Older Comments about Linda's Chief...

I sort of remember that SI had his obituary and it said he bolted to the rail and flipped over it, breaking either his back or his neck. It almost seems he'd had enough of racing.
  • travel_vic · JUST purchased for over 2 million, this colt, the ONLY one ever to be favored over Secretariat in a race that they ran together was entered in a 7 furlong race at the old Hollywood (before it was re calliabrated to 9 furlongs). The California T-bred breeder's sales pavilion sat along the chute between the 7 furlong start and the point where the track met the back straight so the horses disappeared for a bit after breaking if you were looking at the contest from the grandstands. I think 9 started and only 8 came out from behind the pavillion. Linda's Chief flipped and broke his back. Over 2 million up in smoke and a fairly good but distance limited animal gone. I saw him in the Cal Derby and Baeza used all in his bag of tricks to keep him in front as he won by less than 1/2 length. · 933 days ago

This was one fast and fantastic racehorse.

  • LAZMANNICK · The ill-fated Linda’s Chief was very dominant at two and early on at three. At three he defeated Ancient Title (who in his career would win 18 stakes races) in back to back stakes at Santa Anita, the San Jacinto and San Felipe as the odds on favorite. Then he ran into a buzz-saw named Sham and finished a well beaten second to that one in the SA Derby run in 1.47 flat. He rebounded with wins in the California Derby at GG and across country in the Withers at Belmont (defeating Stop the Music and Forego among others). Next up was AP where he won the Pontiac Grand Prix with a good horse named Golden Don third. Come to think of it, that 1970 crop which was three in 1973 was pretty darned good. · 1046 days ago
  • travel_vic · Oregon lumberman bought this one (TRIVIA QUESTION: THIS one was the favorite in the Sanford the ONLY time Secretariat was not the fav) not lonf after it was shown that one had little to no stamina as Baeza flew out to just hold on in the California Derby at GGF. Next out was a sprint a Hollywood. In those days the Cal Breeder's Sales Pavillion covered up a portion of the track from the crowd. Something like 8 broke and 7 came out from behind it except Linda's Chief who has broken his back! Ugly, about 2 million dollars got wings. · 1046 days ago

Linda's Chief won at two the Juvenile, Tremont and Youthful Stakes- he finished 2nd as the heavy favorite to Big Red in the Sanford Stakes.
I put in the owner and trainer as Aaron U. Jones and Charles Whittingham because those were his connections in 1974, his final year of racing and being alive. I figure the most recent information would be the most appropriate.
