LAZMANNICK · Tampa. The 1957 three year old crop was reputed to be one of the best all time in North America. Of that group Round Table and Bold Ruler are included in the top 20 of the Bloodhrose top 100 of the last century. Round Table was great on dirt, but even better on turf and set or equaled 14 track records and one world’s record. Bold Ruler finished 4th in the Derby as the 6 to 5 favorite, then rebounded and won the Preakness and after a sensational career became one of the premier sires all time. There were others too like Iron Liege, the Derby winner; Gallant Man, who seemed a sure winner of the Derby but lost when his jockey Willie Shoemaker misjudged the finish line. He won the Belmont and was actually an English bred. Gen. Duke who was one of the Derby favorites but had to scratch from the race (his stable mate Iron Liege won it anyway). Gen. Duke that year won the Flamingo and equaled the world record for 9F of 1.46 4/5. Another was Promised Land who would become the dam sire of Spectacular bid and the grand sire of Sunday Silence, both eventual HOY winners. Mister Jive was a nice horse but was overshadowed somewhat, but was a great horse in Canada setting or equaling several track records. His best win in the US was the Gotham when he defeated Promised Land and Clem (later to become a top handicap horse) and that was enough for his owners to enter him in the Derby. Some of the awards that crop won were Bold Ruler (three year old champ and HOY in 1957); and Round Table (leading turf horse in 1957-58-59, top handicap horse in 1958-59 and HOY in 1958). · 314 days ago ·

LAZMANNICK · Buckpasser if only they were in the breeding shed today. The one thing about Bold Ruler is that most don't realize is that he sired more than 10, 10F stakes winners and yet many don't consider him a sire of true distance horses. · 314 days ago ·

buckpasser · Laz. I think that had a lot to do with the Phipps family. They had so many top two yr old by Bold Ruler like: wueen of the stage, successor, vitriolic, reviewer, king emperor, etc. etc. that won 2 yr old honors and many lesser ones who did well too, but many of them did not great three yr old form. Some of course came back better in the handicap ranks, but a lot didn't. This is surprising as most of the broodmare · 314 days ago ·
