Trainer Roger Varian is now saying Kingston Hill's much anticipated rematch with Australia in Saturday's G1 Irish Derby is very much in doubt due to concerns over the fast ground at the Curragh. 5mm of rain fell on the track overnight, but the ground still remains rated as good to firm, and Varian said he'd have to see more rain fall before Kingston Hill would be a go in the race. If he misses the Irish Derby I'd say it's very likely we'll see him at Sandown on July 5th for the G1 Coral-Eclipse instead. But should Varian get the required rain for Kingston Hill to start the Irish Derby, then it's just as likely that Aidan O'Brien will scratch Australia with having already said Australia would only run in the Irish Derby if the ground was good to firm.
  • Euro Trash · The ground preference game is getting out of control in my opinion. If one or the other pulls out the race becomes rather irrelevant in my opinion. They appear to tower over the others. · 297 days ago
  • Euro Trash · Apologies about the two "in my opinions". I am certain one would have been sufficient · 297 days ago
Trainer Roger Varian has reversed field and now decided that Kingston Hill will skip Thursday's G2 Dante Stakes over 2100 meters at York and instead go straight to Epsom next month for the G1 Epsom Derby. Kingston Hill had been 1 of 12 entered for the Dante, generally considered one of the more informative trials for the Epsom Derby, but trainer Roger Varian told the racing media that he's decided it's not necessary for Kingston Hill to have another run ahead of his trip to Epsom Downs on June 7th. Kingston Hill suffered his only loss to date back on May 3rd when he finished 8th in the G1 English 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
As very talented as Australia is for Coolmore, Kingston Hill is one I really really like for the Guineas. I liked his sire, but his sire was unlucky to be a 3 year old the same year as the Great Sea The Stars.
Kingston Hill remains unbeaten and bolts up to win the G1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster by a pretty emphatic 4-1/2 lengths.

  • ILuvTurfRacing · Mastercraftsman himself was primarly a miler during the time he was actively racing, though he did see out 10f quite well in the Irish Champion Stakes and 10-1/2f well in the Juddmonte International & Diamond Stakes, but this colt has the look of a horse that will thrive beyond a mile next season to me. 10f for sure and maybe 12f? · 541 days ago
