Godolphin's Vale of York is set to return to competition on March 4 in the $250,000 Al Bastakiya, the middle jewel of the United Arab Emirates Triple Crown and one of six lucrative stakes at Meydan.Read More
  • Medlocke · I'd be the first to admit that Vale of York looked impressive in his win in the Breeders Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita back in November. But other than that run that he made over the synthetic main track at Santa Anita, all of his other racing has been done on turf at race tracks primarily in Great Britain. If Godolphin is looking to make a potential Kentucky Derby contender out of Vale of York, you'd think they would be looking to race him in some of the conventional dirt track Derby Prep races, just to see how he's going to respond to the surface. Midshipman looked like the colt of old that won the Breeders Cup Juvenile in 2008 Friday night, 2-25-10, at Meydan Racecourse over in Dubai drawing off to easily beat his stablemate Asset in the Meydan Metropolis. He certainly didn't look like the colt that he did in 09' struggling in allowance races early in the racing season. But he did manage to put together a respectable 3rd in the 09' Breeders Cup Dirt Mile finishing just ahead of a great colt in Mastercraftsman. But over in Dubai on Friday night, he really did look like that very promising 2 yr.old of 2008, stalking the pace from about fourth position to really turn it on in the stretch and draw away easily from a very good colt himself in Asset.
LAST year's World Cup runner-up Gloria De Campeao (Pascal Bary/Tiago Pereira) left his mark on his return to Dubai on Thursday with a gutsy victory in Round 1 of the Maktoum Challenge, Group 3 highlight of the opening night at futuristic Meydan. Read More

A few days prior to the Breeders' Cup, I started to write something about how horses with prep races run on dirt had failed so abysmally over Pro-Ride at Santa Anita the year before. I was going to list all of the 2009 dirt-to-Pro-Ride horses, label them throwouts and advise the public that they wou...Read More
After striking out with all his Kitten-named horses for two days, owner Ken Ramsey's former claimer Furthest Land proved to be the big dog in the $1 million Dirt Mile on Saturday at Santa Anita.Read More
Mastercraftsman is one of the European bankers of the meeting and should have too much class for Pyro. Furthest Land could represent some value in the place market.Read More
The complexion of the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile changed dramatically since pre-entries were announced Oct. 28, with six horses that originally made it into the body of the race opting for other races or electing not to come. The most significant offshoot of those defections is that Midshipma...Read More

The presence of classy Europeans Mastercraftsman and Sweet Hearth to the pre-entry field for the $1-million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I) on Nov. 7 gives the runners from the powerful Godolphin stable the prospect of some tough competition.Read More

  • Rossington · Both of O'Brien's horses, Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman are for real. I've watched a lot of replays of races that they've either won or gave Sea The Stars all he wanted. Personally, although O'Brien doesn't seem to think so, I feel that Mastercraftsman is a bit more talented even then Rip Van Winkle. I plan to bet Mastercraftsman whether he's in the Dirt Mile or the Classic. I do, however, feel that Rip Van Winkle will be right there with the front runner's come Classic's end. If she sticks with the Classic, it would for me be difficult not to bet Zenyatta to at least hit the board. She handles the synthetics and most particularly Santa Anita race course as well as any horse in racing does. Since it seems that most good turf horses do well on the pro-ride surface, I also wouldn't rule Gio Ponti out of this race either. Beyond that, it's difficult to say. Einstein has done well here in the past having won the S.A. Handicap earlier in the year. Richard's Kid, although a longshot, has done exceedingly well on synthetics having won the Pacific Classic and finishing third in the Goodwood. Summer Bird and Quality Road are the question mark's to me in the race. Having raced exclusively on conventional dirt, no one really knows how they will fire on synthetics. If he does, I feel Quality Road may be sitting on a big race having been bogged down on off tracks his last two races. Colonel John is also proven on synthetics, although I think this particular group of horses may be a little better competition than he used to facing. All and all, this is a tough race to handicap with a lot of "what if" factors to consider. I anxiously await. · 140 days ago
