2013 Preakness: Post Position the cause of Orb's Demise
Orb may not be the immortal everyone thought him to be, but one loss at the hands of a bad post takes nothing away from him. He can still be great.

I completely agree that the one post did Orb no favors, but you lost me when you said this Preakness will prove most formful ... I still think Orb is the best 3yo, thereby making the Derby more formful.

oxbow wasn't a distance issue, to me just did he peak or not. finished the best of all the leaders in the derby. it's my lucky day i think has some limit but he did bounce back well. that's how i see it.

On Saturday, the track at Pimlico was slow and favoring front runners and played to Oxbow, especially when he was left alone on the lead. Orb struggled against the track and managed to finish fourth. For a horse to win the Triple Crown he has to be able to overcome everything the comes their way. Orb could not do that. I still gave Orb my #1 vote vote in the NTRA 3YO poll for this week.

"As for those who wanted to call out distance or class limitations on Itsmyluckyday and Oxbow ... What have they to say now?" I'll say this, they finished right where they were predicted to finish 6 to 8 lengths behind the next slowest Preakness Stakes winner in the last 50 years, Shackleford.

Unfortunately for me I sipping coffee when Gary Stevens Stated he knew he had it won as he only had to come home the last 5/16 in :30 seconds, which is 2-2/5 seconds faster than Oxbow ever did before. God bless anyone who had that exacta because it could only come by way of divine inspiration, not any other way, except a quick pick.

Speaking for myself there aren't any bad horses. Just some that are faster than others. Anything that may be taken as detrimental to any horse should be transferred up to the jockey, trainer, owner, never the horse. Some things are just hilarious though, really no offense to anyone. If It's any consolation to those who don't like my comments I was 0 for 6 races Saturday, but I had fun.

@icy, the interview I saw of Stevens he said "he needed to get home in 36 seconds." And he nailed it. Man, everyone on here knows I'm a Will Take Charge guy...but I'm pumped and giddy about Oxbow laying it down!

Dead on. The 1 post had everything to do with it. The reason why Orb won the Derby is Joel got him out of traffic and in the middle of the track. I kept waiting for that to happen here, but Joel just kept him on a dead rail. If he had gotten an outside draw, or Joel kept him on the outside, things would have been different.

Alright...I'm about to go all travel_vic here. The #1 post didn't have a damn thing to do with Orb losing yesterday. Heck, watch the replay. He coulda moved over 5 lanes less than 100 yards outta the gate. Look at win percentages from the #1. As good as any.

Jay, how can you say that when ever race he has won this year he has closed on the outside of his rivals? Being in traffic definitely affected him, as it does most horses. He never was able to make his run. I have watch the vid, i also watched the race in person. He had to back pedal when everyone was making their moves. By the time he did get moving the top three already had a sizable jump on him. He gave up valuable time and ground because of the position he was in.

Pace makes the race, Orb had no chance when Oxbow slowed things down and no one else challenged him. What happened to Gov Charlie and Goldencents. Theere should have been a 3 way battle for the lead roght at the get go. Stevens rode a brilliant race when no one else went after him on the lead. He put them all to sleep.

He has overcome pace before and i think could have again. Had he drawn the outside he probably would have stalked and pounced, like the Florida Derby. But he got into traffic, had to back pedal and wait when others had the jump and were extending their advantage. Great horses do overcome more often than not. We say they are supposed to overcome everything, but did Zenyatta, Man o War, Secretariat or the Bid? No. Not saying Orb is of their standing, he still has a long way to go. But so far he has overcome far more than he has fallen short of. He could become a great horse if he continues that trend.

dani, I'm saying he had every opportunity to get to the outside, but chose not to. And it wasn't because he was trapped, or boxed-in, on the rail for the entire trip.

Plus, if Orb was so "Great," he woulda rolled-on-up to Oxbow and his "slowest ever" pace, and left them all in his dust. Animal Kingdom in the BC mile had an excuse...Orb has NO legitimate excuse. BTW, NO ONE would love to see a Triple Crown winner more than me.

All 2013 three-yr-olds suck, the #1 position sucks, the Preakness winning time sucks, and Orb's reason for losing is "he was running WITH horses!?!" What BS.

Jay, Departing was at his flank pretty much the entire way. When he tried to go between horses he ran up on the leaders because he had nowhere to go, since there were 2 or three other horses to his outside. Where was he supposed to go? Bump departing and the others out of the way?

He could've positioned himself on the outside entering the clubhouse turn, but did not. If being on the far outside is the only way Orb can win...then Joel Rosario needs fired, cause he sure didn't put him there.

Jay, again i disagree. Joel went to move him up to gain position. When he did Departing was right at his flank. At first it was Will Take Charge. When Joel asked orb to accelerate he did, but Departing kept with him, not allowing him to move any farther out. You can't just run horses over.

I get that dani, but Orb had plenty of space to manuver throughout, IMO. Orb didn't like where he was at, and took himself out of the race. I don't remember Seattle Slew, Secretariat, or Affirmed doing that.

SS, as i said, Nobody knows if he would have gotten there. The track was speed favoring, Oxbow ran an incredible race, but the post and inability to move any farther out than the 3 or 4 path did not help him.

dani, I just re-watched it. Orb got a dream trip. Once again, if the argument is he can only win if he's allowed to be on the far outside, then he isn't anywhere close to being great. Alysheba clipped heels and almost fell down at the top of the stretch in the '87 derby, and still won. Good thing THAT didn't happen to Orb, considering racing with other horses at the same time did him in.

Jay, in that case i'll end it by saying we have very different definitions of dream trips, because that was far from one in my eyes. Also as i said, even greats could not overcome everything. Sometimes they had no excuses and they didn't fire, but because they overcame more than they didn't they were called great.

dani, I'll say that if Orb's trip to the 3/8th pole was offered to every Preakness trainer from now on, 90% would jump at the offer. I just think Orb, like my choice WTC, just didn't fire. I personally never thought Orb was going to win the Preakness. Most Derby winners do not. Orb winning in the slop wasn't all that impressive to me. But don't get me wrong...I was THRILLED for Orb an Shug. One lasts thing...if Orb was such a stand-out, Johnny V wouldn't have been on Verrazano.

Can't blame the post. Oxbow was just a better horse on Saturday. If you watch the gallop out, Oxbow left that field in the dust, if yesterday would have been the Belmont's distance, Oxbow would have won by double-digit lengths. If you look closely at his pedigree, he is a true stayer. He could run 2 miles if he had to. He's out of a Cee's Tizzy mare and that line will run all day long.

I have been an Orb fan and cashed in on the Derby but I agree there is no legitimate excuse... At worst he is just a good horse who was beaten by other good horses... At best, he could be a really good horse with a flaw... The need to be on the outside... I guess amid all the opinions time will tell...

THose of you who want to monday morning quarterback this thing...there is no way that ROsario could have brought Orb to the outside, then had enough horse at the end to catch Oxbow. Rail dirt was deep & sticky...that's a fact...and his running mates KEPT him on the rail. Joel had to choose between backing him off the pace, which 99% of horses don't ever recover from, swing him around, then beat the crap out of him to catch Oxbow & the rest...would NEVER happen. Stop trying to blame the horse. Circumstances took care of his trip, period.

The jockey isn't to blame at all for this race. It's know that Orb isn't use to being boxed in. Joel had him at the right spot but Orb seemed overwhelmed. I think he will win the Belmont Stakes b/c he's still a champion.

I had mylute who ran an incredible race, but to see Govenor Charlie, Goldencents, and Titletownfive absolutely not show up gives this game a bad rep....these horses can go 108 and change, I don't care how slow the track was ...it still makes me realize that with these types of trainers nothing is certain and just throw out any handicapping skills you might have. The race was a joke and next time they shouldn't show up. Next time they should just bring a present gift wrapped for D Wayne Lukas. What a joke.

These excuses are unbelievable. Maybe in the Belmont they need to rope-off the outside lanes for Orb and lay down dirt that he likes, and not let any other horse go out there. Maybe, they need to let Orb pick his post position first. Maybe, they need to let him have a head start. I can't believe what I'm reading. AND I LOVE ORB!

I now see Zenyatta as a Super, Super, Super Duper horse now. Why? She was able to slice to the outside against the best horses in the world...in about three seconds...in both Breeders Cup Classics. Knowing now how impossible it is to do that (since Orb couldn't), I'm starting to think Z may actually need to be worshiped.

And while I'm on my soapbox...the "Track" didn't beat Orb. Orb's (and WTC's) INABILITY to handle the track was partially why he lost. A little buzzsaw named Oxbow had a little something to do with it as well. Also, the jockey moving too early. Didn't Rosario do the same thing to AK in Florida this year?

amzing when joel rides and wins he is the best around.when he loses he is a bum.trust me and i say this with first hand experience.my pals horse ,vyjack.the 2 races joel was on his back where his 2 best.he ran relaxed and proffessional.his hands are incredible.no knock on the other jocks .but vyjack for them was a handful.joel almost put him to sleep.he got him to relax so good.also jay.to those trashing joel.i am sure they trashed him after the derby and the dubai races.after all it was probably the horse in those races.joel had nothing to do with it.

I'm remember thinking before the race that only two horses had won the Preakness since 1960 from the #1 post. If one is superstitious (and I'm not), one could think that Orb would be in trouble. Despite the post, I felt that if Rosario could get him outside by the second turn that he was going to win. He didn't, he looked bothered on the inside, and tired on top of it. Even if he had been able to get on the outside, I still think that he would not have run down Oxbow. The pace was too slow and Orb's big run in the Derby led to a bounce. And the post didn't help. Itsmylucky day ran better than I had anticipated.

Trainer D. Wayne Lukas said almost immediately after the Preakness that he hoped to try Oxbow in the 1 ½-mile Belmont Stakes.

I do not. Just look at how great he was acting as Gary Stevens was being interviewed by Charlsey Canty. Heck, I think Gary could've gone ahead and ridden him to NY. (I know...Safety First. Woulda needed to first add a headlight, tail light, and blinkers. Don't think he'd needed a brake light.)

And to clarify, not Horse Blinkers, but car/motorcycle blinkers. Dang, if you added horse blinkers to Oxbow, he would get speeding tickets leaving all the Toll Gates.

Maybe a couple of days early, jmac, but when there isn't a Triple Crown on the line, I like to see the Derby and Preakness winners run in the Belmont. Isn't that a "rubber match"?

Lucas seems to be on a roll, but he's not the one running the mile and a half. I don't think Oxbow's "on the lead" style will get r done in the Belmont. The big sandy seems to favor closers. As for Orb, maybe he thinks he deserves a vacation for winning the roses and maybe he does. If he runs poorly in the Belmont, we'll know. They pushed Animal Kingdom into the Belmont with no triple on the line and look what happened to him. Orb is a really good horse, rest him for another race down the road, skip the Belmont.

The preakness was a better distance for Oxbow then the KD, plus he had the one spot at churchill. But I will not be using him or any other horse for that matter, Orb included to finish in the top 3 spots at the Belmont. Horses that have raced in both are going to be at a huge dis advantage going into the Belmont. They have raced twice in the last month and it will show come belmont. Also Oxbow in my opinion cannot go 1-1/2. especially on the front end. So all that have raced in both the KD and Preakness are pitches for me. There will be some well rested ones that will do better in this race!

I'll just give you my top 5: 1 - Orb is the obvious number one since he won the Derby and he is just such a great horse, 2 - Oxbow because he won the Preakness in impressive fashion it was better than Orb's win but Orb has won more big time races, 3 – Revolutionary deserves the third spot because his races have impressed me the most besides the previous two horses and I love his closing kick. 4 – Unlimited Budget is the best filly in my opinion and will show that in the months to come, she looks like the one that could beat the boys. 5 – Mylute rounds out my top 5 because he’s so consistent and is ready to break out even more so by the end of the year. Horses to Watch: Let Em Shine, Winning Cause, Power Broker, Crop Report, and Zaikov.

I truly believe that the new point system was a detriment this year. Some of the colts competing have only shown one or two outstanding performances, not really competing to gain those high dollar amounts but simply hitting 20-30 points. I think that by the time the Haskell and Travers have been completed, we may then see who the real stars are. Even in the Sprinters division, no true names could even possibly be discerned. I thought the points was a good idea at first, but at this stage of the game, I do not. Before, the "Animal Kingdoms and the Game on Dudes" were there, center stage, this year not at all.

I'm with you sword. One prep they win, next prep they come in fourth and thats enough to run in the Derby. They are still maturing and nothing made sense as they ran in each. The Derby and The Preakness felt like preps as well. I guess a prep for the Haskell or Travers. I will wait until the Breeders Cup to see the real stars.

Yes, Jay, I saw that as well. But I think that the connections were inclined to sit it out of some of the races that they would have otherwise gone for. And then of course there is the whole other issue of the sprinters. At the very least, we had a few of them who competed and then went on to excel. Now none. I really believe the points system killed it.

It's Orb. Oxbow is a great horse but won the Preakness off of a lead that was basically handed to him. Orb's patented outside running style was impacted when he ran into trouble on the far turn. After that, he lost all momentum and steam but still put in a good run to finish fourth. He'll be dangerous in the Belmont again. He's the best colt of the crop; I'm not quite sure how the fillies stack up against the boys this year. In some aspects, like time, they look even better.

Orb. His whole body of work this year is better than any other 3 year old. Oxbow ran a great Preakness and LeComte but besides that not much. Orb beat Revolutionary and Verazzano on the big stage and Mylute is consistent but you gotta win to be the best. A really good crop of 3's but with his wins in the FoY, Florida Derby, and Kentucky Derby it's hard to vote against Orb. But we still have the Belmont, Haskell, and Travers to figure this all out plus the breeders cup! Good summer of racing ahead!

I know how they can fix the points system, get rid of all synthetic races except for the Breeders’ Futurity, Blue Grass, Spiral Stakes and the Lexington. I say that because these matter most and are the best races in my opinion. Also, get rid of the Royal Lodge, Grey Stakes, and Cash call Futurity, El Camino Real, UAE Derby, and the Smarty Jones. Maybe add 2 or 4 races in place of them especially as two year olds. Also, as two year olds the horses that want a spot in the Derby must race in the Champagne, Frontrunner, Breeders’ Futurity, Breeders Cup Juvenile, Delta Jackpot, Remsen, Kentucky Jockey Club but you have to pick one. Also, put 1 or 2 races in place of the Smarty Jones, El Camino Real, and the UAE Derby.

in my opinion there is no best 3yo.there is a group of about 5 to 7 at this point that separate themselves from the rest.when you say best going into the derby.you should be the dominant horse, almost noquestions about your superiority.exanple last year .ill have another.he dominated the first 2 races.although he won by small margins, the key word is he won.he could o been considered the best.this group.talented yes.but 1 better than the other.i am not convinced.zipse is right.makes for good chatter, but that is about it.where it counts,on the track.up in the air.

Orb is the best three year old, unfortunely these races are about the Trainers,. Lukas had three horses in the Preakness and controlled the Preakness. The number 7 horse came out of the gate and went straight for Orb on the rail..Now the Belmont will have Lukas and Pletcher with eleven horses in theBelmont,I love horse racing , but it has become outa hand.

Orb
with all due respect to orb and his cnnections.he won the derby,no excuses.he will be etched in history alongside many other great horses.but to those that still cannot accept his preakness loss , or are blaming rosario, or the inside trip. i reviewed and watched the replays of the derby and preakness.note in the derby he beat goldencents by 49 lengths.in the preak. he beat him by half a length. he beat oxbow by 10.in the preakness oxbow returned the favor by defeating him convincingly.he beat itsmyluckyday by 22 lengths.IMLD came back to beaat him in the preakness.folks this has nothing to do with blame or excuses.ORB didn't like the derby track,he loved it.the others just simply hated it.so before you try to canonize ORB as the dissapointing super horse.review the facts.he simply ran over a track he handled alot better than the rest.but to his credit and they can never take it away.HE WON THE DERBY.personally i wish he does run in the belmont.he will be a highly overbet horse who because of the number of race in 5 weeks and the facts sted above, will not hit the board.

You can't compare the Derby to the Preakness. Different horses, different track, different surface, different distance, different posts, different paces scenarios, etc. IMO, Orb lost that day due to many factors. A loss of momentum after trying to go through the hole for one and the very slow pace (no one was beating Oxbow that day after such slow fractions), but overall because on that day, he did not simply fire. After being on his game for five races, you would have to expect it to happen sometime. As for beating horses by so many in the Derby- he beat them so many not necessarily due to the mud, but the suicidal pace. All the horses you mentioned were forwardly placed

are you serious dressage or do you have a clue and trying to convince yourself.nobody is comparing the preakness to the derby.do you think it is a fluke that 3 horses ran so bad in the derby, yet all came back and basically beat the horse that dominated.i was at the derby,i walked the track with the horses from the barn to the paddock.my feet and everyone elses were sinking into the slop as we walked.i am not being negative on orb.all i am saying, when a track is that bad.it does not matter if you like the wet or not.this was a surface none of them ever handled before.like i said and read my lips.how do you explain the form reversal.feeds my point of previous posts.orb is as good as maybe 5 or 7 other colts.it is just who is best that day.but please enough with the excuses of slow fractions and taken ups.you say slow fractions.if you paid attention to the pimlico surface friday and saturday ,it was dead.the track might of played 2 seconds slower.so in reality it might of been a fast pace.face it orb was empty.as joel stated in his interview.yet no one listens.he even said, being stuck on the inside meant nothing.he had no horse.end of story.

I think it all came down to Tatical Speed. Orb doesnt have a great kick in the stretch. He won all of his races with Tactical Speed. You never saw him flying down the stretch to win any of his races. He reminds me of Creative Cause last year. CC had good Tac Speed but not the kick to overcome a big distance fast..

I jus watched the replay Rosario didn't have too much of a chance to get Orb off the rail. When he tried to move up with the top 4 on the backside Titletown Five accelerated on the inside to keep him bootled up as he had a wall of horse to his outside and nowhere to go. Titletown Five did his job for Lukas and helped Oxbows chances in my opinion.

Do I have a clue? Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea of what you wrote? YOU are comparing the Derby to the Preakness. It is not fluke. It was a slow pace. The slowest race in the last 50 years. I am not saying this to take away from Oxbow, only stating the facts so you need to calm yourself. The Derby there was slop- but even if it had been a dry track, neither Oxbow, IMLD (who I am a fan of so I am saying this with complete fairness), or Goldencents would have come any closer to Orb because the pace would have been just as hot. And why don't you learn to read? "overall because on that day, he did not simply fire" I am not making excuses for Orb, so I will say it again, calm yourself

dressage,1 other thing regarding your statement on the time.when orb won the florida derby,it was the slowest derby since the reconstruction of the track.final time is irrelevant to face value.it is the condition of the surface.oxbow going 47 on a dead track is faster than a horse doing .45 on an expressway speed track.that is all i am saying.not pointing a finger at you.it is all the excuses about orb losing.he is not that better than the rest.he is a very nice 3yo who won the derby.that should be reawrding enough for everyone.

Hard to fathom/understand stat: Orb dominated in the Derby, and ran a 2:02.89. In the Preakness, on a fast track, Orb runs a 1:58.84, and the winning time is 1:57.54. Winning times are separated by :05.35, despite the fact that the Preakness is 1/16 of a mile shorter, and the Preakness is run on a fast track vs. a sloppy track. Oh well, bring on the Belmont. Will it be a 2:40, or 2:30 winning time?

I'm saying Ord won the derby in the mud, the other horses wasn't taking to the mud, he lost the preakness because the other horses were better... my horse pic for the derby was N.I. and I look at the replay too, who was at the top of the streach.....the mud got the best of NORMANDY and Ord will not win the belmont....Steven really put his time into Oxbow, he rode that horse....

Almost called it! I still like Orb on top, then Revolutionary, Normandy Invasion, Oxbow, Itsmyluckyday, Verrazano, Goldencents, Vyjack. Java's War is a good inclusion so high, too; good distance pedigree. I'm giving him a long look if he enters the Belmont.

Mr. Lukas hasn't put a horse on the board in the Derby in 13 years. I think the game has passed him by and his handling of Oxbow and Will Take Charge is more proof, if how he handled Optimizer last year wasn't enough. I like Oxbow's pedigree and for some odd reason, even though his only 2 wins have come on the lead, his jockeys seem to be ok with trying to get him to run behind horses. He should be hustled to the lead at all costs in the AR Derby and whatever happens happens. He’s got the points so let’s see if he’s got a shot in the Derby. Maybe we’ll see a War Emblem in the IL Derby type performance. I think his only shot to finish on the board in the Derby is on the pace.

I'd include route winner Black Onyx. Otherwise, I like that you give your reasons for each one on your list, Brian. My top two are Verrazano and Revolutionary, at this point. Hoping War Academy makes the Derby, too. First four in last year's Derby were all 9f winners. Not a bad place to start looking for contenders.

Everyone seems to think that there will be so much speed that all these front runners need to sit off the pace. If i was traing a front runner and i thought everyone was afraid to take the lead, i tell my jock " go wire the field" get a horse like goldencents or vyjack a 3 length lead with a 1/4 left. Try n catch me!

Well whoever tries catch me if you can will have plenty of time to wave to the crowd as it's going to take him plenty of time reach the finish line. There are and will be no Bodemeisters in this years KD. He truly ran fast fractions but finished 3rd. Also about Black Onyx. I really am not liking him at all either. He won in the Spiral at slow fractions upfront. But go back and watch the race. After attaining the lead he was drifting side to side badly. And sign of a dead tired horse. No thanks!

Absolutely no respect for Black Onyx? Wondering why. He's run well over the conventional dirt, and appears a horse on the improve. My big question would have to be does this opinion change if he's working like a monster over Churchill ala Animal Kingdom leading up to the derby? I'd have to think it wouldn't be wise to exclude him if he is, after all, that's what locked me in on AK and made for a very profitable day.

I absolutely hate Palace Malice in the Blue Grass, but from a strategic standpoing, I absolutely understand the logic. If he gets the points to qualify for the derby, it will most likely take less out of him, and if he doesn't get the points, we will see him down the road in the Preakness and/or Belmont. As a fan though, would've much rather seen him in the Arkansas Derby.

The Bluegrass should weed out some of the field for the Derby. Looking for Oxbow, to run a huge race. What has surprised me this year, is the number of front runners. Most of the prospected Derby field, are front running horses. You better have a real good one to run wire to wire in the Derby.

Orb
Hey, y'all. I just need to point something out. When he was moving quickly on the inside at the 3/4th, he moved but quickly dropped back again. Did you notice when he moved to the outside part of the racetrack, he picked off colts? It's rare to see a horse break towards the rear, make a sudden move at the 3/4th's, drop back once again to second to last, and than make another move to reach 4th. Something tells me he doesn't like moving on the inside; not to mention the rail was DEAD all of Preakness day.. Just my two cents, I think he is BY FAR the best of this crop. Watch out for him to return with a vegenance in the Belmont and Midsummer classics.

Verrazano is a nonfactor.I wouldn't be suprised to see him retired early, much like his brother El Padrion, Gemologist etc. He is already showing signs of injury, and he can't handle the classic distances. Add Revolutionary into that list instead and I think you are correct.

you guys cannot be serious in thinking orb should run back in the belmont.what does he have to gain.if he runs it will be his 3rd race in 5 weeks.going back to the fla. derby.it will be 4 races in 2months.do you guys think he is a harness horse.listen to what joel rosario said after the race.i asked him at the 4 furlong pole and i got no response.then the host asked him that he got shuffled a little.rosario innocently shook his head and said, that had nothing to do with it.read between the lines.joel is telling you he was empty.do you want him to spell it out.some say he was close to the pace.they were walking up front.he was close to the pace in the fla. derby and won.face it.it is brutal to come back and win after just 2 weeks coming off a major effort.as far as the belmont goes, this is a mile and a half.these horses will be winded when they hit the top of the lane.i laugh,a lot of peoples wise guy horse is code west.are you kidding me.he lost to a horse who broke his maiden the time before on derby day.he ran on preakness day and beat a field of mules(no disrespect to mules) that is how bad the field was.now you think he can win the belmont running his 3rd race in 5 weeks.look at the horses that win the belmont.they are fresh.most passed up the preakness to regenerate their engines.if code west wins the belmont.i will bow down to all who are picking him and crown you a racing genius.

winwinwin is very very upset ! Like most of you I have a few bucks and was trying to win Thousands . For that reason I boxed all 9 horses in a .10 cent super for $ 302 . All I wanted was for Orb to be out of the money . So a 15/1 shot wins with two other non favorites 2nd and 3rd and Orb beats out Goldencents by a 1/2 length for 4th . OK, so I'm guessing what ? $ 3000 to $ 8000 . No, the $ 1.00 Super returns $ 1800 and the .10 cent super $ 180 . What happened ? 5 and 1/2 Million on Orb and he is out of the money and I get $ 180 ???Are you kidding me ?

When Jockeys say things like "it just wasn't Orb's day today", I have a real hard time with that. Have you ever seen Joel Rosario show guts on the inside? He's great on great horses when hes's on the outside but watch him when he's on the inside and needs to show some guts. How about the race before on Optimizer? same thing; he just was to chicken s *** to move through a smaller space.

Chris, nice article. Sorry we didn't cross paths on Saturday. For everyone who is in love with Rosario, this ride, but more importantly his lack of preparation, just proves he still has some learning to do to become an "elite" jockey. IF he had done his homework (i.e. just pay attention to the races throughout the day), he would have known that the RAIL WAS DEAD! Stevens obviously knew since he rode the 3-path the entire way around the track on a lone lead. That's why he is a HOF rider. Also, did anyone notice that Orb's best running came when Rosario finally took him to the middle of the track? BTW - Orb was never stuck along the rail. Look at the break, even Krigger immediate moved to the outisde, when many said, "Krigger will pinch Orb on the rail to make sure he doesn't get outisde."Krigger's ride was better than Rosario's, only problem, Krigger didn't have the horse.

I really don't understand the constant knocking of Rosario. He is an elite jockey, at the present time, regardless of the opinions of many who allegedly know much about racing have to say. In actuality those opinions are pure ignorance of the mechanic's of thoroughbred horse racing. I've gone into detail on his first concerning his alleged bad ride, where the classless Graham Motion knocked him publicly. It's truly amazing that a trainer of that many years doesn't know the difference between running style and pace. Curious they still decided to keep him for the race with biggest purse in racing when Johnny V unashamedly offered his services. Today we have a tout knocking him. Don't show me your past picks for accountability as they mean nothing when done without pressure, just as in horse racing with a horse running loose on the lead. You want credibility/accountability show your betting slips or your IRS statement that classifies you as a professional gambler. At the present time you're just another talking head trying to sell your picks.

Rosario is a top class jockey, no question, but he is human, and he clearly made a mistake in staying on the inside. With only 9 horses in the field, plenty of opportunities to get out from the rail. He had run the races that day and he knew the best spot was not the inside, yet he chose to stay on the rail. Only he knows why he defied everything we know about Orb's racing style. The role of the jockey is to place your horse in his comfort zone so he can run his race. The racing charts are available for all of Orb's races, and never has he won from the inside. He has always made his move from the outside, circling horses from 3-6 wide. Joel should have trusted his horse to be able to do that. Yes, the pace was slow, but nothing Orb hadn't overcome before. In the Fountain of Youth, he drew the rail, and Johnny V guided him away from the rail, making his move on the back stretch, and coming home circling horses.

Orb was his for the taking (Johnny V) but he chose Verrazano remember. Maybe you didn't watch the Kentucky Derby but Orb had a brutal trip. He ran at least 10 lengths farther than any other horse in that race. To expect him to come back in two and be in top form is unrealistic.

She looked really good, but Marathon Lady has to find the winner's circle eventually. She's had some tough losses.

@Zatt. I played a $.10 super, and I hit every horse EXCEPT my fourth horse was Emollient, who didn't come in (Boo-hoo, I lost $2.40)... But, I did hit Fiftyshadesofhay WP... Anyone notice how Pimlico (I was there, and will be tomorrow!) was playing towards stalkers? This is G-d's way of saying: BET ORB!!!! :P.

I'd like to know who in their right mind thought Fiftyshadesofhay would play the come from behind role with blinkers added? Especially when Baffert stated he added them because he wanted her to show more speed??? Joel just has the magic touch these days. Reminds me of Rodney Dickens. Really hope he stays out of trouble.

Sully--I, too, was confused about this horse adding blinkers, Rosario is a magic man right now.

Blinkers ONLY give the animal a field of view with less to distract them..This dogmatic belief that they someonehow are going to magically transfer them to becoming a front runner is crap.

the standardbred community has much more exotic equipment to do the same thing: one that is particularly interesting is a device akin to putting plastic straws perpendicular to the upper circumference of a large shadow roll so the animal has a blocked view at multiple slots ahead and keeps them going forward and not looking at the competition moving up along side of it....Innovative and effective

Preakness 2013 Recap – Oxbow steals show
Congratulations to Preakness 2013 hero Oxbow. Nobody wanted the early lead and Gary Stevens was more than happy to canter around the track and win this second jewel of the Triple Crown.

Did anyone notice that Orb's right hock wasn't right in post parade? ...aside from all these negative remarks on Rosario and Orb, I'm just glad we didn't have another 'Barbaro' mishap

So am I, I've become paranoid about it. I don't think there have been negative remarks about either, though... not sure where you got that

I didn't notice Orb's hock in the post parade, but I thought his stride/gait looked odd when he started losing ground before the front runners turned for home.

I didn't notice (thanks to a visiting sister who wouldn't stop blabbering and walking in front of the tv hah) but I did notice his stride did not look normal today. He did not look comfortable through most of the race. I do hope they find the reason why.

I only noticed him not being able to blow by all of the horses chasing brutal fractions like he did in the derby.

PP. I agree he didn't look right in the post parade. Always happy when there are no mishaps in any race.

because Oxbox, Goldencents, Govenor Charlie, and Titletown Five can't rate... toss em all... There is another reason, Orb, Will Take Charge, and Mylute.

Preakness 2013 Preview: Will Orb overcome inside post?
1. Orb (Malibu Moon) – Tabasco Cat is the only horse in the last 41 years to win the Preakness Stakes from post one and Orb likes to make wide, sweeping moves. If he is a legit Triple Crown threat the inside post will not bother him and Rosario continues to ride great. I have always liked Shug’s col...
