What the Horse Racing Nation is saying about Kensei...

In a brilliant display of speed and talent, Quality Road staked his claim as the top horse in the country as he rocketed to a 1 ½-length victory over Musket Man Monday afternoon in the 117th running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park. Read More

  • cugel the clever · WRITING YOUR OPINION IN CAPITAL LETTERS DOES NOT MAKE IT A FACT. Naming the "Best Horse" always has been, and always will be, an OPINION, not a FACT. In my opinion, beating the best males in the world three times (instead of once), setting multiple track and stakes records (instead of none) and beating horses at 8 different tracks is a more worthy record than 16 in a row against Grade III competition. · 88 days ago

In his first two starts as a 4-year-old, Quality Road quickly established himself as a powerhouse in the older male division, cruising to an easy win in the Grade 3 Hal’s Hope at Gulfstream Park and coming back to crush the competition by nearly 13 lengths in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap.Read More

Monday’s 118th running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Metropolitan Handicap is shaping up to be a stellar renewal, with Grade 1 Carter winner Warrior’s Reward, 2009 Dwyer and Jim Dandy winner Kensei, Gulfstream Park Handicap victor You and I Forever, and the 1-4 finishers in the Westchester – Le Grand Cru...Read More
Champion Informed Decision and multiple Grade 1 winner Court Vision are two of many stars among the entrants for five graded stakes on the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) undercard on Saturday at Churchill Downs.Read More
  • medlocke · Informed Decision looked to me like a mare that had a little bit of lay-off rust in losing her first start of 2010 at Keenland in the Vinery Madison Stakes. Informed Decision had been undefeated over synthetic surfaces until her recent 3rd place finish. But she's one of those rare one's that can perform equally well over a conventional dirt surface as well. She won the 09' Human Distaff in the slop at Churchill Downs, if you'll remember. A lot of horses are slow starters after a lay-off. Gio Ponti springs to mind, losing his first start of 2010 at Tampa Bay Downs to Karelian. But came back in his second start to run an amazing Dubai World Cup, finishing 4th, but having to go extremely wide to get that. So it was a very quality run for him. I expect Informed Decision to bounce back with a win on Derby day. IMO. · 132 days ago
By this time next week, we'll know who's in the gate for the 136th Kentucky Derby presented by Taco Smell. Some big questions will be answered today as to whether certain horses in the bottom portion of the Top 20 in graded stakes will qualify to run for the roses...Read More
Anstu Stables Inc.’s South Florida-based Blues Street raided Fair Grounds in New Orleans for the second time this year with a steady rally down the Stall-Wilson turf course to win Saturday’s 18th running of the Grade II, $300,000 Mervin Muniz Handicap by 1 ¾ lengths over longshot Pick Six.   Bl...Read More
Spot-on tidbit from New Orleans Times-Picayune turf writer Bob Fortus this week: Namely, how can the Duncan Kenner, Fair Grounds' top sprint race, not be graded? The race I just watched was every bit a graded stakes - I have no doubt of that. Cash Refund was the pick here only because he...Read More
Saturday’s $750,000 Louisiana Derby as the richest race in Fair Grounds history, the 85th running of the tradition-rich Grade II New Orleans Handicap for older horses and the 17th renewal of the Grade II Mervin Muniz Memorial Handicap for older horses on the Stall-Wilson turf course serve as the to...Read More

THE INTRIGUE - The 140th running of the Travers didn’t feature Rachel Alexandra, who most believed at the time was the best 3YO of either sex, but the winners of the Belmont, Florida Derby, Lane’s End, Jim Dandy, Dwyer, Peter Pan, and Barbaro made up the field of seven.Read More

Godolphin Racing’s highly-touted 3-year-old Girolamo overwhelmed Kensei after a brief stretch duel and scored the $150,000 Jerome Handicap (gr. II) by 1 1/4 lengths Oct. 11 at Belmont Park in his first stakes appearance of the season. Read More
  • Medlocke · This was a race I really thought there was no way that Kensei could lose. But when he went to the gas tank in the stretch, all empty. Girolamo easily ran by him and Kensei didn't even have enough left to hold off Burley's Gold for second. I had seen Kensei run a few times this year and he's a big colt that usually runs big. But not this day. · 331 days ago

Thirty-two nominations are pretty good for a race that, up until six weeks ago, wasn't even on the schedule. Thistledown officials Sept. 23 said that's the number of nominees for the grade II Ohio Derby Oct. 3. The purse is $150,000, down from $300,000 last year.Read More
