What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Machen...

It seems as though this horse may be retired, but I don't recall hearing an official word. Can anyone confirm?

Here we go again, days before the Oaks and Derby and the contenders are dropping like flies. The inclination to want to beat the favorite is a natural one. Most years on the Derby Trail, I happily fall into that pattern. Picking the Kentucky Derby favorite all spring is not nearly as much fun as tabbing a horse that is not so highly regarded. Some years though are different. The favorite is...Read More

  • LDP19 · I wonder why every horse can have a second chance but Mo. He was very under trained, and trained almost backwardsly. Pletcher revved him up for the wrong race then let him go with 2 easy half mile works in 4 weeks. The flip flop of venues was also not a fantastic decision. Mike made a mistake there, but everyone makes a few. Mo did not fold like a weak tent, in fact he fought pretty hard even though he, IMO did not look comfortable over that track. · 1104 days ago ·

Assistant trainer Rick Giannini of conditioner Neil Howard’s barn reported that Courtlandt Farms’ Machen and Gaillardia Racing’s Wilkinson, fifth and sixth, respectively, in Saturday’s $1 million Louisiana Derby, both came out of the race in good order.   “They’re both fine,” said Giannini. “M...Read More
Another tosser for May 7th. He would have had a romp in the LD but for the fact that he just really isn't that talented. A lot has been said of this colt, that he is just starting to bloom etc. but my money will go elsewhere on May 7th in the KD.
In scanning the latest 2011 Kentucky Derby Future Odds released Sunday by Lucky’s, I was struck by the number of underlays among the top choices. This is nothing new for Derby futures, but now as we hit the 45 day mark from the big event, it is clear that the top choices offer little to no real valu...Read More

  • arazi · Wow, that changed quick! I guess that's what racing secretaries need to do - put out a press release saying you have a 5-horse field and all of a sudden everyone jumps in. Not that Elite Alex's connections made a bad move, but it's funny that they scratched from an 11-horse field saying it was too big and ended up with 13. For what it's worth, I really like Nacho Business in this spot. · 1126 days ago ·

  • mshutty · The value of analyzing these prep races both before and after they are run can pay dividends. Here's the comment on Premier Pegasus after the San Vicente "Premier Pegasus ran a deceivingly good race in that he was involved in the early fray (hot early fractions), appeared finished but dug in gamely to hold third.
