  • LAZMANNICK · I love this point/counter point. I am a big fan of both, but have a softness for Manila because I believe he has been vastly underrated given his accomplishments and racing record. Jolly might have thought he would have fared well on dirt, but let’s not forget his first four lifetime starts were on dirt and he broke his maiden by 8 lengths in his fourth start. Impressive as that was he switched to turf in his next race. It was on turf that his potential started to show (the opposite of Cigar who was not distinguished on turf but became a champion when switched to dirt)……..That being said, I would rate Manila ahead of John Henry as the best turf horse in N/A history, but in my rankings this would still put him second to the great Round Table. Of 66 career lifetime starts, only 16 were on turf with 14 wins (including his first eight in a row), a second by a half length and a last place finish in the Washington Birthday when he cut his front heel. His wins were from 8.5 F to 12F and included the Arlington Hdcp at 1 3/16ths in 1.53.2 carrying 132 lbs., the San Marcos at 10F in 1.58.2 again carrying 132 lbs., and the 9F Stars N Stripes in 1.47.1 again carrying 132 lbs. his biggest feat on turf though was winning the United nations under a staggering 136 lbs. and giving the second place horse, Noureddin 19 lbs. They didn’t have an Arlington Million back then, but if they would have I’m sure Round Table would have made his presence felt. · 646 days ago ·

  • KyOaksRunner · Excellent Point/Counterpoin, I think it's the best so far. I am a wholehearted fan of John Henry, and while I think his career outshines Manila's, I think Manila would be my choice in this debate because his career was cut short ans was brilliant up to that time. · 646 days ago ·

Previous to this Million race Manila had won nine (nine times, Ferris?) straight races until suffering defeat with a second place finish in the Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga to seven year old Talakeno. The winning streak was quite impressive considering the races he had won such as the Lexingt...Read More

  • footlick · Very true Laz- but you have to remember that our turf horses run on flat, small courses compared to the European counterparts. So, I never compare what an American horse does here. Part of the uniqueness in European racing is the difference of the courses and the layouts. Plus the fact that a soft turf course to us is probably good to firm there. Last year was the first time that I heard Euro's really being vocal about the hardness of the American tracks. And Sir Henry won't bring Midday this year because of the turf course at Churchill. The two racing worlds are so different. Interesting point about the breeding of those three, but remember they were sired by horses who made their name in Europe before standing here. Lyphard, Vaguely Noble and Sea-Bird were European champions who were brought here to stand stud. So yes, they were American bred, but they were sired by sired who raced in Europe, so they were very familiar to Europeans. But it is a very interesting point, as all of yours always are. · 655 days ago ·

Racing needs to bring its head out of the sand and into the light. The leaders of this sport need to make sure that it is not being cheapened and stand up and fight for what will improve it, rather than let others make decisions that just lead the sport deeper into oblivion.Read More

For the most part, the bigger names on this year’s Triple Crown trail have yet to be seen on the track in 2011. That leaves the way open for other promising colts to begin jockeying for a shot at one of the major prep races and, if all goes well, a trip to Louisville. While Wilkinson hasn’t yet earne...Read More
