What the Nation is saying about Medaglia d'Oro...

As the Kentucky Derby of 2009 approached, the trainer of my top ranked three-year-old made it clear that the horse’s owner had no interest in running his star in the Run for the Roses. I was disappointed that Hal Wiggins was so matter of fact in relaying the adamant wishes of Dolphus Morrison, but i...Read More

The 20 horses who will linGe up in the starting gate to run for the roses this year are horses like any of the other 28,000 Thoroughbreds born in 2010. • cocoa2 · Speightstown seems to be based off his wives, as far as distance goes. Haynesfield was out of a distance running mare while Speightstown's sprinters are usually out of sprinters. He is a good pick for any mare, but if you're looking for a colt who wants 10f and the mommy only wanted 8f, I think Hat Trick or Street Cry would be your man. · 37 days ago ·

  • kay.robinett · Mike in SB, I believe (someone please correct me if I am wrong) that every Triple Crown winner with the exception of Sir Barton began his three year old season in a sprint and stretched out in distance from there. Not sure why trainers have gotten away from this, and also from using well placed allowance races to bring their horses into form? · 82 days ago ·

  • dani.pugh · Mike, I believe the more you race/train while young the better the horse will handle racing down the road. There is no subsitute for the real thing, never. I get some horses run better off more rest, however not all are like that. I don't think that was the case of Violence's injury, meaning lack of conditioning. I think it was partially, but i also think the track and the pace had more to do with it. A horse who is lightly raced going 6f 1.08 in Feb is simply way way way too fast. Pletcher could not have forseen a pace that quick, nobody could. The only person who could have done anything at that point was the jockey, by keeping his colt farther off that pace, knowing it way too fast. · 82 days ago ·

  • Dressage3295 · Arabians add expression to the Trakehner breed while Thoroughbreds add athletic ability. When I started out breeding I had a sturdy mare that I bred to a Thoroughbred which resulted in a filly. I bred that mare to Kostalany and out popped my Grand Prix horse. Also, one of my current stallion prospects is a 1/4 Arabian- his trot is fabulous and comes from his damsire. I agree with that fact that most Trakehners are to the point where they don't need to be bred to arabs or thorughbreds, but there are still some that can be improved with outside blood. · 270 days ago ·
