Mastercraftsman
IMO, Aiden O'Brien made a mistake by not using his "3 big gun's" in the Breeders Cup races the way he should have. I think he would've been better served to have raced Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman as a double entry in the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile and brought over Fame and Glory to have raced in the Breeders Cup Classic. Fame and Glory, although finishing 6th to Twice Over in the Champion Stakes, had shown that he was definitely the best of the three at distances beyond a mile. All through the 2009 racing season, both Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman's best performances, save RVW's run in the Coral Eclipse at 10 furlongs, had been at a mile. I don't think Fame and Glory would've won the Classic, as probably only Sea The Stars may have been the only horse with a legitimate chance to beat Zenyatta, I do think he would've finished much better than Rip Van Winkle ultimately did. Plus, with Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman as a double entry in the Dirt Mile, O'Brien would've been almost a lock to win that race. IMO.

If, nuts, candy and nuts... I hear what you're saying, but the synthetics not only screwed with the results, but the trainer's minds as well!

Mastercraftsman
I'm really quite curious as to what the thought process of Aiden O'Brien and the connection's of Mastercraftsman were in ultimately deciding to go ahead and retire him after his 4th place finish in the Breeders Cup Dirt Mile. Granted, Mastercraftsman certainly didn't run his best race that day, but part of that can be contributed to his being pinned down at the rail and having a terrible trip for most of the race. This is a horse, while having run a long, aggressive campaign against Europe's biggest stars before coming over to the U.S., but has run no tougher or generally finished no worse in those races than has Rip Van Winkle. Rip Van Winkle, of the two, look's like far more the done in of both of these 3yr.olds. Although a slightly wide trip in the Classic, Rip Van Winkle had no excuses and was in the clear, unlike Mastercraftsman, for the entire race. I'm sure I've not been privy to all of the details factored in the decision. But it looks to me, imo, that Mastercraftsman still look's like the fresher and the horse with the most potential still to be shown of the two between Mastercraftsman and Rip Van Winkle. JMO.

Mastercraftsman
Of all the European invaders that came to the Breeders Cup races this year, Mastercraftsman really disappoint's me the most. The field he raced in the Dirt Mile was not nearly as tough of competition as he's run against all year in Europe. Granted, he didn't get the best of trip's and he broke late. But when that seam on the rail opened up and Johnny Murtagh couldn't get him to fire on through it, it really surprised me. I'm kind of disappointed to hear that he's been retired as I was looking forward to seeing him run a 4yr.old campaign.

Mastercraftsman is one of the European bankers of the meeting and should have too much class for Pyro. Furthest Land could represent some value in the place market.

Forget the Favorites, Gimme Some Prices
If there is one thing you can always count on in the Breeders' Cup it's that it will have it's share of longshot winners and mid-price overlays who get lost in the handicapping frenzy that is so much a part of the event.

Midshipman figures out front in Dirt Mile
The complexion of the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile changed dramatically since pre-entries were announced Oct. 28, with six horses that originally made it into the body of the race opting for other races or electing not to come. The most significant offshoot of those defections is that Midshipma...

Rip Could Have Eclipsed 'Stars'
There is no way of telling what might have been in any given race had circumstances been different. And it would be seem audacious to say that Rip Van Winkle was the best horse in the Coral Eclipse Stakes (Eng-I), won by Sea the Stars, but a close look at the race reveals several reasons why that st...

I watched the replay of the Coral Eclipse Stakes. What the author of this article describe's did happen, but it happened rather early in the race. The bottom line is when both Sea The Stars and Rip Van Winkle were slugging it out down the stretch, Sea The Stars reached back and got a little more and suddenly accelerated just enough to clear Rip Van Winkle and win the race. But I will say that Rip Van Winkle looked just as equally impressive to Sea The Stars that day in that race.

Mastercraftsman
I agree that his placement in the dirt mile is strange. The other issue is that the dirt mile is a quicker race with a bunched field on tight turns... much more room for a bad trip to take you out of the race. I also agree that Mastercraftsman is hugely talented... but perhaps his placement in this race is a state of confidence in Rip Van Winkle for the Classic.

Whether he run's in the B.C. Dirt Mile or the B.C. Classic, imo, this is the best horse entered in any race in this year's Breeders Cup races.

Frankly I'm surprised that O'Brien decided to run Mastercraftsman in the Dirt Mile instead of the Classic. Most may disagree with me on this statement, but I personally think that Mastercraftsman is a little more talented than Rip Van Winkle is. Just like Rip Van Winkle, he's also given Sea The Stars all he's wanted and then some racing in Europe this year. Hard to believe he's the favorite in this race and 20-1 in the Classic odds. I'd bet him in either race. I'd definitely take some of that 20-1 action. But in the Dirt Mile I believe he's the cream of this crop. If you're looking for a price, having been much on the improved of late, Pyro to hit the board at 10-1 might be a good bet.

Both of O'Brien's horses, Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman are for real. I've watched a lot of replays of races that they've either won or gave Sea The Stars all he wanted. Personally, although O'Brien doesn't seem to think so, I feel that Mastercraftsman is a bit more talented even then Rip Van Winkle. I plan to bet Mastercraftsman whether he's in the Dirt Mile or the Classic. I do, however, feel that Rip Van Winkle will be right there with the front runner's come Classic's end. If she sticks with the Classic, it would for me be difficult not to bet Zenyatta to at least hit the board. She handles the synthetics and most particularly Santa Anita race course as well as any horse in racing does. Since it seems that most good turf horses do well on the pro-ride surface, I also wouldn't rule Gio Ponti out of this race either. Beyond that, it's difficult to say. Einstein has done well here in the past having won the S.A. Handicap earlier in the year. Richard's Kid, although a longshot, has done exceedingly well on synthetics having won the Pacific Classic and finishing third in the Goodwood. Summer Bird and Quality Road are the question mark's to me in the race. Having raced exclusively on conventional dirt, no one really knows how they will fire on synthetics. If he does, I feel Quality Road may be sitting on a big race having been bogged down on off tracks his last two races. Colonel John is also proven on synthetics, although I think this particular group of horses may be a little better competition than he used to facing. All and all, this is a tough race to handicap with a lot of "what if" factors to consider. I anxiously await.
