What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

It's that time of year again. Turf writers, handicappers and bloggers get an extra early start on predicting who will be in the final field of 20 on that first Saturday in May. Is it premature? No doubt. Is the field set in any way? Not on your life. But ...Read More
A quiet week at Down and Derby Central with no changes among my Top 20. Things will change next week with considerable action, highlighted by the first major prep in California, the Robert B. Lewis Stakes. Expected entrants include American Lion, Tiz Chrome, Hawaiian Springs, Dave In Dixie, and Cara...Read More
Chasing Dreams Racing 2008 LLC’s 3-year-old colt Noble’s Promise and Peter J. Callahan’s 3-year-old filly Beautician are now in residence at Gulfstream Park in trainer Ken McPeek’s barn after arriving Tuesday on the Tex Sutton charter flight from Los Angeles that brought California-trained runners ...Read More
Champion Lookin At Lucky and the only horse to beat him, Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Vale of York (Ire), shared the highweight assignment of 126 pounds on the 2009 Experimental Free Handicap, a hypothetical ranking of last year’s two-year-olds as if being handicapped for a 1 1/16-m...Read More
In my last Derby post, I stated that a new player (Take Control) had arrived on the scene. Unfortunately, the Baffert trainee has shin problems and needs a few months to recover, so he’s off the Derby trail. Barn also has Conveyance, who had to work for his San Rafael (G3) tally on Jan 16th. He will...Read More
Two potent armies are gathering en masse on opposite ends of the country. Their objective: Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. The generals: Bob Baffert, who is assembling a large force on the slopes of the San Gabriels, and Todd Pletcher, who is matching him horse for horse, with his main...Read More

The end of the year has arrived, and this is my final derby Top 10 of 2009. All Derby hopefuls turn three on January 1st, and as we inch closer to the first Saturday in May, a new player (Take Control) has arrived on the scene. Read More

  • thedodge · Take Control is to green to make the Kentucky Derby his next start is going to be an allowance race. He needs the seasoning and will lack the graded stakes money also to make the derby a horse needs a good mind and talent. He is talented no doubt about it maybe second half of the year that's my guess. · 29 days ago
  • thedodge · As for Baffert be absolutely loaded, I don't thing so from the two i liked one Clutch Player died the other Tiz Chrome he's bred to route acts like an old pro has run fast 97 beyer yes only 6 1/2f. My worry with him he has short legs maybe he's the next Northern Dancer will have to wait. For the other's Tiny Woods Sprinter no doubt, Conveyance Dr. Steven Romans says Indian Charlie his sire and Holy Bull his dame sire are intermediate Speed (non chef-de race). And in conclusion Looking At Lucky has'nt run that fast so i'am not buying. · 29 days ago

South Florida has been a winter haven for Kentucky Derby hopefuls for decades. This is not some nostalgic bent. Three of the last four Derby winners, and four of the last seven, have made Florida their winter home, so it's little wonder that racing fans are already asking about which Florida 3-year-...Read More

After watching the race I have to say that I am very disappointed in how Noble's Promise turned out during the race. I don't understand why Kenny McPeek chose to put Rafael Bejarano on the horse when the horse was responding so well under the guidance of Willie Martinez. I read on DRF.com and ESPN.com how McPeek thought that Robby Albarado (who was originally chosen to replace Martinez) could ride the horse better, but have to question this when it was he who costed Noble's Promise a better turn out in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile after deciding to skip on his last workout? Now he chose to replace the rider? I'm sorry Mr. McPeek but don't blame the rider for your wrong decision making? It's obvious from Noble's career standings, that the horse was a great contender and challenger for Lookin at Lucky and etc. under the help of Martinez. I was expecting a better performance this evening between these two great horses but can't help but question the connections.....so disappointed but yet very happy for Lookin at Lucky for his great talent! We want Willie Martinez back on the saddle!!!!

  • droe · bband, I have to agree with you and cigar both. but being in the business and being allowed to get a better insight on the trainers reaction after the race and his praise to Willie on how well he rode given the facts then bashing him a week before the Cashcall saying that another rider could do it better.....sorry but that's kinda lacking self-accountability on his end. That's all I'm saying. And yes, Willie has ridden better.....with a better product. And if Nobel's Promise would have had his proper workout he might have been that product that day. But thats not to take away from Lookin at Lucky, again like I said before...Lookin at Lucky is Great Talent! · 51 days ago
  • cigar · I generally believe riders are overrated in their overall ability to move a horse up a notch or two. · 50 days ago
Lookin at Lucky won the $750,000 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park on Saturday, his third Grade 1 win of 2009 and arguably his finest. Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Lookin at Lucky raced on the inside, just behind pacesetter The Program on the first turn and backstretch. Read More
Lookin at Lucky reaffirmed his status as the top 2-year-old this year with a sound victory in Saturday's CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park. The Bob Baffter trainee is now the likely Eclipse winner and the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby.Read More
Saturday’s (Day 26) pick six from Hollywood Park includes the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity. It looks like a match race between Lookin at Lucky and Noble’s Promise. The former would’ve captured the BC Juvenile with a better trip, and he figures to get back on the winning track today. My sugges...Read More
This weekend’s stakes schedule is as light as last but certainly more consequential to next year’s Derby trail. • cigar · McPeek and co. thought they had the race won at Santa Anita... I was never visually impressed with the overall performance, however, and I want Lookin at Lucky out of there and that's it. Maybe a Look / everyone but Noble's promise zacta is in order? · 53 days ago
  • Medlocke · Lookin at Lucky is, if you'll pardon the pun, a very good looking 2yr.old with, IMO, a world of promise in racing. He's ran really effectively on the synthetic track's and made an awesome accounting of himself, even in defeat, in the Breeders Cup Juvenile. I don't think many would argue the talent is there, but can this talent adapt to the conventional dirt. That's likely the only unanswered question for this 2yr.old, and likely the only question that would prevent him from being a favorite for the 2010 Kentucky Derby as well as the other two Triple Crown races. · 52 days ago
My first Kentucky Derby top ten post appeared here on Nov. 15th. A few prep races have been run since, so here is my updated list. Two horses have dropped from the original list, including Homeboykris. The Rick Dutrow trainee was a disappointing 5th in the Remsen on Nov 28th. Thiskyhasnolimit, 6th i...Read More

The presence of the most accomplished United States-based colts thus far and a strong contingent from Europe should spell value for those who wager on the Nov. 7 Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park.Read More
  • Rossington · Being undefeated and winning easily over the synthetics, Looking At Lucky is certainly the horse to beat in the B.C. Juvenile. D'Funnybone is a horse with a lot of natural speed and could certainly be the one to press him. But D'Funnybone has been primarily a conventional dirt runner, which, if he stay's healthy may serve him well in May at Churchill Downs, but it's unclear how he will rate over the pro-ride surface at Santa Anita. The distance of the race may also be a concern for D'Funnybone as well. · 100 days ago
