After being one of the stars of the Dubai Carnival on the tapeta surface, Kassiano wins his British and seasonal debut back on turf for the first time since September, 2012, defeating John Gosden's Trade Commissioner and Richard Hannon's Viewpoint in a 10f conditions stakes on Newmarket's July Course.

As mentioned in my post under Animal Kingdom, horses breaking from post 11 or higher in this meet are 1 for 69. Kassiano, yet again, will break outside at post #13. I really like him in this spot, he's my second choice behind Hunter's Light. Once I handicap it I'll see who I will bet. I think he could overcome the post.
If Kassiano is able to overcome breaking from the widest gate, PP #14, in the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 3 on Saturday, I truly do think he has a very legit chance of shocking this field. There's no horse at Meydan right now running as well on tapeta as Kassiano has been. He finished 2nd in his carnival debut and has since reeled off 3 straight wins on tapeta, 2 of 3 at 11f, so the distance isn't an issue. He's got the help of a very talented & capable jockey to guide him through the race in William Buick, and Twice Over proved in 2011 it's not entirely impossible to win the race from a wide PP draw, as he won breaking from PP #13 of 14. Kassiano's gonna go off at a really nice price too with horses like Monterosso, Hunter's Light, Little Mike, & Saint Baudolino in the field.
  • AmbitiousD · Any word if he is being pointed to the Dubai World Cup? If he shows up on Saturday he should be able to compete with the level of competition that will run in 4 weeks. · 1153 days ago
  • ILuvTurfRacing · @AmbitiousD, I think whether or not Kassiano gets pointed at the Dubai World Cup depends a great deal on how well he does or doesn't run in the AMC Rd. 3 on Saturday? Were he to win or even make the frame against these types of horses coming out of the #14 gate on Saturday then my hunch is you'll see him right back in the Godolphin blue as one of their DWC entries on world cup night. · 1153 days ago
In my opinion, this horse has been the brightest star of the Carnival so far, from anyone's stable. He bolted up to win today's race by 6-1/2 lengths, giving him his third win in a row on tapeta after finishing 2nd only 1-1/2 lengths behind stablemate Royal Empire in his carnival debut. The way Kassiano has performed so far at Meydan is eerily similar to the way Capponi exploded onto the world stage on the surface at the 2012 Carnival. Capponi also started out winning handicaps on tapeta early on at Meydan and the next thing anyone knew he was winning the G1 Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 3 and finishing 2nd in the G1 Dubai World Cup. After today's impressive romp I can't help but wonder if a step up group level might not be in Kassiano's near future? His win today runs his career record to an impressive 9-7-1-1, which also includes races earlier in his career on turf in France.
This horse is getting more progressive each and every time he steps onto a racetrack. He's already amassed an outstanding career record on turf & synthetics. Kassiano has 2 wins and 1-3rd in 3 career starts on turf, and the only loss of his career in 5 lifetime starts on a synthetic surface counting today's win was that narrow loss to Royal Empire in his Carnival debut over 9-1/2f, but he just reversed that form today over 11f. Not really sure what sort of long range plans for the Carnival that Godolphin have for Kassiano, but there's no question he's one of the stables fastest improving horses they have at Meydan right now.
