  • medlocke · No matter what's said or done, they're both great filly/mare's. They've both had incredible year's. But IMO, and only IMO, the only reason they're both being considered for HOY is both of their abilities to beat the colt's. When you look at that, the quality of competition factor has to come into play. Granted, Rachel had a couple of more win's on the year than Zenyatta. But take a look at the World Thoroughbred Rankings and see how many colt's in the top 20 or 25 that Zenyatta beat, then take a look at how many in that group that Rachel beat. It's not even close. Zenyatta beat the much tougher male opposition. As far as female opposition, they both beat good fillies, but fillies out of both of their leagues. But, even in that category, as it turn's out, Zenyatta beat the Ladies Classic Champion multiple times in 09' as well. No offense at all intended to Rachel Alexandra supporters, because I too think she's a remarkable filly. But for 09', if I had a vote, based on what I just laid out my vote for HOY would go for Zenyatta hand's down. JMO. · 30 days ago

The graded stakes committee fights a double-edged sword when they release their updates each year. Blame, who won the Clark Handicap one week ago, is now a grade two winner. ZENYATTA (Street Cry [Ire]) climaxed one of the most brilliant careers in racing history with a thrilling victory in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), becoming the first female to win the coveted race and extending her unbeaten streak to 14. The effort to overcome her m...Read More
  • Rossington · John Shirreffs must really be on cloud nine after the weekend he just had in the Breeders Cup. Zenyatta's run really needs no explanation, it speak's for itself. Life is Sweet, however, ran like a filly with a world of talent and look's like a filly that may even have better races ahead of her should she decide to stay in training for next year. Garrett Gomez really rode a masterful race on Life is Sweet. I kind of felt going into the Ladies Classic when she was sent off with morning line odds of 8-1 that she may be the one in the race that was being overlooked. Much like I felt Gio Ponti was in the Classic. Great job by Shirreffs and congrats to the connection's of Life is Sweet and Zenyatta. Great performances from both fillies. · 91 days ago
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Moss' Zenyatta, undefeated in 13 career starts, was installed as the 5-2 favorite when she takes on males for the first time in the Nov. 7 Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I). She is attempting to be the first female to the win the World Championship's marquee event.Read More
  • Rossington · I do think that Zenyatta will play a big role in the Classic on Saturday. As a matter of fact, I think if it's a fast pace, and it's likely to be with Regal Ransom and Quality Road out front, it could even set up for her to have a big chance to win. But as of right now, I'm not sure she should be the morning line favorite. I think Rip Van Winkle, against colts, has accomplished as much as any in the field and should be the favorite. I am, however, quite surprised that Gio Ponti's and Einstein's morning line odds went off the same as Colonel John's, Richard's Kid, and Mine That Bird's. Gio Ponti and Einstein are both far better horses and are much more proven against quality field's than the other 3. Gio Ponti and Einstein both at 12-1 along with Quality Road, all three pretty good bet's to hit the board in the Classic. · 97 days ago
  • Lmaris · I agree. I see at least 2 horses (Summer Bird and Rip Van Winkle) I'd but ahead of her, and possibly Gio Ponti and Richard's Kid too. Rip Van Winkle and Summer Bird have proven themselves against far better than Einstein and Gio Ponti who have shown themselves to be somewhat vulnerable in comparison. Wish Macho Uno had made the trip. Even with Mine That Bird, Zenyatta is going to find she's not alone in the rear and horses may be moving along side her rather than her blowing by them. First time all year she's going to face a real quality field. We'll what she's made of. · 96 days ago
Coolmore and trainer Aidan O'Brien took a chance by entering only Rip Van Winkle in the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), despite the colt's history of foot problems, and now they could wind up without a horse in the race if Rip's most recent setback proves serious enough to force his withdrawal.Read More
  • gardenesque1 · Rip Van Winkle has run through foot problems all year, but in a wide open BC Classic, I want nothing to do with a horse less than 100%. · 96 days ago

For the fans of Zenyatta, the possibility of a hot pace bodes well for the closing mare in Saturday’s $5 million Classic. With one confirmed speed horse and three possible pressers, the long run to the first turn and the excitement of the crowd, the pace could easily heat-up to a level where anywher...Read More

  • cigar · Colonel John would need a career best race and it might not be good enough, but an on-the-board finish at a big price? Maybe. As for Zenyatta, a friend of mine posted this on Facebook: Bob Baffert on Zenyatta taking on the boys in the Classic: "It's a big question mark but it’s going to be answered. It’s a championsip race and that’s what it’s all about. If she’s a true champion she’ll do. It if she’s a filly and mare champion she won’t." · 97 days ago
  • Rossington · My guess is with Regal Ransom and Quality Road on the front end it will be very quick fractions. This could set up the race perfectly for a late closer like Zenyatta or Gio Ponti. · 96 days ago
In looking at the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), several thoughts and angles emerged that could have a bearing on the race. While they may turn out to be mere folly, they are at least worth mentioning just to make sure all bases are covered and there is less of a chance of Monday morning quarterback...Read More
  • Rossington · It's almost game time. After studying it, analyzing it, and playing over and over again in my mind's eye, this is how I see the Classic turning out: Rip Van Winkle turn's out to be as good as Aiden O'Brien advertised and win's the Classic. Provided she goes, Zenyatta closes late but fall's just short of catching RVW and get's second. An also late closing Gio Ponti comes right on Zenyatta's heels and narrowly get's by a tiring Quality Road, who's ran a big race himself, to claim third. That's it, that's how I see the Classic unfolding. So do I need to go see a shrink or what? · 97 days ago

The connections of the unbeaten Zenyatta, who raced to her 13th straight victory in the Lady's Secret Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting, said Monday they would wait as long as possible before determining which Breeders' Cup race she will run in. • Rossington · IMO. if Zenyatta is ever going to take a crack at the boys, this is the time to do it. No horse in racing that I can think of love the synthetics and Santa Anita for that matter than Zenyatta. It's set up perfect for her. If she were to beat this field, or even hit the board, would do much for her credibility for those who consistently argue that her undefeated record is due to her being raced so conservative. With her closing kick, and her loving this track, I think it's a win,win for her to run in the Breeders Cup Classic. So Jerry and Ann Moss, I love this horse but now's the time to step up and let her shine. · 116 days ago
  • Medlocke · I think it's a must. Given the surface and the track, she'll never again have this many factors in her favor to run against the males. If, by chance she were to win the Classic, it'll give her instant credibility where others have doubted her in the past. · 116 days ago
My guess is that Zenyatta's owners will skip Filly Friday at the Breeders' Cup, do the right thing and run her on the Saturday against the boys in the Breeders' Cup Classic. It's the right thing because a potential Horse of the Year title is worth more than an undefeated record at retirement.Read More
  • Rossington · I couldn't agree more with this article. Turns out he hit it right on the button with Sea the Stars, he's now retired. As for Zenyatta, I agree, HOY honors is worth more than being undefeated. If she wins the Classic then comes the question: Which is worth more, 3 wins against the boys or a win in the Classic? A win in the Classic would have to make even the most avid Rachael fan pause and re-think. Rachael is 8-0 this year, Zenyatta is 13-0 forever. Will Rachael Alexandra's mistake of not turning up for the Breeder's Cup Classic come back to haunt her? Time will tell. · 118 days ago
There is so much to discuss after the weekend's stakes extravaganza, but one race that likely had the most profound effect on the Breeders' Cup was the Goodwood Stakes (gr. I).Read More
  • Rossington · I say now or never for Zenyatta. If she had been entered in the Goodwood Stakes, Gitano Hernando or not, she could have won that race. There really wasn't much there to beat, imo. MTB who hasn't won a race since the Ky. Derby, Colonel John who runs well on the surface but is a bit overmatched in the Classic, Informed and Parading, whom neither have ran to par for some time now. So with Sea the Stars now retired, I say let Zenyatta run against the boys. Quality Road or Summer Bird are neither proven on the surface. Of the American entries, only Einstein may give her trouble. So let her run, so what if she finished 3rd to Rip Van Winkle and Midshipman. No shame in that. · 118 days ago

Wynn Las Vegas released their Future Book odds for the 2009 Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita. Leading the way in the Classic is the undefeated filly Zenyatta (10-1) and Einstein (10-1) as co-favorites. Read More
  • arazi · I think the future books are interesting as they are wide open this year. There are no standouts in the older division, and with polytrack, the Europeans are a factor more than ever. Some interesting plays to consider are: - Colonel John at 18-1 off his tremendous turf return at Del Mar - Rail Trip at 25-1 off a dominating run in the Hollywood Gold Cup - Macho Again at 30-1 based on his ability to run big in major events I'm not sure about 12-1 on a European that may or may not come, but would love to see super horse Sea the Stars come for Breeders' Cup. The Wynn put together a deep future book that should be great to get bettors started. I actually wish the Breeders' Cup still did those future wagers... they were a lot of fun. · 176 days ago

  • TerriZ · Quality Road has handled the 4 month layoff well. Similar comments were made about Big Brown last year in his run for the Triple Crown. As both horses have similar hoof problems, long layoffs are a necessity. QR, according to his former trainer, always did what he asked him to do and he only had to tell him once. After all the injuries of wonderful 3 year olds this year, QR is the only one left who is capable of defeating Rachael Alexandra. He certainly did that with Dunkirk who left the Florida Derby a defeated horse. It should be an interesting Travers and I hope that all the horses are well after that race. · 184 days ago
  • mshutty · Quality Road still needs to be tested in my opinion. Granted, not much left in the three year old division to provide that test. The Amsterdam was impressive for sure, however, the jump to 10 furlongs will be interesting. As for his best race, the Florida Derby, let's keep in mind that he was lone speed in a short field on a track that was very biased to early speed that day. He'll find very different conditions come Travers Day. · 183 days ago
