Horse of the Year! Congratulations to Ocean Park and his connections. Opie, 5-time Group 1 winner was crowned at New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s 2013 Horse of the Year Awards last night. He won 5 of his 8 starts- all G1 races – and $3,443,272 in prize money. His victories have come in the Cox Plate, Caulfield Stakes, Makfi Challenge Stakes, the Underwood and the New Zealand Stakes. Opie was retired after sustaining a tendon injury in the Dubai Duty Free. A son of Thorn Park, out of Sayyida (Broodmare of the Year), stands his first season at stud this year.
Cox Plate winner Ocean Park "Opie" has been retired due to a tendon injury he picked up whilst running in Dubai Duty Free. So disappointed to see the end of his brillant career --As a successful son of Thorn Park, no doubt he will be popular at stud. He exits with 15 starts 8 wins, 4 places $2,529,000 (AUS). http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/superracing/new-zealand-star-ocean-park-is-retired-after-failing-to-overcome-tendon-injury-setback/story-fn67sphz-1226614269161
"Opie" has landed in Dubai, still aiming for the Dubai Duty Free. The Cox Plate winner (over All Too hard and Pierro) deserves a measure of respect. While AUS/NZ shippers are feared in the sprint divisions, it has been a while since a winner has come from downunder in the Duty Free Mile (last was Elvstroem in 2005). ATH and Pierro, as well as Green Moon and Happy Trails (later two well-beaten in the Cox) all won G1s in their first Autumn starts. Opie won the G1 NZ Stakes in his last on Mar. 9th, though it took him a race to round into his 2013 form. After Dubai, it's on to Queen Anne Stakes (1600m) on the opening day of the Royal Ascot carnival in June where a rematch with All To Hard is anticipated. Opie is to remain Europe for other races (and to boost his international stud appeal) which most likely include the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown in September. I for one will be watching this talented son of Thorn Park with keen interest and anticipation!
Just got turned over in a Group 1 in Otaki. Looked very poor finishing 4th out of 5 didn't travel at all didn't find anything down the straight either. I wonder if they will still take him to ascot or dubai?
ZATT's Star of the Week, is ... Ocean Park!

Holds off recent G1 Caufield Guineas winner, All Too Hard, by a neck in a dramatic finish to win this year's G1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. Caufield Guineas 2nd, Pierro, finished 3-3/4 lengths further back in 3rd.

  • yukichan · Actually, OCEAN Park scored his fourth Group 1 win from as many starts and completed the Underwood Stakes-Caulfield Stakes-Cox Plate treble, emulating the feat of Ajax (1938), Bonecrusher (1986), Almaarad (1989), Northerly (2001) and So You Think (2010). · 1337 days ago
  • yukichan · Yes, Opie is likely to back up in the Mackinnon Stakes according to his connections... · 1337 days ago
