Handsome Mars...http://www.thenational.ae/sport/horse-racing/horse-racing-mike-de-kocks-mars-on-the-shelf-until-dubai-world-cup
Ohh, poor thing
Rest in peace.
Rest in peace, boy... :(*
had a "cardiac event" after he flipped over the fence. did not need to be euthanized & passed on his own. Rest in Peace Mars.
It's only a gut feeling, but I have a hunch that Mars could end up doing really well in Dubai in 2014 for his new trainer Mike De Kock. He wouldn't be the first Coolmore castoff that De Kock has had success with, I.E, Eagle Mountain, Archipenko, etc...Mars didn't turn out to be the monster we were lead to believe he'd become off the tail end of that maiden win at Dundalk in July, 2012, but you need only look at the results of his G1 runs in 2013 to see this is a horse with some ability, though very quirky IMO. He finished 6th of 13 at a mile, green as a gord in the English 2000 Guineas, 6th of 12 stepped up to 12f in the Epsom Derby, a strong 3rd at a mile behind Dawn Approach & Toronado in the St James's Palace Stakes, and a very creditable 4th at 10f against top shelf older horses in the Coral-Eclipse. I think 10f will eventually prove to be the distance that best suits Mars, and based on how he handled the surface at Dundalk, I could see Mars doing well in any or all 3 rounds of the Al Maktoum Challenge and/or possibly the Dubai World Cup on tapeta at Meydan. Time will tell, but TJMO.
Mars has been transferred from Ballydoyle to the barn of Mike de Kock and will be prepared with the Dubai Winter Carnival in mind

  • ILuvTurfRacing · @Northport, I read Mars will be racing in Bernard Kantor's yellow silks with the blue epaulets for future races. · 1324 days ago
  • Northport · Since he seems like the leader of the syndicate that now owns the majority of him that seems fitting · 1324 days ago
Mars a beaten favorite today at Leopardstown in the G3 Meld Stakes by the Jim Bolger trained filly, Scintillula, who was 4th last weekend in the G1 Irish Oaks. I'm not suggesting that Mars isn't a horse with some ability, but IMO he's been massivly overhyped by Coolmore for a horse with only one maiden win at Dundalk to his credit. JMO.
  • Northport · Agreed. I think he has been overhyped and because of that often lands in races a bit over his head - until today. Perhaps he wants he wants more distance but not a G1? · 1342 days ago
struggling to understand the tactics of O'Brien mars is now a confirmed runner in the st james over 1m while magician is also a likely runner. Looks to me like hes trying to get Dawn approach beat and looking to keep horses away from ROTW so he can retired unbeaten after winning the irish derby and st leger
  • ILuvTurfRacing · @paul.nathan.946, I agree. O'Brien initially had Mars aimed at the G3 Tercentenary Stakes at 10f, which I think would've been a very winnable race for Mars, until this issue with Magician having gotten minor bruises on one of his legs Thursday night just surfaced. · 1383 days ago
I like that Aidan O'Brien has said he'll likely run Mars in the Tercentenary Stakes at Ascot during the royal meeting. Obviously this is a horse pretty highly thought of at Ballydoyle to have been thrown into the G1 English 2000 Guineas & G1 Epsom Derby with only a Dundalk maiden win under his belt, but I think Aidan O'Brien may have shot a bit too high that soon. The Tercentenary Stakes does 2 things for Mars, first of all it drops him back in trip from the 12f he just ran at Epsom to 10f, splittling the difference between the English Guineas & Epsom Derby, and secondly it drops him back in grade from G1 to G3, making this a very winnable race for him should he run.
  • ILuvTurfRacing · O'Brien also said he'll likely run Gale Force Ten in the G3 Jersey Stakes at Ascot instead of the G1 St. James's Palace Stakes. · 1385 days ago
Any reports or entries??
  • Northport · He was part of the Ballydoyle public work at the Curragh on March 24. O'Brien said after the work that he will be trained up to the Guineas. · 1457 days ago
Hi Everyone i am Paul Rhodes the owner and founder of http://www.aidanobrienfansite.com/ feel free to come and visit us for all the latest Coolmore Ballydoyle & Aidan O'Brien News
I Think Mars will be exceptional
Due to ground conditions, he is not set to race again until next year, but is still being pointed towards a classic campaign
Ranked high, is this one a 2yo?? No listings via DRF. Would like to learn more as pedigree appears huge.
  • northport · it is an irish two year old, won maiden at dundalk quite impressively last month, he is the early favourite for the 2013 derby/guineas, I believe his next goal for this year is the racing post trophy. He has been raced spareingly, telling me that aiden o'brien has high hopes for him · 1671 days ago
  • northport · here is a video of his maiden win http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=987FK6WOlZ4 · 1671 days ago
