What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

HA: Over the last couple of years, you have had the pleasure of training some very high quality horses. Did any of those horses just seem to pop out when they first came to you? What traits did they seem to possess that made them stand above the rest? EH: Colonel John, Well Armed, and Dubai Escapade...Read More
Since he beat maidens as a 2-year-old in the final week of 2008, Papa Clem has given owner Bo Hirsch and trainer Gary Stute ample reasons to be ambitious. The colt has won more than $1 million, most of which came with a victory in the Arkansas Derby last April, and placed in four other stakes. When ...Read More
Saturday's $150,000 San Fernando S. (G2) is one of three graded events at Santa Anita on Saturday, along with the San Rafael S. (G3) and San Ynez S. (G2), and Grade 2 winner PAPA CLEM (Smart Strike) is the one to beat in the 1 1/16-mile event for four-year-olds. The Gary Stute-trained colt hasn't vi...Read More
Warning: what you are about to read should be taken with extreme skepticism. Not to sound self deprecating, but yours truly is on one nasty losing streak in the Triple Crown, and the selection for the Belmont Stakes will be made as a means of self defense...Read More
So, we’re expected to believe that the strong Belmont Stakes day program will be run in the seam of the weather zone. At this point, I’d probably be willing to lay 7-5 on a fast track at 6:27 p.m. Saturday, but not one point higher.Today and Saturday, we’ll sketch out the 10 Belmont Stakes entrants ...Read More
Ok, I am officially smitten with Mine That Bird. I admit to being one of those misguided souls who paid no attention to him before the Kentucky Derby other than to comment what a beautiful mover he was. After the Preakness and seeing him on the Belmont track Thursday morning, I have to say in simple...Read More
The two key figures in the pace scenario for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes are Miner's Escape and Charitable Man. The former will be a longshot in the field of 10, while Charitable Man was made the 3-1 second choice behind Mine That Bird. So, let’s see how this may play out...Read More
  • mshutty · Excellent analysis of the Belmont Stakes likely pace scenario by Steve Haskin. I think he has the two early leaders nailed down. There is no doubt in my mind that the Zito barn is sending Miner's Escape. I believe Steve's estimate of where Dunkirk will be sitting early is interesting. He has decent trackable cruising speed, so if the pace is slow he'll find himself closer to the leaders than is being projected but without compromising his late punch. Agree, however that I would prefer he sits about 5 lengths off early closing that gap to two lengths behind about mid final turn. · 285 days ago
The two main elements in predicting the ‘09 Belmont Stakes outcome are pedigree and pace handicapping.Pace makes the race, and Charitable Man looms the one to catch. He is 3-3 on conventional dirt and 2-2 at Belmont. He pulled off a wire job in 6.5f career bow and is capable of rating should another...Read More
Mr. Hot Stuff worked a bullet five furlongs over Polytrack on Tuesday at Keeneland Race Course in preparation for a likely start in the Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 6 at Belmont Park. The Tiznow colt completed the move in 1:01, the fastest of 12 at the distance. It was his third workout at Keeneland ...Read More
There will be no Triple Crown winner in 2009, but there is a possibility of a showdown in the June 6 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) between the winners of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and Blackberry Preakness Stakes (gr. I).Read More
Most remarkable about WinStar's late surge is it keeps up one of the more notable streaks in racing. This year marks the fourth consecutive season WinStar will have at least two starters in the Derby, having sent out Colonel John and Court Vision in 2008, Any Given Saturday and Cowtown Cat in 2007, a...Read More
Over at Keeneland, Friesan Fire drilled five panels in 1:00-3/5. Now that Old Fashioned has been retired, the Louisiana Derby winner is the lone bullet for Larry Jones.Read More
A lack of pace changed the game plan for odds-on choice Pioneerof the Nile, but jockey Garrett Gomez improvised, enabling the son of Empire Maker to hold off Chocolate Candy for a one-length win in the $750,000 Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) on a picture perfect day in Arcadia.Read More
