  • travel_vic · If one recalls the Triple Crown winners, and a few that just missed: these race hardly took a thing out of them. THey were monsters eating holes in their feed tubs and almost kickly down the stalls between races. IF, for no other reason, the Derby winner IS showing many of the signs of those who did hit the triple or who just missed. · 34 days ago ·

Malibu Moon has produced some nice three year olds this year (Orb, Freedom Child, Kauai Katie, Magical Moon, Cue the Moon, etc.)
Trainer Shug McGaughey and Jockey Joel Rosario combined to win their first Kentucky Derby when the 5-1 favorite Orb closed from a distant 16th place over the sloppy Churchill Downs track to take the Run for the Roses. Read More

  • travel_vic · I don't like the polycrap, it smells, gums up tails and throats etc., BUT since it is the surface I see everyday, I play it....I have a theory that the nature of a polytrack surface has to do MORE with the daily fluctuation in temperature and the drainage of the cushion MORE than the top surface itself, AND when it is close to wearing out, the front end bias is extraordinary.......Since about 10 tons of Jelly cord has been added here over the last two weeks, speed should NOT be to big a factor this weekend at Woodbine where just about all the races will be sprints. · 63 days ago ·

  • cocoa2 · Speightstown seems to be based off his wives, as far as distance goes. Haynesfield was out of a distance running mare while Speightstown's sprinters are usually out of sprinters. He is a good pick for any mare, but if you're looking for a colt who wants 10f and the mommy only wanted 8f, I think Hat Trick or Street Cry would be your man. · 68 days ago ·

  • icyhotboo · "Orb won, but Violence ran a better race. adaman" Along with Danni's eplanation I agree... I don't know exactly if this was the point in time that Violence became hurt, but in the stretch he pretty much stopped running, then when challenged he came on again, this I've seen many times in many races, but is me or was his stride different at that point? · 113 days ago ·

  • Floridaf · As far as turf races go, Lady of Shamrock does have the advantage. She has a G3 win, a G2 place, and a G1 win all on turf; compare that to Eden's Moon's G2 turf win. As for the entire 3-YO filly division, Eden's Moon has the slight advantage, IMO. Of course, none of these fillies have multiple G1 wins, so if a G1 winner takes home one or both of the weekend's races, then she (or they) will automatically rocket to the top of the division. · 305 days ago ·

  • IronMaidens · Thanks for the compliments. AnnaK, breeders/buyers do plenty of research and have specific goals in mind when breeding/ buying horses. Although there is plenty of commercial breeding, the old adage of breeding the best to the best and hoping for the best still applies today. I hope that answers your question. If not, please email me privately. · 461 days ago ·

  • AnnaK · Answers my question, thank you, now another unrelated to the above, but you're a good springboard. William Nack in the 4 part Secretariat YouTube (part 2 at 4:55on) is talking about Sec's progeny, a great broodmare sire etc, but that he can't think of a truly great racehorse who reproduced himself and he mentions,Man O War, Citation, Count Fleet, Alydar,Seattle Slew, Affirmed. Mentions neither Native Dancer, nor Northern Dancer. Nack does mention Eclipse, but do you think either Dancer qualifies as achieving reproducing as good as they ran? · 460 days ago ·
