  • arazi · I still think Warrior's Reward has one more big race in him. Let's hope we get to see it on BC day - he could be really tough in a one-turn BC Dirt Mile! · 1306 days ago ·

With spring racing nearly at an end, I find myself utterly disappointed by the quality of this year’s 3-year-old male crop. There, I said it. I know some contrarians out there will disagree, that I'm being too harsh, but after the results thus far (not to mention one of the slowest Belmont Stakes in...Read More
Up — TV ratings: The Derby overnights were the best they had been since 1992, the year Lil E. Tee won the Run for the Roses. Not sure the reason for the increase, especially considering the expected favorite, Eskendereya, dropped out the weekend before with an injury. Nevertheless, the numbers bear ...Read More

Trainer Alexis Barba expressed pleasure with both the performance of MAKE MUSIC FOR ME (Bernstein) and the manner in which the bay colt came out of his late-closing, fourth-place finish in Saturday's Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs.Read More
Slop, the great equalizer. As if this year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) isn’t equal enough, we’re about to get bombarded with a prolonged rain unlike anything the Derby has ever seen.Read More
According to Weather.Com there is an 80% chance of precipitation on Saturday at Churchill Downs. With an abundance of rain threatening to turn the dirt track into a sea of slop, I ventured online to track down which horses will enjoy an off track - - and I have great news: ALL of the contenders...Read More
  • humphrey · Many tracks wind up having the "clean silks syndrome" in wet weather as front runners go out, raise a rooster tail that none of the other horses want to eat. · 1447 days ago ·
According to influential newspaper editor Horace Greeley, it would be wise for us to “Go West, young man.” Many will be taking his advice and looking that direction when making their selections for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) May 1 at Churchill Downs, as the two top choices i...Read More
Earlier foals are traditionally expected to perform earlier on the track, but as the Kentucky Derby has proven in recent years, this is not always the case. May foals completed a 2009 trifecta.Read More
AMERICAN LION (post position 7, jockey David Flores, 30-1) – Trainer Eoin Harty: “I’m quite happy. It doesn’t change the way the horse is going to run, one way or the other. Seven is a lucky number for me. Well Armed was No. 7 in Dubai.” AWESOME ACT (post position 16, jockey Julien Leparoux, 10-1) –...Read More

The post positions have been drawn for the 2010 Kentucky Derby and the two favorites took the worst of it. Lookin At Lucky will break from the dreaded rail post and has been installed as the 3-1 morning line favorite. The Bob Baffert trainee is exiting a troubled 3rd in the Santa Anita Derby and mus...Read More

  • mdracing69 · Where they leave the gate is not as important as how they break. Numerous things can happen to any entrant from any post at the break and/or during the race in a 20-horse field. A horse can draw a perfect post but a stumbling start can blow his/her perceived advantage. A horse can break sideways and wipe out other entrants. 'Lucky and 'Sidney are seemingly the two best horses and either can win from anywhere if they get the right trips. You have to be lucky and good to win the Derby. · 1449 days ago ·
  • medlocke · I really think that Sidney's Candy is big enough, strong enough, and fast enough to compensate for having the #20 post position. Similar to how Big Brown was in the 2008 Derby. I think he'll break quickly and smartly, and slide over out front, ahead of the field. If he's able to do that, then it just becomes about whether or not he has the stamina at 1-1/4 to hold off the rest of the Kentucky Derby field. My one and only concern about Sidney's Candy is the conventional dirt question? Will his synthetic form translate that effectively to dirt? If it does, I think he'll be the horse to beat, with Eskendereya out of the Derby picture. Because it certainly didn't appear watching Sidney's Candy in the Santa Anita Derby that having to travel another 1/8 mile is going to be a problem for him. JMO. · 1448 days ago ·
A.E. Housman’s famous poem says it all: “When I was one-and-twenty.” Oh, the irony of it all. Had Lookin at “Lucky” drew No. 1 in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) in any year from 1998 to 2009, he would have had the No. 1 choice of post position in the selection process that was u...Read More
