What the Nation is saying about Nextdoorneighbor...

In the past seven graded Triple Crown preps contested at Oaklawn, five have contained at least one starter based on the California synthetic tracks. Of those five Oaklawn invasions, the West Coasters own four wins and a second-place finish. Keep that in mind as you analyze Saturday's Rebel and recal...Read More
Saturday’s pick six from Santa Anita Park includes four graded races. The feature event is the Grade 1 Big Cap, and it could turn into a match race between classy turfer Loup Breton and talented distaffer St Trinians. There is a 60% chance of showers with a high temperature of 62. Read More
When a 5-year-old mare named St Trinians heads postward in Saturday's running of the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap (G1), she'll attempt to become the first female winner in the race's 73-year history. But beating the boys is old hat for this plucky English runner, and trainer Mike Mitchell expects h...Read More
  • cigar · Her winning would be pretty cool given the female domination of the sport over the past year. That is... IF they run the race tomorrow. · 148 days ago
Ten new names are in the lineup of 23 separately listed wagering interests in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens Friday at noon Eastern at racetracks and wagering outlets throughout North America. New horses for Pool 2 include Caracortado and Nextdoorneighbor, the first two Derby...Read More
  • mid0827 · Does someone want to explain to me how Drosselmeyer and Stay Put get left off of this wager? And why not put on a popular horse like Lentenor? The wager is all about fun and the excitement of getting horses early. People see horses that have hype or run well and they want to bet them. Adding Radiohead, Connemara and Odysseus off their wins makes sense. Not sure what the point is to add Setsuko and Nextdoorneighbor. I think the guys that pick the runners were embarrassed when Caracortado won last time and they don't want it to happen again, but what happens when Kettle River wins the Sham? · 148 days ago
  • cigar · Ugh... nothing makes sense with any of those decisions. If they were smart, it'd be open to every single horse nominated for the race... a true future book! · 148 days ago
Saturday might be a good time to kick off a two-prep campaign for the Derby. Last year Mine That Bird made his first start of the year Feb. 28, while the year previous Big Brown kicked things off March 5. Street Sense opened his two-prep slate in 2007 on March 17. Average them together and what do y...Read More
Although it was postponed by one week, the Grade 3, $150,000 Sham Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita had the field largely remain intact. Such promising young runners as Nextdoorneighbor, Kettle River, and Setsuko head a field of 10 3-year-olds trying to emerge as late-developing threats for the Grad...Read More
Marcello was added to Saturday's re-drawn Sham Stakes, but with forecasts of rain, will this Derby prep ever run?Read More
There are so many top 3-year-olds who still have questions to answer it makes it tough to come up with a list of 12 horses each week that you’re perfectly happy with.   There are always going to be horses you’d love to include who just haven’t done quite enough to warrant supplanting the more a...Read More
There are owners who go out and spend millions of dollars looking for a Kentucky Derby horse, and trainers who stockpile prospects in the hope that one of them gets there. Mike Machowsky does not have that luxury. He trains 15 horses. Not 15 3-year-olds. Fifteen horses. Yet of those 15, two - Caraco...Read More
Saturday’s pick six from Santa Anita Park includes the Grade 3 Sham Stakes for 3yo’s traveling nine furlongs on the Pro-Ride surface. There is a 90% chance of rain with a high temperature of 62. Probably off the turf tomorrow, and hopefully they’ll be able to salvage the card. Read More
The Grade III Sham Stakes brings together a mixture of local horses looking to break out of maiden and allowance company in a big way. Only one of the 10 entries has graded stakes experience. In his most recent race on Feb. 3, The Program, who was fourth in the Grade I CashCall Futurity in December,...Read More
All of a sudden the Derby Trail just got a whole lot downer and derbier with several important preps being run yesterday. The theme of the day was Mr. Todd Pletcher, who scored with three Derby prep wins, topped by a scintilating score by Eskendereya. All of yesterday's preps...Read More
  • wickedstyle · Enjoyed the read - I was somewhat surprised to see you put Eskendereya at #2, not that I disagree after the FOY, but it still surprised me. No Vale of York? Just a Cali fluke? And also no love for Discreetly Mine? · 160 days ago
  • cigar · Eskendereya's Fountain of Youth is by the far the best performance any 3-year-old has put on the track this year. He should be #1. · 158 days ago
There are no stars, or even familiar names, among the nine probable starters for the $150,000 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita next Saturday. That could change as the Triple Crown trail progresses over the next 60 days. One thing is for sure: The first-place purse of $90,000 and the distinction of winning...Read More
It is appearing with each race that Rule  does not believe in doing unto others as he would have them do unto him. In fact, he treats others rather shabbily. He either crushes them with a mighty blow, as he did in the Jean Lafitte last year, or he pretends to be vulnerable and then dashes any ho...Read More
Trainer Mike Machowsky is excited about having two of his horses on the Derby trail. He trains Caracortado and Nextdoorneighbor. Caracortado runs next in the San Felipe Stakes against Lookin at Lucky, and Nextdoorneighbor runs at the end of the month in the Sham Stakes. That's a pretty good hand for...Read More
Well, we have our Top 23 Future Wager horses. Of course, old reliable “all others” is the morning line favorite, which every year provides bettors with the worst odds imaginable. But what if you matched the Top 23 with and second-tier group and see which group proves more successful and sends the mo...Read More
A few years back when interviewing Tony Dutrow, he told me he was in the racing business to make money and that every horse was for sale. Now that he has WINSLOW HOMER on the Derby trail for julep-yearning owner Rick Porter, it will be interesting to see how his philosophy changes now with a sip of ...Read More
This week was highlighted by the first Derby Dozen, and although there are several top-class colts listed, many people are still looking for that one horse, or horses, with the “Wow” factor.   As usual, there are many promising colts who are still lightly raced, having just broken their maidens...Read More
Two potent armies are gathering en masse on opposite ends of the country. Their objective: Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. The generals: Bob Baffert, who is assembling a large force on the slopes of the San Gabriels, and Todd Pletcher, who is matching him horse for horse, with his main...Read More
Nextdoorneighbor won a maiden race for 3-year-olds in Sunday's first race, leading owner John Amerman and trainer Mike Machowsky to consider a trip to Oaklawn Park for the Lido Palace colt's next start.
