What the Nation is saying about Masterstroke...

G2 winner and 2012 Arc 3rd Masterstroke has been quietly retired and will stand for 3,000 euros at Darley's Haras Du Logis. A pretty decent racehorse when in the hands of Andre Fabre, he is also beautifully bred, out of a daughter of the Urban Sea
Masterstroke finishes a disappointing 5th of 6 in his seasonal debut in the G3 Coutts Glorious Stakes over 12f at Goodwood, though in fairness he was coming into the race off a 10 month layoff. Signs weren't good for Masterstroke from the very beginning, as he sweated up badly going to post, and he was very lit up fighting Mickael Barzalona the whole way to post and through the first 2 or 3 furlongs of the race. Forgotten Voice won the race, now 2 for 2 with wins in the Wolferton Handicap & Glorious Stakes since returning from a 3 year absence from the flat.
Masterstroke will finally be making his 2013 seasonal debut in the G3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood on Friday, last seen finishing a very creditable 3rd behind Solelimia & Orfevre in the 2012 Arc De Triomphe. Masterstroke was supposed to race in Dubai over the winter in the G2 Cit of Gold but an incident at the starting gates at Meydan got him scratched from the race. He's now being trained by Charlie Appleby, the interrem trainer that has replaced Mahmood Al Zarooni for Godolphin. Also making his seasonal debut in the Glorious Stakes will be the John Gosden trained Aiken who beat Dunaden to win the G2 Grand Prix De Chantilly followed by 2 huge efforts in the G1 Irish St. Leger & G3 BC Long Distance Cup last season. Very anxious to see how both of these horses fare on Friday?
Carlos Laffon-Parias and Olivier Peslier came, saw and conquered in scintillating fashion as their four year old filly, Solemia, reeled in Orfevre in the dying strides of the Prix de L'Arc de TriompheRead More

JAPANESE raider Orfevre will become the first horse since Dalakhani in 2003 to defy a double-figure draw in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe if he is successful on Sunday. Read More
I've been doing some early handicapping for the Arc and this is one of the 3yr.old's likely for the field who jumps out at me as a potential e/w bet in the race. Masterstroke has quietly and sort of under the radar become a really good 3yr.old for Andre Fabre this season. Under the radar meaning he's not been talked about as much as some of the other top 3yr.old Arc contenders like Camelot, Saonois, and Bayrir have been. He's got several positives going for him with the Arc right around the corner. He's highly progressive, and never finished worse than 2nd in his career to date. His record being 6-4-2-0. His two 2nd place finishes were back in early summer, beaten a 1/2 length in the G2 Prix Hocquart and a short neck in the G3 Prix Du Lys. He's proven that he can beat older horses and stay 12f in the same race when he recently won the G2 Grand Prix De Deauville, and last but definitely not least, he's got Andre Fabre as his trainer. A man that's been an absolute master at getting his top 3yr.old's to run big races in the Arc over the years. Masterstroke definitely makes my short list of 3 or 4 horses I'm looking at right now for the Arc. JMO.
