What the Nation is saying about Joshua Tree...

When the very best of thoroughbreds compete over long distances of dirt or grass for Grade 1 titles, the spectacle is sure worth watching. On Sunday, a field of 11 will go to post in the 75th running of the Grade 1 $1.5 million Pattison Canadian International, a 1 1/2 mile trip around Woodbine's E.P...Read More

If history has taught us anything in the Hong Kong Vase, it’s that the 1 ½ mile turf affair is no easy task for a three-year-old to win. • MarcelloMarocco · The Japan Cup is FAR more prestigeous to the Euro's and Dubai based horses then the BC no doubt. Winning the Japan Cup is probably right up there with The ARC, and King George. If Siyouma goes to the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf she will whip that field badly. Even my favorite Girl Marketing Mix. · 220 days ago ·

I was rail side for the Races at Woodbine yesterday, and let me tell you that Siyouma was absolutely stunning. She beat that solid field so easily, and she was not even blowing at the end. This is one VERY VERY good filly. As for Joshua Tree ...he got the PERFECT ride from Frankie, and the fractions were dreadfully slow, and it killed off any chance for horses like Reliable man, Wigmore Hall who like to run into a faster pace. Absolutely PERFECT from Frankie, and Joshua Tree. Got to FINALLY see the famous Dettori Dismount!
  • MarcelloMarocco · Oh and When they were loading in the gate, Imperial Monarch had a 7 horse entouage lead him to the gate....lol. He had the royal treatment the second he stepped on the course. · 220 days ago ·

If the Breeders Cup moves to a track like Woodbine or other that is similar to European grass racing, you will see more Europeans come here. When you alternate between Churchill and Santa Anita, you are going to get less and less Euros. Japan is the place to be outside of Europe in my opinion. Given their breeding developments and the top notch horses they are producing, they will be soon at the pinnacle of racing.

  • ILuvTurfRacing · Joshua Tree quite obviously loves the turf course at Woodbine. 2 wins and a 2nd in the past 3 running's of the Canadian International shows that. His form coming in was rock solid as well, having scored a win, a 2nd, and a 3rd at G2 level in 3 races prior to coming to Woodbine. He was always going to be at least one of the top 2 or 3 horses to beat in this race. With that being said, Dandino in 2nd was the real eye catcher of the race to me. He forced to go very wide through the stretch, but Jim Crowley had him absolutely motoring, cutting back Joshua Tree's lead with every stride. So much so that if the race had been another 10 yards, if even that, Jim Crowley would've likely stolen Frankie Dettori's thunder on the day, IMO. I think Imperial Monarch and Reliable Man would've both been seen to much better effect in the race if there had bin a bit more cut in the ground on the day. They're both better when the turf is relatively soft as apposed to being good to firm. · 221 days ago ·

What can you say!! Joshua Tree loves the course at Woodbine and he loves this race. That's 2 wins and 1-2nd in 3 running's of the Canadian International for him, and he got a great ride from Mr.Clutch, Frankie Dettori, too. A mighty run from Dandino who closed like a shot on the outside for 2nd, too. Imperial Monarch looked well positioned enough by Ryan Moore and looked to have every chance. Just not good enough on the day. I think a bit more cut in the ground would've helped Imperial Monarch and Reliable Man's chances a good deal moor in this race, IMO.

Marco Botti lost his Dubai World Cup horse from the past 2 seasons when Gitano Hernando was transferred out of his barn after the 2011 Dubai World Cup to new owners. But he's got a one to replace the loss of GH that just recently transferred to his barn in Planteur, and Botti has already said he intends to make Planteur his 2012 Dubai World Cup horse. I don't think it will happen, but I wouldn't mind seeing him bring Excelebration over in March and let him stretch out from a mile to 9f for a crack at the Duty Free. I think another furlong would suite Excelebration real well, and I think he'd be a beast in the Duty Free. It's been having a good 12f turf horse for the Sheema Classic in the past 2 years that Botti's been lacking for, and IMO, he certainly has one in his barn since Joshua Tree left Qatar and returned to racing in Europe this season. Joshua Tree ran a strong race for 2nd behind Sara Lynx in the G1 Canadian International this year, and also had a respectable 3rd place finish in the G1 Preis Von Baden in a race that Danedream was just much the best. Which we now understand how she was after seeing her blitz this year's Arc field. After he won the 2010 Canadian International, I thought Joshua Tree should've gotten to race in last year's Sheema Classic, and I still believe he'd be a very viable contender if Marco Botti would let him run in this year's renewal.

  • medlocke · I often wondered why Joshua Tree wasn't sent over for the 2010 BC Turf when he was still racing for Coolmore, after he won the 2010 G1 Canadian International Stakes? Joshua Tree very likely could've won last year's BC Turf standing on his head it was such a weak field. He'll face a much tougher and field at Churchill Downs this year than he would've a year ago. But he looked to be coming back into solid form again with his 2nd place run behind Sara Lynx in Sunday's G1 Canadian International Stakes. I think he'll make for a fine addition to this year's BC Turf field. JMO. · 583 days ago ·

Talk about a horse that going to be hitting to Dubai with a head of steam!! Joshua Tree is certainly that horse. I still can't believe that Ballydoyle let this colt go? Given how lightly raced he was, and how he kept improving with every race, and still has a huge potential for even more improvement. Joshua Tree ran outstanding races in the UK in both the G2 Great Voltigeur Stakes at York, and the G1 St. Leger at Doncaster. Then he went to Woodbine and beat another colt that's really running well in Redwood in the G1 Canadian International Stakes. Next was the Japan Cup, where Joshua Tree didn't really run that well. But it was a big field with a lot of traffic issues to overcome. What I would consider a throughout race. After the Japan Cup, Joshua Tree was sold from Ballydoyle where he shipped to Qatar. He ran 4th in the G1 Heir Apparent Trophy. Then in his second Qatar start yesterday, he won the biggest race in the country. The G1 Qatar International Invitational Cup under an impressive run. Joshua Tree took the field the 1-1/2 from pillar to post. If Snow Fairy and Buena Vista were going to be entered in this year's Sheema Classic, it would be hard for me to split the two, and I'd likely have them as co-favorites in the race. But given that both are likely to go to the Dubai World Cup instead of the Sheema Classic this year, I think that certainly makes Joshua Tree one of the betting favorites for the race. IMO, rivaled only by Godolphin's Mastery. Off of the back of his extremely impressive win in the G1 Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin back in December. JMO.
  • footlick · Thanks Medlocke. I enjoy your reporting for the UAE races. I've always liked Joshua Tree. Hope he keeps improving! I am relishing Snow Fairy and Buena Vista running in the DWC. Can't wait. Hope they both make it. · 819 days ago ·
