Ashland Stakes (gr. I) winner Lilacs and Lace was sold to a Japanese breeder for an undisclosed amount and was sent to that country shortly after the May 6 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I), according to former majority owner Jim Covello.“(The sale price) was just too good to pass up,” said Covello, who decline...Read More
Medaglia d’Oro has produced magic twice in the last three years in America’s most celebrated race for three year old fillies. In 2009 Rachel Alexandra set the bar at an unreachable height with her 20 ¼ length victory in the Kentucky Oaks when she came within 1/5 of a second of the stakes record. In ...Read More
  • BrianZipse · Great coverage of the Oaks, Brian. The top two were the best and ran great ... I am still hoping that St. John's River got there, but Plum Pretty was a deserving winner. I wonder if any of these will wheel back for the Black-Eyed Susan? · 1158 days ago ·
  • KyOaksRunner · Thanks Brian! I haven't heard anything about the KY Oaks runners making the Black-Eyed Susan yet but I know Wyomia is heading there which is great! · 1155 days ago ·
Plum Pretty sat a comfortable stalking trip en route to a good looking score in Friday's Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs. Read More

  • gardenesque1 · Kathmanblu might be better on turf. Nice efforts by Plum Pretty and St. John's River. · 1160 days ago ·
  • CommaToTheTop · Well, I was really hoping Kathmanblu wil come first. But we have it clear Medaglia d'Oro is a good sire, Rachel Alexandra and now Plum Pretty ;) · 1160 days ago ·
24 hours from racing’s biggest day, I find myself needing to take a breath and put my Derby thoughts on hold for just a little … for today is fillies’ day, and they run for the lilies. The female version of the Kentucky Derby is of huge importance in its own right, and personally, it is one of my fa...Read More
Racing’s day of pink has arrived. In just a few short hours Churchill Downs will slowly begin to fill with thousands of fans ready to witness an exciting day of racing and the stands will rapidly become a sea of pink. Pink has become the color of preference at the Kentucky Oaks since it began to par...Read More
The Kentucky Derby has been littered with defections left and right during the past month it seems, this past week alone three colts were removed from consideration due to injury or physical issues of some kind. Unlike the Derby the Kentucky Oaks has remained virtually unscathed, losing just a few f...Read More

  • KyOaksRunner · Lilacs and Lace has looked really good training over the dirt but she's not one of my top picks, especially if she tries to hold the lead. · 1160 days ago ·
The 2011 Kentucky Oaks will be run in two days and the post positions have been drawn. A field of 13 will contest the 137th running but my longtime number one ranked filly R Heat Lightning is not part of the equation. R Heat Lightning came down with a problem in her right knee and will be evaluated ...Read More
Saturday and Sunday produced works from six probably Kentucky Oaks starters beginning on Saturday with Kathmanblu, Lilacs and Lace, Summer Soiree and Zazu as well as Niji’s Grand Girl who is now a possible for the Oaks according to trainer Ken McPeek. The 136th Kentucky Oaks is just one week away. In seven short days one of the nation’s leading fillies will cross the line first to seize leadership of the division, or at least that how it seems it should work out on paper. In the real world who knows what could happen. Long shots have been having ...Read More
  • zatt · Brian, like you, I am becoming more intrigued with St. John's River all the time. What do you think, can she pull off a shocker??? · 1167 days ago ·
  • KyOaksRunner · It certainly looks like she'll have the best shot of the long-shots to take down the favorites but she's not my win pick as of now. I loved how she was flying in the Fair Grounds Oaks, a swift and sustained drive....kind of the like the female version of Nehro maybe? :) · 1165 days ago ·
R Heat Lightning completed her Kentucky Oaks preparations on Saturday with a good looking four furlong breeze under the Twin Spires.   The likely Oaks favorite completed her morning move in :48.20, which was 7th best of 60 works at the distance. Saturday's breeze was her second drill at Church...Read More

Exactly ten days until the May 6th Kentucky Oaks and now we have a finalized number of fillies who are eyeing the prized contest. Sixteen talented three-year-old fillies have been listed as possibly contenders for the biggest sophomore filly race of the year and only two would be running without gra...Read More

  • DeadHeat · Royal Delta could be one to watch, coming into her third off a layoff -that is almost always a good play.- R Heat is my top, she has just matured sooo much physically and mentally. · 1169 days ago ·
  • KyOaksRunner · Certainly can't argue against choosing R Heat Lighting, she's done nothing wrong so far and is looking very strong in her works! I'm kind of intrigued with Royal Delta as well, if she makes the field she could be an interesting pick for the exotics. · 1169 days ago ·
Has anyone paid attention to her?
The Wood Memorial may have been the most shocking upset of the season but Lilacs and Lace did her best to steal the spotlight this weekend with a 48-1 upset in the Ashland Stakes (gr.1) at Keeneland on Saturday. • KyOaksRunner · There was some guy at Aqueduct in the crowd on Wood day that had the trifecta (or exacta maybe) in the Ashland and was whooping up a storm...nice payday! :) · 1184 days ago ·

The performance of the week was turned in by Joyful Victory. The sharp Larry Jones trainee followed up a romping Honeybee tally with a Fantasy walk in the park on April 10. She only received an 83 BSF but looked great doing it once again. Highly regarded Azeri filly Arienza could not match strides w...Read More

  • LDP19 · Kath does not impress me on dirt/syns as much as she does turf. Though most versitile turf runners, ie. Einstein tend to transfer well to CD dirt couse well. I have no idea what happened to Dreams. Maybe she is a CD lover??? I know she won at Keenleland, but that was a maiden and not a grade one. If she goes to the Oaks she'll be, IMO a bit of a wild card. Will she return to her dominating form that she showed over that track or will she not be able to step up again. R Heat has a big performance over the track, only Awesome Feather -unbeaten in 6- wore her down. She can lead or close -Spinaway.- and she has been the most dominant up to this point. Joyful Victory has Larry Jones which scares me because that man can tain like no other. Hard Spun and Proud Spell are proof of that. · 1186 days ago ·

Lightly-regarded Lilacs and Lace shocked many in the crowd of 23,155 racing fans who turned out to watch the $400,000 Central Bank Ashland Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland April 9. The 48-1 longshot defeated Wyomia by a length while favored Kathmanblu finished third at the Central Kentucky track.Accordin...Read More
