What the Nation is saying about Miner's Reserve...

The injury to Miner’s Reserve , who set the pace in Saturday’s 1 Travers before tiring to finish seventh, is worse than originally thought, Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito said Monday, and the 3-year-old will miss several months of training as he recuperates from a hairline fracture in his right knee...Read More
Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito came within a nostril of winning his second Travers in 23 tries with Fly Down, but instead had to settle for his fifth runner-up finish.   Zito had run second previously with Louis Quatorze (1996), Albert the Great (2000), The Cliff’s Edge (2004) and Bellamy Road...Read More
In a contentious field of 11 three-year-olds encompassing everything from the Kentucky Derby hero to a maiden winner making only his second start, A Little Warm was made the lukewarm favorite for Saturday’s 141st running of the Grade 1, $1 million Travers at Saratoga Race Course.Read More

  • cugel the clever · My prediction was bang on. Fly Down and Afleet Express passed the early leaders in mid-stretch and dueled to the wire with Afleet prevailing by half a nose. First Dude a distant third. Ice Box and Super Saver confirmed again that they were one-race wonders. · 637 days ago ·

Jimmy Jerkens, winning trainer of Afleet Express (No. 7): “He broke with the field and they went on pretty well ahead of him. He was tucked in pretty good behind him, and he was able to get through at a crucial time. I thought around the turn he was going to give himself a little breather, but he go...Read More
Galloping out after the oh-so-close finish of the Grade 1, $1 million Travers at Saratoga Race Course, jockeys Javier Castellano, aboard Afleet Express, and Jose Lezcano, riding Fly Down, looked questioningly at each other.Read More
When last seen in a 1¼-mile race, Super Saver was busy splashing through the mud to become the nation’s top three-year-old. Much has changed, however, since the first Saturday in May, when the Maria’s Mon colt registered a 2½-length victory in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1). He the...Read More
Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito is going to take his time making a final determination whether to run all three of his entrants in Saturday’s 141st running of the Grade 1, $1 million Travers at Saratoga Race Course.   Front-running Miner’s Reserve, runner-up to A Little Warm in the Grade 2 Jim ...Read More
Kim Dutrow, wife and assistant to Tony Dutrow, trainer of A Little Warm (No. 5): “We’re thrilled with the post. We talked about it before the draw, and we wanted to be right about there. If trainer Nick Zito decides to run Ice Box in the $1 million Travers Stakes on Aug. 28, the Kentucky Derby runner-up will have a new jockey on his back. They ran the Jim Dandy at Saratoga, and then the Haskell at Monmouth Park was scheduled for the next day. But as you Americans put it: Ho hum. Something called A Little Warm won the Jim Dandy, and the world remained on its axis. A Little Warm is not exactly an unknown, but the only household where h...Read More
  • humphrey · Too much is made of WHERE a horse runs rather than just HOW the horse runs. The idiots of the newspapers, who are baseball EXPERTS on Monday, Track and Field EXPERTS on Wednesday etc. are the ones writing this tripe. THE HORSE RUNS and that is it. It is akin to saying that if Alex Rodriguez were batting in Pocatello Idaho he would be something less than the Alex Rodriguez who bats in Yankee Stadium. SAME PLAYER, just a different venue. Horses run to THEIR ability and form cycle NOTHING else counts · 663 days ago ·

  • ThaSpa · The venue doesn't matter if the conditions are the same. It does matter if the conditions are different. A-Rod hitting bombs in NY would be different from Idaho if the fence was closer or he used an aluminum bat in Idaho. The surface a horse runs on makes a difference. Running on poly is different from running on dirt, especially for a closer. Unfortunately for Zenyatta and her fans, the fact she essentially never leaves the poly will always hang over her head. I'm not saying that's fair but it is what it is. There is very little respect in the racing community for that surface. Because of that now, her connections have put all the pressure in the world on her in the Classic this year. If Rachel or Quality run & lose, it won't affect the perception of their lifetime records. If Zenyatta runs & loses her legacy will be tarnished for alot of people. She could've just had an off day & would've lost on any surface, but unfortunately that is the position she has been put in. · 662 days ago ·
