What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

After a filly has already won seven stakes races, defeated males twice, subjugated horses of her own gender, there isn’t much more you can ask of her.  However, owner Jess Jackson was hellbent on testing Rachel Alexandra and thus he scheduled a date with her in the Woodward. Read More
  • cigar · This was a more exciting finish than the Classic. The Classic finish is overrated in a sense because Zenyatta NEVER had any traffic trouble and just did what she always does (which is impressive) but this effort was remarkable. · 46 days ago
The somewhat universal belief, as the calendar turned to October, was that Summer Bird and Quality Road as 3YOs were better than their elders, specifically Stephen Foster winner Macho Again.  The three of them were to meet and settle it on the track and the spot was the Jockey Club Gold Cup, th...Read More
Three-year-old Blame ensconced himself as a leading player in next year's national handicap picture when he seized the lead from fellow sophomore Misremembered at the eighth pole and held on for a neck victory in the $460,600 Clark Handicap Presented by Norton Healthcare (gr. II) at Churchill Downs ...Read More
  • Rossington · I was really impressed by Blame's effort in the Clark Handicap today. Not really having the best of trip's and being able to overcome Misremembered and late charging Einstein and Giant Oak. This is definitely a colt to watch for in the future after making his "I'm for real" announcement in the Clark today. · 73 days ago
They call it a handicap, but not because of post positions, for crying out loud. And yet here's Einstein being asked not only to carry high weight of 123 pounds Friday in the 135th Clark Handicap, but to start from the outside in post 14 of the Churchill Downs starting gate. "What can you do?" asked...Read More
It's been a long and storied career for Einstein and his trainer Helen Pitts-Blasi. The long road which featured victories on all surfaces from coast-to-coast comes to an end when on Friday he takes on a full field for the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs.Read More

  • dustino140 · I'm reading that he's been supplemented to a race in Hong Kong in December, so he might have one more race in him before he's done. · 75 days ago
  • bband · Maybe after drawing the 14-hole... yuck... they decided to pencil in one more. Always feels good to hit your last shot before calling it a day! · 75 days ago
This weekend's lineup is tremendous, with 16 graded stakes at Churchill, Aqueduct, and Hollywood. I'm especially looking forward to the 2-year-old races, as well as the Cigar Mile and Clark Handicap.Read More
The heavy lifting is all done and according to trainer Dallas Stewart, MACHO AGAIN (Macho Uno) is "ready to roll" for Friday's 135th running of the Clark H. (G2) at Churchill Downs. "I feel good about our chances," Stewart said of Macho Again, who is owned by West Point Thoroughbreds. "I like where ...Read More

  • arazi · I believe that sounds correct. · 80 days ago
  • Rossington · Devanni, yes that was said about Einstein. Before the Classic it was being stated that this would most likely be Einstein's last race. But I don't think his connection's counted on an 11th place finish in the Classic. I, for one, am personally glad that they're giving this great champion one more shot at going out with glory. And against a pretty competitive field in Misrembered, Bullsbay, Macho Again, Giant Oak, and Furthest Land. All the best to Einstein. I'll surely be sentimentally rooting for him to win the Clark Handicap. · 79 days ago
Up until a couple days ago,  trainer Dallas Stewart was planning on running Macho Again in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.  Those plans changed in an instant after the 4-year-old gray came back from a workout at Churchill Downs a couple days ago.Read More
  • medlocke · I feel bad for Macho Again's connections. I know they're looking out for the horse which should always come first, but he's show a lot of heart this year, winning the Stephen Foster and finishing 2nd in the Whitney and the Woodward. I know he was likely to be a real long shot, unproven on synthetic's, but it would have been nice to see him at least get his shot. Best wishes to Macho Again. He's a horse with heart, imo. · 110 days ago
  • arazi · Still a bummer to see Macho Again, Gitano Hernando and Rail Trip drop out of the BC Classic. Hopefully, it will still be a full field... · 110 days ago
As we all know there is always an angle or two we can latch on to in the Breeders' Cup. The trick is finding them among the morass of stakes horses that line up for the 14 races. There probably are more chances of landing a longshot on a synthetic surface, because, in all honesty, does anyone really...Read More
If Sea the Stars does not make the trip to California, which seems more likely than not, and joins Rachel Alexandra on the absentee list, it will create a void never before seen in the Breeders’ Cup. Read More

  • mshutty · And the BC organization has no one to blame but itself. Remember when we all had a collective moan when it was announced that the BC would be held at Santa Anita two consecutive years? Our disdain for this idea is justified. I agree wth mdracing...what do the connections of Rachel have to prove. The only risk to the HOY honors is running in the BC and getting beat. If you owned/trained Rachel, what would you do? · 125 days ago

Summer Bird won Saturday's Jockey Club Gold Cup capping-off an awesome season in New York which included wins in the Belmont Stakes and Travers. The last horse to make the sweep was Temperence Hill in 1980.Read More

  • rossington · I think if he win's the Classic he should be considered for HOY. Also, what if Zenyatta wins the Lady's Secret, runs her record to 13-0 (tying Personal Ensign) and then came back and beat the boys in the B.C. Classic, ending her season or maybe even her career at 14-0. If that scenario comes to pass,IMO, how could you deny her at the very least co-HOY? · 127 days ago
  • Medlocke · I noticed on their cover page underneath the picture of SummerBird that it says SummerBird completed the sweep or tri-fecta of the 3 New York races, then stated that it hadn't been done since Temperence Hill did it in 1980. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Easy Goer the last to do it in 1989? · 127 days ago
In most races, a keen understanding of handicapping and tools such as Ragozin speed figures are usually the key elements in selecting a winner. Yet in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes (G1) today at Belmont Park you need to add one other item to the list: a degree in meteorology. Read More

The Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup will be run at Belmont Park on Saturday, October 3rd, and the favorite for the ten furlong test will likely be Belmont Stakes (G1) and Travers (G1) hero Summer Bird. He is the other bird no more, and he has become especially dangerous since adding blinkers and showin...Read More
  • medlocke · I'll give Summer Bird credit where credit is due. Winning the Belmont and the Travers is more than respectable. But even his tactical speed and stalking trip will not help him on Saturday if the Belmont track stays dry. Quality Road's speed on a dry track, I think, will just prove to much for Summer Bird to tackle. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprise to see it be Macho Again making the big run at and trying to catch Quality Road just like he did against Rachael Alexandra. · 129 days ago
  • mdracing69 · Summer Bird does have some advantages in the JC Gold Cup. He is a grade one winner at Big Sandy and exits a grade one victory at ten furlongs. He has enough tactical speed to keep Quality Road in his sights as well. That being said, I still think Quality Road will prevail on Saturday. Summer Bird may have peaked in the Travers, while Quality Road should be rounding back to his Florida Derby form. Probably not a great betting race but I'll be glued to the TV nonetheless. · 129 days ago

After standing in the gate, Belmont S. (G1) and Travers S.
