Life Is Sweet, winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) and stablemate of undefeated champion Zenyatta, was retired on Saturday after she developed stomach cramps following a workout at Hollywood Park, the Daily Racing Form reports.Read More
  • Medlocke · Really ironic. That's how the "Sport of King's" plays out sometimes. After John Shirreffs saddle's both the 2009 Breeders Cup Ladies Classic champion in Life is Sweet, and the Breeders Cup Classic champion in Zenyatta, everyone is lead to believe that Zenyatta will be retired, and Life is Sweet will, at that point, become the #1 filly/mare, if not horse period, in John Shirreffs racing stable. Now, on the day that Zenyatta is set to return to the track, Life is Sweet is set for retirement. IMO, Life is Sweet was a very high quality filly that was more than capable of holding her own, and showed that, against Zenyatta, and the best of the best fillies in racing by winning the 2009 Breeders Cup Ladies Classic. Also, ran a great 3rd against the colt's in the 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup. It really is another, not only quality filly, but quality horse lost to the track. Your racing ability will be sorely missed. All the best to Life is Sweet in retirement. May her breeding successes go on to equal her racing successes. · 1 days ago
  • luvzenyatta · WOW, I just got home to hear Zenyatta wins #15!, Zardana shocks Rachel, and Life is Sweet is retired. I'm completely overwhelmed :) · 17 hours ago
She was retired today following stomach cramps after a workout. She will be bred to Smart Strike.

Even in the mornings, Life Is Sweet can be overshadowed by her undefeated stablemate Zenyatta. Life Is Sweet, the winner of the Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic at Santa Anita last November, worked six furlongs in 1:12.60 at Hollywood Park on Friday. It was the fastest workout of the morning at the dist...Read More

  • Rossington · Because there's likely to be just too many "big guns" in the 2010 Dubai World Cup, I'd say Life is Sweet has a very slim chance of winning the race. But, It would not at all surprise me, especially given the track surface, to see her hit the board in the race. Most of the racing experts gave her little chance to hit the board in the 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup against the colts, but she managed a from last to third dash to hit the board in that race. Granted, the Dubai World Cup is likely to be a much tougher field than was the Hollywood Gold Cup. But Life is Sweet has also improved her racing skills a great deal since her run in the Hollywood Gold Cup. If Vision D'Etat races in the Dubai World Cup instead of the Dubai Duty Free, as he's listed as a potential starter for both races, I'd give him an ever so slight edge to win the Cup over Gio Ponti. With Life is Sweet possibly getting up for a show if she gives a top notch effort. Vision D'Etat rarely loses big Grade or Group 1 races anywhere he goes in the world. And if he doesn't win, he's almost never off of the board. But with a run like he had in the Breeders Cup Classic, and a run like she had in the Breeders Cup Ladies Classic, I could see Gio Ponti and Life is Sweet being strong competition for Vision D'Etat. • cigar · The third in the Gold Cup was much stronger than it seems given the completely lack of pace... the top two virtually went one-two all the way around. She made up the most ground out of anyone. · 11 days ago
With her 2010 debut two weeks away, Zenyatta continues to impress jockey Mike Smith in her buildup to a highly anticipated spring campaign. Friday at Hollywood Park, Zenyatta breezed six furlongs in 1:13.20 as she nears a scheduled start in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap at Santa ...Read More
  • Medlocke · Enough with the breezing times, and 6 furlong drills. Let's get to some racing already. I just had a gentleman on YouTube e-mail me and tell me that not only will Rachel Alexandra beat Zenyatta, that she will likely be in hand across the wire in doing so. His comment was that other than the B.C. Classic, Zenyatta had never faced any real competition. If competition is the question here, other than Summer Bird, who has Rachel Alexandra beaten that is so much tougher than the horses that Zenyatta has beaten? Someone please tell me, because I truly don't know who they are. Every time I read a post concerning Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra, inevitably, without failure, there's always someone that comments on how weak Zenyatta's competition has been. But there's never any follow up on all the alleged "great horses" names that Rachel Alexandra has beaten. I think it would be fair to say that Rachel Alexandra has raced colts more times successfully, but Zenyatta has beaten better colt's singularly. And in regard to other fillies, they've both raced fillies who were extremely over matched. As for the comment of Rachel Alexandra being in hand across the wire, doubtful. There's no doubt that Rachel Alexandra can, and may beat Zenyatta. But I don't see her drawing away from the best deep closer in racing by enough lengths to be "in hand" across the wire. • Rossington · Zenyatta breezed 6 furlongs at Hollywood Park in 1:13.20. Rachel Alexandra just breezed 6 furlongs over a fast main track at Louisiana Downs in 1:14.00 flat. For anyone trying to handicap the upcoming Apple Blossom, make of those work's what you will. · 13 days ago

  • Medlocke · Life is Sweet is really a filly that has started to come into her own, racing in the shadow of Zenyatta for most of the year, she really proved her metal in the Ladies Classic and I thought did quite well to get up for 3rd rallying from far off the pace in the Hollywood Gold Cup earlier in the year. If she stay's in training, this is a filly that I feel we'll be hearing more from in 2010. · 104 days ago
ZENYATTA (Street Cry [Ire]) climaxed one of the most brilliant careers in racing history with a thrilling victory in Saturday's Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), becoming the first female to win the coveted race and extending her unbeaten streak to 14. The effort to overcome her m...Read More
  • Rossington · John Shirreffs must really be on cloud nine after the weekend he just had in the Breeders Cup. Zenyatta's run really needs no explanation, it speak's for itself. Life is Sweet, however, ran like a filly with a world of talent and look's like a filly that may even have better races ahead of her should she decide to stay in training for next year. Garrett Gomez really rode a masterful race on Life is Sweet. I kind of felt going into the Ladies Classic when she was sent off with morning line odds of 8-1 that she may be the one in the race that was being overlooked. Much like I felt Gio Ponti was in the Classic. Great job by Shirreffs and congrats to the connection's of Life is Sweet and Zenyatta. Great performances from both fillies. · 125 days ago
