Who Was Kincsem?
When people answer the question of who was the best racehorse of all time, most people would debate between Man O' War and Secretariat. But perhaps there was a FILLY better than them both.

I honestly think that this mare was the greatest racehorse ever. In the whole world. In all of history. A filly, racing mainly against males, retiring undefeated in 54 races. No one will ever duplicate that.

She was a great horse, and not even close to being the greatest ever. How many horses were there in existence back then? 100? 500? Who knows? The pool of horses was probably quite small, so it's hard to gauge her properly because of the lack of horses and runners way back then. She didn't race in the USA either, so why even include her?

didn't race in the US? She ran at what have been and ARE some of the greatest venues in the world and waxed all comers. She did have a single dead heat but beat that rival in a run off. The US is not or nor has it ever been the epicenter of racing.

I agree with travel_vic. A horse does not have to run in the US to be great. Also, just because there were less horses running doesn't mean that they were worse. The gene pool was purer and stronger then. We would have to go back and actually calculate the percentage of top class horses per foal population to get an accurate reading of the strength of competition. She ran in the best races all over Europe and was never beaten. I feel she is a true legend and certainly one of the greatest ever, jmho.

Hello Everybody! I agree with All of You who consider Kincsem the No,1 racehorse of all time. - I was born in Hungary and read a fantastic book about her when I was ~8-9 years old. After her untimely death, Kincsem's skeleton, which is exhibited (I do not know whether in Kisber or in Busapest), was analysed mostly because when she was running, her abdomen was almost reaching the ground. No one had ever seen anything like this before. As expected, her skeleton was quite unusual. If I remeber correctly, her joints were much-much more flexible than those of "normal" horses. I wish I remembered more! I will access the book and will tell Those of You, who are interested, more about Kincsem. Bye for now, anna

@morethanready111: That was a joke, right? RIGHT? There were far more than 500 horses back then. Not as many as today, of course, but that does not mean they were of inferior quality either. If anything they could of been far better quality than horses we see today for all we know. And not having raced in the US? I'm sorry, but racing in the US does NOT make a horse great. The US is not some all great golden land. I really, really hope you were kidding with that egotistical comment.

Why is Kincesm not mentioned as one of the greats? Same reason as Eclipse, Matchem, Herod, Australian, St. Simon, and such - they cannot be compared to the modern Thoroughbred. Even comparing American Eclipse or Lexington or Sir Charles is a huge stretch to Man O' War let alone Secretariat and dare I mention Cigar?

@TBDF. Nice article! I, too, think that people who enjoy the sport should research her, I guarentee all will enjoy researching her. I do like your article, just one speck. When people think "Who was the best ever?" Most don't think I'll Have Another or Barbaro, lol. My rankings would go: 1. Secretariat 2. Kelso 3. Man o' War 4. Dr. Fager 5. Citation 6. Forego 7. Affirmed 8. Spectacular Bid 9. Seattle Slew 10. Damacus. JMO.

Rafi, I agree 100%. So hard to compare horses running in the same year, let along the 1970s, the 1920s are pure speculation and the 1880's... it's nuts! American Eclipse and Sir Charles ran multiple times in HEATS as used to be normal. Hindoo raced around this time, right?

We can't really compare Bernardini to Barbaro. How are we suppose to compare Kincsem to Secretariat? Or against other top mares, such as Gallorette, Ruffian, Princess Rooney, Personal Ensign, or Zenyatta? Impossible to compare.

I could list these same situations over and over. We can't truly compare Eskendreya to Mine That Bird, can we? It is hard to compare horses in the same year. It is virtually impossible to compare horses who ran 50 years apart, such as MOW and Sec. How the hell can we compare a 1880's mare to a 1970's mare? Or a modern day mare?

Lasix/Salix(same thing, different names, no or very rare 12f or further stamina influences, and this one to which I've actually received rebuttals, I think just because he would argue anything, the entering of utter crap in the Derby, just because some owner wanted to say they had a Derby horse, not one they think of as a Derby winner and there is a huge difference there. Now, the argument goes, well, what about so and so long shot that won? No, I'm talking about the long shots that lose, quite badly, but not before causing traffic. Those are a few of my reasons why there has been a TC "drought".

And then I get told that nothing else should change about the Derby, like the 20 horse field. Arguer said that makes it challenging. Really? The 10f isn't challenging. Okay, leave the 20 spots open, but let class, and I mean of the connections, not just the horses, be the thing that limits the field. Argue away. I never said lights at the Derby are okay or shortening it, or changing the Tc schedule. Just let class be the restriction at the entry box. Do you honestly believe that you have a Derby winner? No? Enjoy the parties, enjoy the race. Let the real contenders run. Of course others want the crap to raise the odds on the good ones.

Based on what we know of Kincsem, she was the best of her time, and arguably one of the best horses to ever step foot on the track. Undefeated with 54 races, against both male and female. My grandfather use to say, that for a horse to truly be great, they must produce those who are great. Kincsem's offspring where very successful, as were her grand-offspring

Kincsem was not only a legendary racehorse that should be in the top 10 if not number 1, she was a successful broodmare and a hugely integral part of breeding programs.
