What the Nation is saying about Make Music For Me...

It is now more than two weeks since the conclusion of the Triple Crown and more than seven weeks since we have seen many of the horses that started only in the Kentucky Derby (gr. 1) presented by Yum! Brands. Four of the contenders from the Derby-Preakness-Belmont trail returned to the races recentl...Read More

  • cugel the clever · Yup - I was wrong about Ice Box. He ran a clunker. But none of the horses, including First Dude ran a "solid" race. Slowest Belmont in 15 years and despite a harness-racer pace, First Dude faded in the stretch and ran the last quarter in 26.8. There were no "champions" on the track at Belmont on Saturday. · 55 days ago

By the way, if you read my comments for Ice Box, Stately Victor and Make Music For Me, you would be able to peace the sentence together and get the point. They all ran poorly in the Belmont.
  • johnsnare · I handicapped this race two weks ago, and concluded, any horse in the Belmont could win. A very ordinary group this year, and my picks ran first and second. On paper Drosselmeyer was clearly the best. Never off the board in all his races, and bad racing luck. First Dude could never carry his speed the Belmont distance, and would fade. He did not last for the Preakness, how could he last the Belmont? Interesting race, and look forward to the Travers. NYRA. Pleaswe fire JZ, and bring back Sinatra, and New York, New York. You wonder why your handle is down. Some of us old timers kept NYRA afloat with our donations to Aqueduct,Belmont. and Saratoga. I don/t see Hip/Hop supporting NYRA. · 55 days ago
Drosselmeyer grabbed the lead in the middle of the stretch and went onto a three-quarter-length victory over a fast-closing Fly Down on Saturday afternoon at Belmont Park to take the 142nd running of the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Stakes in a 13-1 upset.Read More
  • cugel the clever · This was the weakest Belmont field in decades - the slowest time in 15 years and no horse ran the last quarter in less than 26 seconds. Despite setting a harness-race early pace, First Dude had nothing left for the last quarter. Even Drosselmeyer and Fly Down had 26+ final quarters, which proves that they didn't so much have a finishing kick as they simply passed tired, ordinary horses. Ice Box had no excuse whatsoever - some people are saying that the slow early pace killed his chances - this is nonsense. If he had managed a 25-second final quarter, he would have won the race (in the Florida Derby, he ran the last quarter in 24.55 seconds). Here are the final-quarter times for the first 9 placers, direct from the official chart: · 55 days ago

BELMONT STAKES QUOTES   Bill Mott, winning trainer of Drosselmeyer (No. 7): “I thought he was in a good position. I knew they were going slow, but he was in range. People don’t know it, but this is the second Belmont winner I’ve saddled. I saddled Victory Gallop [in the 1998 Belmont] for Elliot...Read More
The third and final jewel of the Triple Crown for 2010 will feature neither of the winners of the first two legs of the series. Super Saver, the Derby winner, and Lookin At Lucky, the Preakness winner, both elected to pass on "The Test Of Champions" and will instead look to run another day.Read More
After Belmont Stakes morning-line favorite Ice Box and stablemate Fly Down schooled in the gate and galloped this morning, Hall of Fame trainer Nick Zito was asked if his late closers would be closer to the pace in Saturday’s 1½-mile race.   “It depends,” said Zito. “Obviously, Ice Box has a gr...Read More
Every day seems to bring a new Belmont Stakes (gr. I) pick. What else is new? This year’s Belmont is that kind of race. There is no standout, and the majority of the horses entered seem to have a legitimate shot to win. Of course, as usual, we’ll be concentrating on longshots and potential overlays. ...Read More
Handicapping this Belmont Stakes comes down to an opportunity to wager on a relatively evenly-matched full field that will likely produce a fairly good priced winner. The favorite, Ice Box, is a come from behind runner who will need a strong pace up front or an altered running style to insure victor...Read More
Dale Romans, trainer of First Dude (No. 11, 7-2): “When Ramon [Dominguez] jumped off him after the Florida Derby with all the trouble he was in, he said, ‘the Belmont will be this horse’s race because he wants to go a mile and a half and he’ll love that track.’ We sent him up here, it’s been two wee...Read More

At Belmont Park, Stay Put went an easy half-mile just after the renovation break under exercise rider Loren Diego, with NYRA clockers catching the chestnut colt in 50.62.   “I liked the way he breezed this morning,’ said Diego, who is supervising Stay Put’s Belmont preparations until trainer S...Read More
We have seen numerous occasions when horses who do not have an abundance of stamina in their pedigree fall short going a mile and a half. So, you can do all the handicapping you want, but if your horse can’t get the trip, no Beyer numbers or speed sheets numbers are going to help get him to the winn...Read More
Belmont hopeful Stately Victor arrived at Belmont Park a few hours behind schedule Thursday, but no worse for the trip.   “Everything went smoothly, but the plane was a little late,” trainer Mike Maker said at his Belmont barn Friday morning. “I think they had some mechanical issues. • cigar · A lot of people are talking about this horse, but I'm confused. Ice Box beat Make Music For Me with a trip that was lengths worse. Both enjoyed a dream pace setup as well, one which is unlikely to manifest in the Belmont. On second thought, let the buzz drive these guys and their prices down...! · 69 days ago
