  • Mike in SB · By the way there is an interesting Steven Crist blog on the Racing Form site about how the top 3 year old horses should be facing older horse at this time of the year instead of running in restricted races like the Penn Derby, Cotillion, Indiana Derby etc. He makes a good point in my opinion. All the slot funded rich races for 3 year olds in the fall have contributed to the decline of many of the old traditional races in New York. It is great that the two top 3 year olds are running in the Gold Cup and Princess of Sylmar is in the Beldame. · 202 days ago ·
Orb may not be the immortal everyone thought him to be, but one loss at the hands of a bad post takes nothing away from him. He can still be great.Read More

  • matthewmartini · I'm remember thinking before the race that only two horses had won the Preakness since 1960 from the #1 post. If one is superstitious (and I'm not), one could think that Orb would be in trouble. Despite the post, I felt that if Rosario could get him outside by the second turn that he was going to win. He didn't, he looked bothered on the inside, and tired on top of it. Even if he had been able to get on the outside, I still think that he would not have run down Oxbow. The pace was too slow and Orb's big run in the Derby led to a bounce. And the post didn't help. Itsmylucky day ran better than I had anticipated. · 330 days ago ·

  • dani.pugh · Funny Cide had the lead turning for home in the Wood, had it for a short time in the stretch before Empire Maker passed him. It was not by daylight, but under a hand ride. So, if we are being picky, it happened exactly 10 years ago. · 349 days ago ·

  • Mary Z. · Thanks, Sysonby. I love horse racing now, and I know there are problems. I have a gap of lost time from 1980-1998, and it seems that those years are when changes in stakes distances, number of starts, medications allowed occurred. · 392 days ago ·

Many conclusions can be drawn from Saturday, some justified and others based purely on bias. A well-drawn conclusion would be that a new and dangerous face has emerged on the road to the Kentucky Derby. Another would be we may have witnessed the birth of a great American female sprinter. • Mike in SB · I saw where both Shanghai Bobby and Itsmyluckyday are going to wait for the Florida Derby. It will be a good rematch but probably a much better field. Since both will need to hit the board to be sure of a place in the Derby lineup, it seems very possible one of them will not have enough points to make the Kentucky Derby field. · 444 days ago ·
  • DeadHeat · Bobby could get third and probably still have enough points. Itsmyluckyday would need to win or place, though. I do not mind either staying with their original plan, though I would like to see Bobby run back in the FOY w/o blinkers. I think that may help with his loafing on the lead, once he establishes a clear one. He is a horse that responds well to competition, with blinkers he cannot see the horse if they are slightly behind him nor even if they are abreast him. Take the blinkers off and he will be able to see them very clearly. · 444 days ago ·
It was a sweltering August evening in suburban St. Louis, and I can still remember the sweat dripping from my forehead, momentarily blurring my vision from the copper chestnut beauty that was just a few feet away from me. • goblin · Lovely piece! After Itsmyluckyday's win yesterday, I thought of Lawyer Ron's beauty and especially his races as an older horse; from the beginning he had a singular vitality. When he died so suddenly, Steve Haskin of BH wrote a tribute to him that began with the words, "Lawyer Ron loved to run." I think I see that trait in Itsmyluckyday as well. If you haven't read the BH article, here it is. http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/horse-racing-steve-haskin/archive/2009/07/20/lawyer-ron-beyond-a-reasonable-doubt.aspx · 445 days ago ·

The wet conditions did not put a damper on the 2-YO stakes action at Calder Race Course even as Tropical Storm Issac made its way toward Florida. • DeadHeat · And many of you need one in reality. What i said is completely true. If you want to be technical, over 90 of horses in this sport are not clean, but are because of what is made legal. Winstrol was at the time, so even it showed up in Curlin's blood, it would have been fine. I also provided you with facts above that say that that particular drug does not produce much weight gain or muscle gain, unlike typical steroids. That particular drug is actually used to treat conditions that cause swelling, and it reduces it. Swelling typically comes from when blood flows highly to one area of the body causing it to swell and become stiff and painful. If it reduces swelling then this drug would be an equivalent to aprin or motrin to humans. · 899 days ago ·

  • gocashking · I don't buy that a horse lost because it "couldn't see" its opponent. It's a convenient excuse similar to the dreaded "cuppy track" in my opinion. I see thousands of races every year where horses CAN see there opponent going by and it doesn't make the slightest bit of difference. · 948 days ago ·
  • ohio adversary · Although probably irrelevant to the debate, I'd like to add that horses are unable to see objects that are directly in front of their faces--a "blind spot" due to the eyes being positioned so far apart. Just a little equine trivia! · 947 days ago ·
