (bumped, drifted, lugged), looked very green. Palace Malice, imo, is one that will dramatically improve with experience. As for Revolutionary, I know I am in the minority. However, I don't think breaking slowly is a good attribute for the derby, nor is traffic prone. Notice tcglory is laughing at me, and laugh at me all you want... But, personally, while Revolutionary is a good colt, I don't think the derby conditions will fit him. Good horse, good pedigree. Like him a lot, not for derby. @Buds. Thank you. I agree completely. Lots of wise cracks by people who won't put their list out. I like your list, wish you the best in the wagering aspect down the line, and during the trail. @URR. I put Bern on there just for you, lol. :)... Hopefully he can return with a bang. Is he a G1 horse? I don't know. But, for sure, if healthy he will be a good colt down the line at whatever distance. Good luck to all during the trail.

That was a gutsy call to leave both Overanalyze AND Vyjack off this "Pre-Gotham" list... I LIKE IT! WHY? Since when does one's "Derby List" have to include those that are "likely" to break from the starting gate on the 1st Saturday in May? My list (GQ's Derby Double Dozen, from Feb. 9th) doesn't have many of those who will likely RUN for the roses, rather my intent was who IMHO could WIN the race (if they happen to be good enough or sound). Less than 60 days from the Derby, what do people expect? Bravo you your effort.

He looks stupid because your pick for the Derby won the Belmont? Or because no one in your top ten for the Derby finished in the top ten for the Derby? Not so much... I had Oxbow and LD in a box for the Derby future bets, and it came in the Preakness. Means nothing, the box made me $0. You pick PM to win the Derby and he won the Belmont, means nothing.

The Preakness is the easiest Classic to attend, lot less money than the Derby and hotels are a lot cheaper than New York. The race also is the best for determining the 3 year old champion and Baltimore is a great city. Every racing fan should try to attend a Preakness Stakes.

I was fortunate enough to hit the win on P. Malice as well as the exacta and trifecta. It was my biggest payday ever. It didn't surprise me that P. Malice and Oxbow would "stay" at 1 1/2 in the Belmont. Both horses have good dosage numbers. P. Malice is by Curlin and Oxbow is by Awesome Again. Both stout pedigrees.

The Belmont stakes is the most accessible venue. I've attended over 20 Preakness stakes. Both as a youth in the infield and in the best seats in the grandstand. Access to the track is horrible as you navigate the worst and most lengthy traffic jam to get there and parking is horrible unless you buy a parking pass. Public transportation is only by bus and as a practical matter there is nowhere to catch a bus from the suburbs. I've gone to the last 2 Belmont stakes and loved going to New York by train and getting dropped off at the track entrance by subway. The cost of travel, tickets and hotels is far less expensive than the Preakness. I hope they do move the Preakness by building a new track hopefully in the city of Baltimore. It's in horrible run down condition and is located in the slums. If u park outside the track u are harassed by the locals for money, to park on their lawn or to transport your belongings for a fee in their stolen shopping cart. NICE!

It's hard to say that Belmont was unkind to deep closers over the weekend when Calidoscopio came from even further back the day before and won at the same distance. Track conditions weren't the same, but if anything, the mud should have made it harder for a deep closer to win.

Florida Filly, while that is true, that one has shown he can overcome a bias, and do tell me who the horse he got past in the nick of time was? Precussion who nearly wired the field and was several ahead of the third place finisher. On Sat we saw Power Broker not only win, but extend his advantage after a very hotly contended lead. Fast Bullet crused around the track, and while LES did not win, I don't believe he was even beaten a total of one length, after setting a what most would say was a suicidal looking pace. The moisture probably did tighten the track, especially after it was sealed on Friday. However, that single race does not tell me it was kind to closers, simply because Calidoscopio did the same thing over Santa Anita, another track that favored horses near or on the front end the rest of the weekend. He is a horse that can simply run over anything and perform just as potently over surfaces not to his liking. That tells me he is a very good deep closer. Nothing about the track.

icy, acutally they were. Think about it, in order to stay a certain amount behind the horse has to maintain the same pace as the horse in front of them, in order to not fall any farther back. After the first quarter/half positions remain pretty unchanged in stalkers-closers, meaning that after that point they are running at the same speed as the horses ahead of them. The first fractions they run are indeed slower, after that, the individual quarters per horse a pretty close, until the the final stages of the race.

Don't really get your point Laz. They are two different horses ran two very different races in very different era in races with very different pace senarios. Pace makes a race and determines how much energy a horse will have in the final stages, along with other variables, such as trip and surface. In this case you can't compare surfaces from 40 years ago so you compare pace. SB had a more average pace, therefore one would think his final fraction would be swifter. He was a ver talented classic colt and demonstrated that with not just a strong final time, but strong final fractions as well. He developed very well when he was proved that he didn't need to come from far out of it to win. Even in the Belmont he was never more than 6 lengths from the front. As i said a very talented and strong classic colt.

Thanks for the lesson Dani. I guess after all these years I still don’t get it, nor do I understand pace, sustained pace or energy distribution. My bad. You seem to think that these horses have the ability to be top distance horses. I can tell you right now, and I’m not trying to pass myself off as the expert, that on dirt, not one of these horses will ever break 2 minutes for 10F or 2.27 for 12F, at least east of the super highway in California. Like most horses bred for dirt today, they are bred for speed, not endurance. Their maximum distance for optimum performance seems to be 9F. None of them, other than in the SA Derby, even broke 1.50 for 9-F in all the major prep races this year. They staggered home yesterday, it’s as simple as that. Sure they went out and blazed fast early fractions, but when it came time for the endurance factor to take over, it wasn’t there. That’s because they did not have the ability to sustain their pace. That’s not to say that they are not good horses. They are just not good distance horses. It is also important to note that not a lot of them put two good races together going the longer distances. You might say that Oxbow stuck around yesterday, but he was still losing ground to a slow closing winner and the sad part of it was that not one horse could really gain on him in the stretch, and this in a race where every one of the six quarters was slower than the previous quarter.

Why is there not a "tiring" rating for tracks that aren't sloppy any more, but they were the day before and it rained hard all night? That's not what call a fast track. I already know to google the question in hopes of an answer. You guys/gals are interesting, though. I try to learn from all.

I think this is a very good group of 3 year olds. It was a slow time, but you cant knock Palace Malice for that, he didnt set the pace. Pace determines the time. I agree with LAZ that todays horses are bred for speed, but I disagree that the horses in the Belmont lacked stamina. PM looked to me he coulda keep on truckin! I was so happy when Palace Malice and Unlimitted Budget were at 13-1 1nd 15-1. Finally the "Odds Gods" were on my side! I thought for sure 8-1 on both.

"dani.pugh · icy, acutally they were. Think about it, in order to stay a certain amount behind the horse has to maintain the same pace as the horse in front of them, in order to not fall any farther back." dani, here is why I disagree, I had to eyeball this race for trailing times as I'm between TV shows, but the following fractions put Orb (if he had the stamina)in an excellent position to win. He was about 12 lengths off the winer at the half and 3/4 mark giving him pedestrian fractions of 48.3, and 1:14.0. In this race, like every other race, he gradually moved up but those times are telling, because he struggled home in third. The days of 3yo dirt horses running more than 9f in a creditable time is gone. When they came up with the name "The Breeders Cup Stakes" to pick a name for the day they ran the best at each distance, I tend to see a bit of irony.

Buds I’m not trying to get into an argument here. The only reason I responded in the first place was because Dani commented to me in a contradictory way on another post yesterday and again this morning, otherwise I wouldn’t even have made a comment. As far as stamina, I’m sorry, but I don’t agree and believe me, I really wish I could. Palace Malice’s closing quarter of 27.58 does not suggest stamina, and especially not when he received at least 16 hard whips from about mid-way in the stretch to about 50 yards or so from the wire when Mike Smith put the whip away because no one could close even into that slow final quarter. These horses can run really fast fractions early as seen by a 1.10.95 for the first six furlongs. It was the last six furlongs that shows that endurance is lacking. They were run in 119.25.

I don't know about the times but watching the race, all three of the horses that hit the board seemed to me to be staggering down the stretch. Compare that to the Curlin, Rags to Riches Belmont where both horses were fighting down to the wire. I admit the track condition could have been a factor, some of those drying out tracks can be very tiring. Anyway I thought all of the top three horse ran good races, although I am not convinced this is a better than average crop, but you can never tell how good a crop is until they start facing older horses in the fall. I do think that racing more often with a stronger foundation will help them survive the year better than the lightly raced horses from last year.

Mike, the surface, and the pace i think can easily be said to be a factor. That kind of pace hasn't been seen since at least the beginning of the 2000's. As i noted the avg 6f is normally 1.12-13. This was 1.11 flat. Curlin and Rags had one of the slowest 6f splits, going in 1.15.32. By all means those two, being as good as they were and as competitive as they were, should have come home quicker. Laz, i wasn't tring to be an expert or give lessons, there is no reason to take offense. Icy, he was running faster than he has in most of his races, and was running longer than he ever has in any of his races. Closers who are forced to try and keep pace with a faster pace, going longer are most likely going to lose some of their kick because they aren't used to going that long or fast, then having to make up that much ground. Andy and Illhaveanother, i agree, i hope and believe that due to this point system we will see more horses run more often, getting better foundation.

Dani, I realize what your saying, and every year I consistantly toss the deep closers for that reason. The problem was in classifying Orb as a deep closer because in the Fountain of youth he was 5th at the 3/4 in 1:09.3. Yet in the Florida Derby which was drastically slower paced at the 3/4 or second call he was in 3rd position only one length off the pace in 1:13, and he won both. So before the race is run ( Belmont Stakes) how can anyone label this horse definitivly as a deep closer? BTW: just by eye I calculate he went about 1:14.0 so his pace at this point in the race to me says winner. It turned out he wasn't, and the reason wasn't his pace. Either he can't get the distance or was a tired horse, I don't know the answer to that. For myself figuring out Orb pre race was crucial to having a winning ticket and he showed thus far, except for the Preakness which I consider an aberration because of the track conditions, that at the 10f point he should have been and was in contention to win but flattened out. This race is a perfect example of why I never give a horse credit for distance not covered.

I do give the top 2 points for running good races. Oxbow being on the pace especially. I still don't know why the closers who were 10-15L back had zero run. The only horse moving out of the back was Orb and that may have been an illusion if looking at the internals he ran. The Derby was slow but it was attributed to the off track, the Preakness was slow by raw time comparions but Beyer said it was a nasty headwind that changed the track between the final races. Now the Belmont is slow because of the pace. What is next... the Haskell was slow because of the atrocious heat. So far this crops looks ordinary and the times ran less than ordinary.

David, from what i heard, though it was rated fast the track was actually not "fast." It got drenched the night before and had been drying all day making it loose and deep, making for a very laborous and tiring track. Couple that with the hot early pace and you some very tired horses the last part.

There is an interesting article on Paulick Report, actually from the ThoroEdge Equine Proformance blog showing the times of the Belmont from the 1939 until today grouped by decade. In the 1930's the average time was around 2:30 then each decade it became lower until the 1980's which had the lowest average time of 2:27 with no horse running over 2:30. Since then the times have gradually increased with this decade back up to the times of the 1930's. As the author pointed out the trend for slower times started about the same time as the universal use of Lasix. Makes sense to me, running 1 1/2 miles dehydrated doesn't sound like it would lead to fast times.

Yep, it wasn’t fast. Really? Fast Bullet won the True North in 1.08.1/5 (track record is 1.07 3/5). He received a 110 Beyer. Forty Tales won the Woody Stevens in 1.22 2/5, not the fastest, but fractions that tailed off after suicidal early fractions of 21 4/5 and 44 3/5; and yet a time that compared to BC Sprint champion Trinniberg’s 1.22 1/5 last year and was comparable to the last four editions of the race. Forty Tales got a 100 Beyer. The Belmont this year was indicative of a race where pace times collapsed. The first six furlongs were in 1.10.95. The last six furlongs were in 1.19.75. There was no balance in the running as evidenced by the fact that they literally staggered the final half of 54.23. When comparing it to the 2012 Belmont, the times were comparable, Union Rags in 2.30.42 to Palace Malice’s 2.30.70. The difference was in race splits, the 2012 Belmont going out in 1.14.72 (3.77 seconds slower than the 2013 race) and came home the last six furlongs in 1.15.42 (4.33 seconds faster). The track on Saturday was fast, maybe a little tiring as the distance factor kicked in, especially after a ridiculously fast first half, but it was still fast. The 98 Beyer reflects the quality of the race. An example of a fast track that really isn’t fast was the 2011 Whitney, won by Tizway. The race was won in 1.52.43 on a fast track at Saratoga. I can’t remember the exact Beyer but I do know that it was triple digit (I think 113). If the Belmont track really wasn’t a fast track, Palace Malice’s Beyer would have reflected it in a Beyer variant and have been somewhat higher.

Nice post Mike and it probably does say something about the continuous use of drugs as well as breeding for more faster horses that we are seeing now. The average Belmont time from 1990 to 1999 (including Thunder Gulch’s 2.32, but no others under 2.30) is 2.28.3 seconds. The average Belmont time from the year 2000 to 2009 (10 years), including Commendable’s 2.31.20 in 2000 (the only one above 2.30), is 2.28.63 seconds. The average Belmont time from 2010 to 2013 is 2.30.90, with not one under 2.30.

Stamina is decreasing in America. Everyone knows that, but it's gotten to the extreme where I'd start considering changing distances.. Let's not be in denial, anyone, the REAL classic distance in America is 9f.

Sullivan, Tizway probably did run that 117 Beyer in the Whitney (I think the 113 off the top of my head was low). I remember when he ran the race, the slow time and yet the high Beyer. It was all legit as other dirt races on that day were very slow as well as Turbulent Descent won the Test in 1.24.17 and allowance horses won the last race, also at 7F, in 1.26.67.

My feeling about shortening the distances (this really makes me burn) is that if they did, probably in another length of time they would shorten them even more. I remember the days when 5F, 6F and even 7F races on turf were relatively rare. Now look at the number of very short races we have on turf on a daily basis and at a lot of tracks.

In my opinion shortening the top races is exactly the wrong thing to do, they should be doing just the opposite. New York could start by making the Woodward 1 1/4 miles, why does Saratoga have two 1 1/8 mile Grade One races? And they could make the Jockey Club Gold Cup 1 1/2 miles so it fits the track and doesn't have to be started on the turn. Owners and Breeders need to be rewarded for producing horses with stamina and the way is to have major races with big purses at the Classic distances and a lot fewer sprints and 1 1/8 mile races.

Mary I missed your post as I didn't go off the post since my last post (not really confusing is it?) The Northern Dancer is a nice race won by an Irish Horse, Wigmore Hall the past two years. It is also a very useful prep for both the BC Turf and the Canadian International, especially enticing with its G1 Status.

On the subject of shortening race distances; say what you will about West Coast racing, but at least they've had the guts and (un-) common sense to keep their big races for older males--the Santa Anita Handicap, Hollywood Gold Cup and Pacific Classic--all at 10 furlongs while NYRA steadily caves on the other coast.

Congrats to Palace Malice for putting it all together in the Belmont. Reminds me of Union Rags last year (only similarity being they redeemed themselves after the Derby). Although I do think him skipping the Preakness gave him an edge of Oxbox and Orb.

I guess there was no chance of hitting the superfecta with your system. Since you tossed Freedom Child because he raced in the Peter Pan, Incognito could never have been chosen by you since he raced in the same race and could never be considered. How about coming up with some 10 cent super strategies and include the rest of the field in slot # 4 so that there's always a chance to hit that super?

I don't know if hitting a ~$450 trifecta is actually crushing a race. Plus, when you add in the seed money to make the $450, you're looking at even less of a crush. The flaw in your system is illustrated by the previous poster as you would have never hit the super, which would have been crushing the race.

I think the prices of the propsed tickets are very expensive. Now if they can narrow it down to 5 horses and just use those in the exacta's and trifecta's, I would consider that real handicapping! Did anyone purchase the system for $37 and did you play any of the winning tickets they came up with? If so, what was your net profit after playing the tickets?

Winning $1 Trifecta tickets they proposed in the book ranged from $32 to the highest at $120 as they show above. LIke to build my own tickets anyway so for me the value was more in the analysis than in the suggested wagering recommendations. Not sure I would have been as convicted about Palace Malice on top before reading the analysis.

There was 5 differance jockeys even the female leading rider couldn't do it, but once the B-L-I-N-K-E-R came off he saw who he was running against he BEAT them all. The real test is comming up in the Jim Dandy against the likes of NORMANDY

Yes, he only wore blinkers in the Derby, and it was a debacle. I don't know what will happen as the season progresses, but PM had been off for ~5 months with bucked shins prior to his 2013 debut. It took time and adjustments to help him find his strengths.

Congratulations, Palace Malice. He won the ultimate Test. I first recognized this horse late last year when I checked the 2 year old poll to see horses sired by Smarty Jones, Ghostzapper, Curlin (PM's sire), Afleet Alex, etc., as I have a feeling one of those sires could produce the 12th Triple Crown winner

Okay, okay. I know there are a lot of "Congrats, rafi!".. But, I think we should give this talented colt some much needed props. Perhaps my fault, there has been too much crap surrounding him and his ability. However, I think we should give him his props. He just won the Belmont Stakes, for crying out loud! He's sparkled since the beginning for me. He was my Derby colt (however, I did have my share on Orb) and I was disappointed with his finish. This race was kind of redemption for me. But, it was truly redemption for Palace Malice. He's never gotten a chance to really strut his stuff. He's had troubled trips, he's been immature, he's been unlucky, and he was forced to wear shaders in the KY Derby which caused him nothing but trouble. This was redemption for him. He's sparkled to me with his losses, but now I think he really is starting to sparkle the public with his win in the Belmont. So, instead of saying "Congrats, Rafi!" (still do, I love hearing I was right :P), I invite all to write: "Congrats Palace Malice"... He really proved y'all wrong today. He did it and he ran the race many knew he was capable of running.

This will go long way toward proving Curlin's value as a Sire. Up till today he had 2 un-graded stakes winners in fillies Countess Curlin and Stopshoppingdebbie and a few graded stakes placed fillies. A Belmont win proves he can produce black-type winners and when paired with right Dam can produce colts that mature fast enough to contend in the triple crown. Belmont also proves the stamina side of things, and I love that Palace Malace wasn't phased by the heavy racing he's gotten in last couple months. I think most of Curlin's "kids" are still going to do most of their winning later in 3yo season or in 4yo season since there are quite a few that took after their Sire and didn't race at 2. Anyway, I'm really happy for Curlin, I've been following all his kids since they started training and racing last year, and it's so wonderful to see a son of his win such a big race.

That's hard to say, Goblin. We still don't know. He just looked to me like the only one in the field that wanted to go that far (not really even him, he just liked it more than the others). I do think it would have been interesting to see how the TC would've played out if Pletch doesn't experiment with those blinks in the derby though. I used him in the derby and the belmont so I'm probably a little biased.

why irratated ? I have always liked PM - I just stated I had never found him mature enough to be in the derby and I was proven right. Maybe it was the blinkers, noise, immaturity, off track we dont know. He was goofy in the derby Even smith admitted as much, saying he was off the bit the entire race. We saw a completely different horse today.

His fractional velocity and the pace of race shows nothing of his sprinting capabilities. You can not pinpoint a E2 distribution (or in this case, the E1 and E2) c=and use that evidence to say so and so can run a shorter distance. Paynter's race on 5/19/12 (prepping for the Belmont) was a big example. His fractional velocity, in that race, was a very fast pace. He was able to maintain that pace. Does that mean he was a sprinter? Or for example, you could pinpoint Hard Spun, in the 2007 Kentucky Derby. If he runs a 1:10 and change, does that make it realistic he's a sprinter? His energy distribution was meh, and he could easily get the distance when he got to rate alone on the lead. Another example was Bodemeister. He had the ability to have a very very fast E1 distribution, does that mean he was a sprinter? Pace can only be evaluated by the ENTIRE race, not just one fraction. These are just observations and examples, not trying to cause an argument. On top of that, Palace Malice has all the signs of a long distance horse. He can easily get 10 furlongs, and he has the pedigree to go 12. He can run all day, and BESIDES ONE PACE LINE (real handicappers know, you must evaluate more than one pace line) he DOES NOT have the early distribution to be a sprinter. Perhaps at certain tracks he could attack pace at oddball distances, but definitely not 6 furlongs. Just my two cents.

Ghostzapper was a very good horse, arguably one of the best if not the best since Spectacular Bid IMO.

Maybe this will shut the Curlin naysayers up! Palace Malice has been slowly improving all spring! In the Derby the problem was the blinkers, anyone doubt that now?

Woohoo!!! $100 win on Palace Malice, $20 straight exacta with Oxbow. Man, I thought I was done when I saw those fractions, and I then I thought Orb would for sure overtake Oxbow. Got too greedy on the tri and super, and had Orb nowhere.

I liked Palace Malice all along, but I should mention that what others here had to say about him, gave me some added confidence to stay with him over Oxbow.

Yes, Buckpasser, I'm sure Cot Campbell is thrilled! He kept believing in his colt and making adjustments as needed.

today was a flop for me basically. i got the place in the Easy Goer, the win in the True North, NOTHING for the Just A Game, NOTHING for the Woody Stephens, the exacta in the Manhattan, & the place & show in the Belmont...

Congrats, rafi. I've always been high on him too, just not at the same level as you. Had the late P4 that paid $1450.25 and some P3s on the day. I kept getting beat in the gimmicks by a head, but I'm celebrating Palace Malice's win as well. Freedom Child was not a disappointment to me, he just easily answered the question he has distance limitations, as most Malibu Moon offspring do.

This was actually a very good set of TC races. Shug and the Phipps family won the only top race that has eluded them. Lukas, Calumet Farm and Gary Stevens got a nice classic win. And now Cott Campbell and Mike Smith and Rafi got a nice win. Very satisfying all the way around IMO.

Thanks and congrats, Sully. @Buckpasser. Agreed. My son was disappointed in Golden Soul's finish, though :). (he had some money on him :P).
