Horse racing's second season hits a high point Aug. 29 with the running of the $1-million Shadwell Travers Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga, and this Saturday at Saratoga seven 3-year-olds will assemble for the 46th running of the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II).Read More

Organized horse racing in West Virginia dates back at least 223 years, but no horse who has won the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) has ever competed in the Mountaineer State before. That status is going to change on Aug. 1, when Mine That Bird goes to the post in the $750,000 West Virginia Derby (gr. II) at...Read More

The two key figures in the pace scenario for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes are Miner's Escape and Charitable Man. The former will be a longshot in the field of 10, while Charitable Man was made the 3-1 second choice behind Mine That Bird. So, let’s see how this may play out...Read More
  • mshutty · Excellent analysis of the Belmont Stakes likely pace scenario by Steve Haskin. I think he has the two early leaders nailed down. There is no doubt in my mind that the Zito barn is sending Miner's Escape. I believe Steve's estimate of where Dunkirk will be sitting early is interesting. He has decent trackable cruising speed, so if the pace is slow he'll find himself closer to the leaders than is being projected but without compromising his late punch. Agree, however that I would prefer he sits about 5 lengths off early closing that gap to two lengths behind about mid final turn. · 1781 days ago ·

In fact, Robert LaPenta has two chances to join Chenery--Miner’s Escape and Brave Victory. Longshots? Maybe, but don’t try convincing LaPenta he doesn’t have a chance, not while last year’s 38-1 stunning Belmont Stakes victory with Da' Tara is fresh on his mind. “I have to tell you, that day will be...Read More
Never again will I utter or write a bad word about Mine That Bird. He is a lot of things, and a one-race wonder is not among them. Nevertheless, the key to winning Saturday is to throw Mine That Bird out in the Belmont, a race that is, for him, a terrible fit. It's going to be a two-horse race betwe...Read More
The two main elements in predicting the ‘09 Belmont Stakes outcome are pedigree and pace handicapping.Pace makes the race, and Charitable Man looms the one to catch. He is 3-3 on conventional dirt and 2-2 at Belmont. He pulled off a wire job in 6.5f career bow and is capable of rating should another...Read More
