Finally caught the Real Sports segment on drug use in horse racing, including interviews w/ Asmussen and Blasi as well as vet for Penn national and Aqueduct rep. "We must be doing more than what we're doing" as quoted by Aqueduct rep (whose name and job I did not catch) ... rings so true yet is so frustrating when I see nothing being done or at least being shared with public and fans like me.

  • yukichan · Thank you Dr. Bell. Dr. Scollay's frustration, disappointment, embarrasment and even sadness on what little action has taken place since the task force investigation and recommendations was so evident. · 730 days ago
  • drvivianbell · You're welcome, yukichan. I totally agree with your take on Dr. Scollay's participation; she is in a difficult position indeed. · 730 days ago
When you record someone who utters the f word 3 or 4 times in every sentence, never has anything good to say about anyone, and wants to look tough to a dumb-looking, innocent-talking chick, they will invariably come across as mean and uncaring -- even though they may just be low class and ignorant. They probably talk the same way about their own kids, but that doesn't mean they don't love them or at least care about them somewhat. These are people that work in barns! How do you expect them to talk and behave? Despite what was coming out of their mouths, I didn't see any blatant mistreatment of any animal in the video. People exaggerate, that's how they make their stories more interesting. But if it's true that Nehro's foot was as bad as they claim, then only a fool would believe that the owners knew nothing about it. I don't see any undercover video on the Zayats, but that doesn't mean they weren't complicit -- even if all they said was "I don't want to hear about it, just do whatever you have to do." People fail to realize these horses are not pets. Owners don't pay millions of dollars to watch them look cute lying on the couch. For everyone else involved, their livelihood depends on these horses racing and winning races. For some it's big business, but for most it's making enough to pay the rent and put food on the table. If the rules allow them to put jalapeño peppers in the horses' butts, they'll do that. So tighten the rules, but don't crucify people for the way they talk or the tales they tell (of which there's no evidence one way or the other). You can't eliminate meds altogether. That would be cruel to horses who need it. But their use could be better regulated to try to ensure they are not masking an unsound horse.
Seeing what Nehro went through in this video brought years to my eyes. This really is god awful what is going on that as a young and relatively new fan to the sport had no idea was going on. Extremely disappointed in Gary Stevens and his blatant comment about using a shocker. This is why my favorite trainer is Matz. I can almost guarantee that none of this goes on in his barn. It really is a shame the ethics and morals some people just don't have. Cannot wait to have some retired race horses I spoil once we get our farm http://youtu.be/9TJVA2lwW4A

  • LAZMANNICK · Ruffianlover I also believe that you are fairly new to the sport. When people first take an interest they look at the positive things and they think, my, peaches and cream, what a truly innocent and wonderful sport. Then they witness their first catastrophic breakdown and the luster begins to wear off. Then they see trainers that act like they are family people and really care about the animals that they are associated with, perhaps being interviewed on TV or in magazines. Then they are introduced to the other side, the business side that is far removed from calling it a sport, the part that is masked by an ugliness that is sometimes too much to understand and even more difficult to accept. I’ve been around this sport for a long time and I’ll be honest, I sometimes wonder why I support it. If it wasn’t for the past I probably wouildn’t. · 797 days ago
  • indiancharlierules · If you don't think Zayat is equally to blame you are a moron. What was the name of the sprinter that he moved to Lukas from Baffert just so he could run it on Derby Day. Baffert wouldn't run it so Lukas said what the hell I will, think he finished last. These owners know exactly whats going on with their horses. · 797 days ago
absolutely disgusting what happened to Nehro in Asmussen's stupid barn. someone should have said something to the Zayats. they adored this horse. if i was Ahmed & his family i would be PISSED. as they are i'm sure.

  • cleclair1994 · assmussen did NOTHING. nothing in those taped incriminate him. Oh, and the video makes it look like the colic was caused by his feet? YEAH OK. PETA is ridiculous · 797 days ago
So .. Because I am so tired of the 'Horses these days are so much worse than the use to be" mentality - If you had to create a 10 horse field of horses you would consider to be the best OVER THE PAST 15 YEARS who would you choose? .. (I'd also rather not recieve a bazillion post entry on why they use to be better, I've heard it all before - I don't need to hear it again. )
