  • Age of Reason · Yours truly has been saying for months that 8 furlongs is too short for this horse. He runs like a 10-furlong horse, and I'll never understand why they haven't stretched him out yet, nor if they ever will. Shirreffs' patience is alternately revered and ridiculed (depending upon the results of the moment), but he is being too conservative with this one, IMO. Best American turf horse! He hung a little last time but shit happens. Looking forward to seeing him beasting in Hollywood Park, absolutely my fave!
How good is this guy? I think he is pretty amazing and could put together a championship campaign in 2012
  • Age of Reason · Agreed! Though it's always been my personal hypothesis he's more of a 10-furlong horse. And in both his graded stakes wins this year, he's need a 6-furlong split in 1:09 and change to run them down; when the pace was slower in the Arcadia (G1T), Willyconker turned the tables on him. Is it just me, or did the Kilroe Mile only confirm (based also on his running style) that Mr. Commons is like Gio Ponti, a good turf miler but more of a 9-10 furlong horse?

  • Age of Reason · @Larooski: If you had actually read what I wrote in context and entirety, you would have known that I was merely comparing the two horses' (perceived) similarities concerning preference for a certain distance. I could also say that Secretariat and Drosselmeyer both liked the 12-furlong distance of the Belmont, but no one (else) would be delusional enough to say that I'd compared Drosselmeyer in the same league as Secretariat! And anyway, I do think Mr. Commons is in the same class as Gio Ponti; Mr. Commons finished directly behind Gio Ponti last year in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T). A lightly-raced 3 year old running in his first Grade 1 race in eight months (and first on turf) ran with a seasoned Grade 1 veteran competing in his third consecutive Breeders Cup.
