Older Comments about New Year's Day ...

Will stand for $12,500 in 2014 at Hill N Dale. For a thrice-raced juvenile with a single G1 win, retired due to unsoundness, I fail to see any appeal beyond a nice pedigree.
Thank you to all who help make Horse Racing Nation my favorite racing site ... Here's to another wonderful year on HRN. Happy New Year!!!

  • Jay S. · Very nice SS. Wow, Rachel is 8. Time certainly marches on. Hope you guys didn't blow-up the Gulf Coast last night. Did the Ruler present any new Decrees this this morning for 2014? I need to make sure I stay in compliance. :) · 607 days ago
  • Buckpasser · If monkey didn't, Elmo had a few. Most regarding food service here so you should be ok. · 607 days ago
Why was this colt retired? As for as I know it was reported that he has suffered a non-displaced chip. Isn't that only a minor injury. He could come back to racing late next year. So what on earth will this colt be doing in the breeding shed? He has raced only 3 times. Yes, he did won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile but what does this prove? He could do so much more. We have mostly harness racing in our country and it probably makes a difference but our horses are racing as 12 years olds (geldings of course) and they compete in 12 races per year, which means that they race from two to three times in one month. I know that it's hard to even compare harness racing to thoroughbred horse racing but I think if Thoroughbreds would be managed like this it would be better for this sport.
very disappointed to announce that New Year's Day has been retired due to an injury in his left hind sesamoid. when more updates come i'll let you know. this was announced by Baffert & confirmed by DRF.

  • sportofkings01 · the road to the KY Derby is definitely a hard one...setbacks, injuries, etc are always part of the journey. Hope the other top prospects stay sound, injury free. · 612 days ago
  • Sullivan · It sounded like they chose to do this and very well could've put him through rehab for a come back. I am wondering if they don't think he can improve his stud fees in the coming year · 612 days ago
Sorry for the DERBY lost, but he wasn't my pick to win
on December 15, New Year's Day worked 3F at Santa Anita on Fast Dirt in :37.80 h finishing 7/16.

  • goblin · LOL, striped mentality, Equibase is great for checking all sorts of facts. You can pull up each individual race chart for any given horse, check on recent works (as above), look at breeding through the 5X files, etc. It's a nice tool when you have a question. · 624 days ago
  • kaitlinefree1 · i get my workout reports from Horse Races Now, but it is powered by Equibase. · 624 days ago
Shared Belief was very impressive yesterday, but New Years Day is my favorite west coast colt so far. I like that his pedigree is similar to Street Sense. I know it is probably silly to fall in love over a certain pedigree cross, but it didn't dissappoint me the last time.
  • TimSmith · I agree he has the pedigree for sure.. I like him too Shared belief was flying too.. Love the preps! · 624 days ago
  • TimSmith · Try putting..Strong mandate-Havana and NYD into each others trip.. NYD did have a nice trip and closed into 109.. But hes young can and will get better · 624 days ago
This horse should be in the 1 spot
Havana is in the lead for 2 year old esclipse award but with only 2 races under his belt im sure we can expect this one to run in the cashcall futurity as his final race of the year. So honors are still up for grabs.
He is such a good looking, solid little horse. I look forward to seeing his progress leading to the Derby.
well winning the juvenile auto kicks him out of my derby bets and future wagers srry but the trend is there

  • sosotricksy · I noticed. Not getting my hopes up to high yet, but wouldn't complain if they had similar careers. · 667 days ago
  • kaitlinefree1 · New Year's Day looked great, & Baffert said distance shouldn't be a problem. they're pretty high on that horse. · 667 days ago
Skims the rail, overcomes the speed bias and he should be a top contender for the Derby.
Looked very good today.
After finishing a strong 3rd on the 17th, he's back to try and break his maiden on Saturday.
Nice debut and ran on late to get 3rd.
Looks nice.
