icyhotboo · I did like the rider change and he looked great before the race. I used him as my saver but screwed it up as I played exactas with him on top because I felt I needed more than 7/2 with him but I didn't have ST, I was a bit concerned betting Fort Larned as he had never gone that far before and even 1/16 mile makes a difference. He never passed ST so maybe it just wasn't his day not the distance. IDK I didn't realize until after looking that those two finished the same way last year. I love Rosie but Rosario is so much stronger and last race before this she let him drift way wide taking RTG with her.It was a fun day, looking forward to the BC now. Brian do you happen to know what the pick four would have paid if your ticket hit with the #1, or #5? Just curious. · 237 days ago ·

Three, 10 furlong match races, with each race spaced 10 days apart. Who wins the series? Nashua or Citation?

LAZMANNICK · Citation and Nashua. Every time I hear their names I feel something magical. Citation is for sure all that people say he is. Because of injury, his 16 race win streak culminated with that 16th win fully 13 months after the 15th. He was in the money in every one of his first 40 races and only missed the top three once (his 41st start) in his career. He ran at 14 different distances from 4 1/2F to two miles and won at 13 of them (finishing second by a nose in the other one to Noor, the 14F San Juan Capistrano when carrying 130 lbs. to Noor’s 117). When three he defeated older horses 8 times including twice in February. Citation didn’t always run fast, which supports my belief that class is more important in racing than the ability to run super fast races, and yet when he did have to go fast he won the Golden Gate Mile in 1.33 3/5 (was in front at the 7F marker in 1.07 3/5), and this at a time when races under 1.34 was a rarity. In the space of two months he won 7 stakes including the TC with the Jersey Derby sandwiched between the Preakness and the Belmont, and this, along with the heavy workout load he was subject to, shows that he could take the heavy load required in this mythical three race challenge. Nashua had an exceptional career also. He ran at 12 different distances ranging from 4 1/2F to two miles and won at every distance accept 7F. His three year old year was exceptional. He was voted HOY and three year old champ, winning 10 of 12 races and finishing second to Swaps in the Belmont (later revenged in their famous match race) and second to High Gun (that year’s handicap Eclipse winner) in the Sysonby Mile. His three year old season culminated with a 5 length win in the two mile JCGC (his first of two wins in this race). He wasn’t necessarily fast, often winning because of class also, but he did equal the 6F track record at Belmont, set a track record when winning the Preakness and also when winning the JCGC. He could also take a heavy work load, twice having run three races in a calendar month. Who would win the three 10F race challenge 10 days apart? My answer would be Citation, but not by much. During his career he ran 10F seven times winning 5 and finishing second twice. In the majority of those races he set the pace and ran controlling type races with the ability to get the first 6F in 1.10 and change while running mostly with a commanding lead though in one he ran head-to-head and pulled away in the final furlong. This ability to control the pace in a match race is extremely important and though Nashua had a similar 10F career and had the ability to control the pace in 10F races (especially the match race with Swaps) in several of his 10F races he weakened when challenged whereas Citation never lost a 10F race (or any race except that 14F San Juan Capistrano) when leading, another strong indication of superior class. This would be a good series of races for sure and if it did happen and Nashua did lose, it would be no shame in losing to arguably a top three horse all time in N/A. · 281 days ago ·

footlick · Nice Laz, just one thing to add. Swaps was basically running on three legs in the match race with Nashua. It was not a fair race in that respect. Shoemaker said many times that Swaps was the best horse he ever rode, and certainly the fastest. · 281 days ago ·

LAZMANNICK · In a correction to my above post I stated that Swaps beat Nashua in the Belmont. Of course it was the Kentucky Derby. In answer to Footlick, I know that Swaps ran in that Match Race with a leg injury and for some that will forever taint Nashua’s victory. One thing is for sure, both had sensational careers at three with Swaps winning all 8 races he contested until that Match race on Aug. 31. He would not race again until February of 1956 when winning a handicap race at Santa Anita. How good was Swaps? He set or equaled six different track records on both dirt and turf. He won six races carrying 130 lbs. He won his final race at two, won his first six starts at three before losing the match race, and then at four he won seven of eight races (finishing second in the Californian by a head to Porterhouse, a defeat he revenge in the Hollywood Gold Cup when carrying 130 lbs. and beating Porterhouse by more than three lengths). But for that Match Race defeat and that head loss in the Californian he would have won 17 consecutive races. When asking who was the best, Nashua or Swaps, it is interesting to note that in spite of Swaps heroics at three, Nashua won the awards for best three year old and HOY. And yet, Swaps beat Mister Gus at least four times that I know of while Mister Gus beat Nashua by more than two lengths at equal weights in the 1956 Woodward. · 281 days ago ·

LAZMANNICK · AmbitiousD. Swaps got him back the following year when he was voted HOY with I believe Nashua finishing second in the voting. My personal feeling is that they were both equal in abilities. I do think that if Swaps hadn’t been injured and have his three year old season end prematurely and would have raced and continued to win through the balance of 1955 he might have been HOY based on the basis of his pulling away from Nashua in the Kentucky Derby. Another big win for Nashua that year was his decisive 5 length win in the JCGC, then one of the most important races when it came to deciding championships. · 281 days ago ·

Nashua-1955 Horse of the Year and probably best known for his win in the Great Match Race against Swaps, the horse who had beaten him in the Kentucky Derby. I have just completed his past performance history and with a record of 30-22-4-1, Nashua was a truly amazing thoroughbred.
