What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

Is anyone else concerned he's missed some training a couple of times now? When was his last work?
  • gardenesque1 · Bad weather followed by a minor illness caused a small setback for the 2yo champ. No reason to be concerned as long as he gets back to regular routine and runs well in March return. · 5 days ago
I know Lookin at Lucky hasn't run yet... but do you get the feeling that we haven't seen the Derby winner yet this year? I do... and I don't think it's Lucky either. Winslow Homer and Jackson Bend are nice horses, but they strike me as the types that can run a solid 3rd or 4th in the Derby... close but no cigar.
  • bardiggler · L.A.L is a definite threat. Homer and Bend, I'm not sold on them yet. Check out Eightyfiveinafifty, this horse is the real deal if they enter it and Tiz Chrome, that bloodline just breeds winners. Bullsbay, Well Armed, Col. John, Da'Tara, and Bear Now are all progeny of Tiznow. · 11 days ago
  • stonecoldmiracle7 · looking at lucky will destroy all new comers in his way to becoming the tripple crown champion . · 10 days ago
In my last Derby post, I stated that a new player (Take Control) had arrived on the scene. Unfortunately, the Baffert trainee has shin problems and needs a few months to recover, so he’s off the Derby trail. Barn also has Conveyance, who had to work for his San Rafael (G3) tally on Jan 16th. He will...Read More

We're still three and a half months away from the Kentucky Derby, and as everyone knows, a lot can happen between now and then. But acknowledging that, you would be hard-pressed to find many that would say Lookin At Lucky is not the solid favorite at this point.Read More
  • ajump08 · Baffert a smart, and knows not to get ahead of himself. Very interesting that he only mentions Tiz Chrome and Take Control in addition to Lookin At Lucky, he has many more than three 3yo's. Baffert will be heard from one of the dirt tracks, longshot here, but Sunland Park is pretty close to SO CA and the Sunland Derby's new graded status should give at least two horses a spot in the gate for the DERBY. · 27 days ago
  • horses · Take Control's maiden race was ultra-impressive. · 26 days ago
Wearing blinkers for the first time, Lookin At Lucky worked four furlongs on Pro-Ride at Santa Anita Jan. 9 in preparation for his 3-year-old debut, probably in the San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) on March 13.Read More
  • thedodge · I didn't like this horse I thought his times were to slow. Now Baffert adds blinker's and if he draws out from these horse's next start and run a nice number then i will be a fan. Also i like his breeding never had a problem with that. according to Dr. Steven Roman his sire and dame sire are balanced speed for non-chef-de-race types which is up to 10 furlongs. · 29 days ago
The end of the year has arrived, and this is my final derby Top 10 of 2009. All Derby hopefuls turn three on January 1st, and as we inch closer to the first Saturday in May, a new player (Take Control) has arrived on the scene. Read More

  • thedodge · Take Control is to green to make the Kentucky Derby his next start is going to be an allowance race. He needs the seasoning and will lack the graded stakes money also to make the derby a horse needs a good mind and talent. He is talented no doubt about it maybe second half of the year that's my guess. · 29 days ago
  • thedodge · As for Baffert be absolutely loaded, I don't thing so from the two i liked one Clutch Player died the other Tiz Chrome he's bred to route acts like an old pro has run fast 97 beyer yes only 6 1/2f. My worry with him he has short legs maybe he's the next Northern Dancer will have to wait. For the other's Tiny Woods Sprinter no doubt, Conveyance Dr. Steven Romans says Indian Charlie his sire and Holy Bull his dame sire are intermediate Speed (non chef-de race). And in conclusion Looking At Lucky has'nt run that fast so i'am not buying. · 29 days ago

  • bband · Can't believe Borel can't get a little credit - what he did in May was simply sensational! · 32 days ago
  • medlocke · No matter what's said or done, they're both great filly/mare's. They've both had incredible year's. But IMO, and only IMO, the only reason they're both being considered for HOY is both of their abilities to beat the colt's. When you look at that, the quality of competition factor has to come into play. Granted, Rachel had a couple of more win's on the year than Zenyatta. But take a look at the World Thoroughbred Rankings and see how many colt's in the top 20 or 25 that Zenyatta beat, then take a look at how many in that group that Rachel beat. It's not even close. Zenyatta beat the much tougher male opposition. As far as female opposition, they both beat good fillies, but fillies out of both of their leagues. But, even in that category, as it turn's out, Zenyatta beat the Ladies Classic Champion multiple times in 09' as well. No offense at all intended to Rachel Alexandra supporters, because I too think she's a remarkable filly. But for 09', if I had a vote, based on what I just laid out my vote for HOY would go for Zenyatta hand's down. JMO. · 30 days ago
Very talented horse with a bright future. 2-Year-Old Eclipse Champion as well.
Lookin at Lucky ran the best race in defeat on Breeders' Cup weekend and now looks primed to rebound in Saturday's CashCall Mile, the final major race for 2-year-olds before the Derby trail begins in earnest after the holiday season.Read More

  • cigar · McPeek and co. thought they had the race won at Santa Anita... I was never visually impressed with the overall performance, however, and I want Lookin at Lucky out of there and that's it. Maybe a Look / everyone but Noble's promise zacta is in order? · 53 days ago
  • Medlocke · Lookin at Lucky is, if you'll pardon the pun, a very good looking 2yr.old with, IMO, a world of promise in racing. He's ran really effectively on the synthetic track's and made an awesome accounting of himself, even in defeat, in the Breeders Cup Juvenile. I don't think many would argue the talent is there, but can this talent adapt to the conventional dirt. That's likely the only unanswered question for this 2yr.old, and likely the only question that would prevent him from being a favorite for the 2010 Kentucky Derby as well as the other two Triple Crown races. · 52 days ago
It would be exciting to see him get back into the Winner's Circle on Saturday.
  • cigar · He should win... that trip cost him not just the win, but a few lengths to the good as well. · 53 days ago
He's got the 2yo Eclipse pretty much sealed up, but it would be great to see him dominate the Hollywood Futurity to kick-start an exciting Triple Crown trail.
  • cigar · If he handles dirt, I think he's a legit Derby horse at this point in time. His style and breeding suggests the Derby profile is right up his alley. · 56 days ago
My first Kentucky Derby top ten post appeared here on Nov. 15th. A few prep races have been run since, so here is my updated list. Is it me, is next year's Derby crop uninspiring, or is there just no excitement out there? Lookin at Lucky was terrific in BC defeat, and we've just seen impressive performances by Super Saver, Buddy's Saint and American Lion. And there's the undefeated Jackson Bend waiting in the wings. Or maybe it's because nobody has heard of most of these horses before a couple weeks ago, most haven't seen Jackson Bend since he's raced at Calder, and it's difficult to get excited about Vale of York (with good reason).
  • ruby · I think it's still to early to get excited about Derby. But it could be a really good crop. The jury is still out. · 66 days ago
  • cigar · Crop is weak so far... and it's never too early to get excited about the Derby! · 66 days ago

It's all over but the debating. Zenyatta's victory in the Breeders' Cup Classic on Saturday at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting has reignited the debate over the 2009 Horse of the Year between her and Rachel Alexandra, who had an equally brilliant year. Read More
  • Rossington · I take nothing away from Rachael Alexandra. She's a remarkable filly that's accomplished remarkable thing's that your average filly just doesn't get done against the boy's. But that said, this is how I break down the debate, and this is just my personal opinion, I speak for no one else but myself. While Rachael has looked amazing against males, Jesse Jackson is careful to pick races where only about 2 or 3 real tough contenders are in any one race she run's against males. Zenyatta dove right into the deep end of the pool. First time ever against males, first time ever at 1-1/4, defending her undefeated record, and against one of the most loaded with talent male field's assembled all year. She faced, she raced, and she won overcoming all of these obstacle's. I kind of feel like Rachael took the easy path at Saratoga this summer when she was working extremely well and had a choice to run against Summer Bird, Quality Road, Hold Me Back, and Kensei in the Travers and took the easier race in the Woodward facing very little other than Macho Again who is 20-6-6-0 lifetime, and Bullsbay. Or even moreover from a different point of view, if the Breeders Cup Classic would have been run back east on conventional dirt at Churchill Downs, Belmont, Monmouth, or Saratoga, take your pick, and you ask Jesse Jackson to race his filly against 8 Grade 1 winning, and most multiple Grade 1 winning males, plus Zenyatta would he have put her in the race doubtful. Even on dirt this field had more competition than Jackson is comfortable with in racing Rachael against males, imo. I think it would take her racing another 5 or 6 races to compete against every male that was in this race. Every one had R.A. already penciled in as HOY before the Classic because most of the people who cover horse racing gave Zenyatta little to no chance of winning the Classic. After the way she overcame the delay at the gate, broke on the wrong lead, and was last for a good bit of the race, then to explode in the stretch to go by Gio Ponti, which is not an easy task, not only did she win, she won impressively. IMO, if Zenyatta is denied HOY after her performance on Saturday, and Rachael as well was welcome to be in that starting gate, it will be absolutely CRIMINAL and will FOREVER be a DARK STAIN an the members of the thoroughbred racing industry who make the HOY decision. Remember, this is JMO. No one elses. · 89 days ago
  • ruby · This is an interesting debate, but I'm not sure why it is a close one. Rachel was exciting, but Zenyatta beat the best on Championship Day. End of Debate. · 88 days ago
ZENYATTA (Street Cry [Ire]) climaxed one of the most brilliant careers in racing history with a thrilling victory in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), becoming the first female to win the coveted race and extending her unbeaten streak to 14. The effort to overcome her m...Read More
  • Rossington · John Shirreffs must really be on cloud nine after the weekend he just had in the Breeders Cup. Zenyatta's run really needs no explanation, it speak's for itself. Life is Sweet, however, ran like a filly with a world of talent and look's like a filly that may even have better races ahead of her should she decide to stay in training for next year. Garrett Gomez really rode a masterful race on Life is Sweet. I kind of felt going into the Ladies Classic when she was sent off with morning line odds of 8-1 that she may be the one in the race that was being overlooked. Much like I felt Gio Ponti was in the Classic. Great job by Shirreffs and congrats to the connection's of Life is Sweet and Zenyatta. Great performances from both fillies. · 91 days ago
The presence of the most accomplished United States-based colts thus far and a strong contingent from Europe should spell value for those who wager on the Nov. 7 Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) at Santa Anita Park.Read More
  • Rossington · Being undefeated and winning easily over the synthetics, Looking At Lucky is certainly the horse to beat in the B.C. Juvenile. D'Funnybone is a horse with a lot of natural speed and could certainly be the one to press him. But D'Funnybone has been primarily a conventional dirt runner, which, if he stay's healthy may serve him well in May at Churchill Downs, but it's unclear how he will rate over the pro-ride surface at Santa Anita. The distance of the race may also be a concern for D'Funnybone as well. · 100 days ago
In this edition, we'll touch on the final preps for the two Breeders' Cup juvenile races for males and our initial observations on the participants exiting those races that are headed to California.Read More
  • Rossington · I think Lookin at Lucky and D'Funnybone will be the two to beat in the B.C. Juvenile. In the B.C. Juvenile Turf, Interactif, imo, is the best 2yr.old in training in the U.S. right now, dirt or turf. I wouldn't be surprised to see his connection's after the Breeders Cup races try him on dirt sometime early in 2010. If he takes to the dirt he could be a real player in next year's Triple Crown Series. His toughest competition in the Juvenile Turf, on paper anyway, looks to be the European horse Viscount Nelson as they're both already proven winner's with Interactif being 4-3-0-0 and Viscount Nelson being 4-2-1-1. This race should prove to be an interesting match up between these two juvenile stars. But I'd have to give a slight edge to Interactif. · 103 days ago
