He has been retired and will stand at Lane's End.
good name for a horse but a very confused concept. I have found one of the most succinct and factual presentations of this basic premise right her by the trackman at little old Los Alamitos where I cut my teeth before D. John Shirreffs said Thursday that Mervyn LeRoy Handicap winner Morning Line would miss the Hollywood Gold Cup and instead would be pointed to the San Diego Handicap July 28 at Del Mar.

That was really strange, he wouldn't go anywhere near the gate, didn't think they would ever get him in, then ran a graet race
  • CraigBradshaw · had beaucoup pre-gate issues, holds up the post time, but once out of the gate, takes over the race and wins. feisty horse. · 1457 days ago
Grade 1 winner Morning Line returns off a layoff (first start since the Whitney (G1) last fall), under new trainer John Shirreffs in the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap (G2) at 8.5 furlongs this Saturday at Hollywood, versus reigning North American champion Acclamation.
Really liked this horse's win in the Carter last year and his 3yo season before that, but it's like he dropped off the edge of the earth! The most recent piece of info I could find on him (from this or any other site) is that he is now in John Shirreff's barn, but that was over 4 months ago...News, anyone?
has been moved to the barn of John Shirreffs.
Mystery solved....bone chips in both knees. Surgery today to remove them. Not retiring, pointing towards a return to racing after his recovery.
Would love to have seen him run in the Met Mile. I think he had a very good chance of winning it. According to his trainer, Nick Zito, they are instead pointing for the Whitney. Would be nice to see him run and get a race in before then, because the Whitney is about three months away.
This horse has run three huge races in a row, and he won an Allowance by 11 or so lengths, and came back better in the Penn Derby. After that big effort he still ran another big effort in the Dirt Mile, coming up just a nose short. He ran a big race in the Mile, he got a little rest from racing, so I think he's coming into this race as good as before. I think that Rule should come back pretty good to. He's coming off a long layoff but he has a bit of a history off running pretty good off a layoff, plus he likes the track. I would put Morning Line, Rule, and Soaring Empire in my top three, and the payout should pay decent money.

  • bigbrown2332 · That could be the outcome, he certainly looks like he's getting better, What I really like about him is that he doesnt regress at all after big races. I didn't know he was going to run that well, I thought he might be back out of the money because of the big effort in the Penn Derby, but he showed he was a really good horse. · 1942 days ago
