What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

With Winslow Homer off the Kentucky Derby trail, which new 3-year-old has entered the top twelve? 1. Buddy's Saint - Some are knocking his big Beyer Speed Figure drop from the Nashua to the Remsen, but he was coming back in only three weeks after popping a 101 Beyer and figured to regress. Runner-up...Read More
It's that time of year again. Turf writers, handicappers and bloggers get an extra early start on predicting who will be in the final field of 20 on that first Saturday in May. Is it premature? No doubt. Is the field set in any way? Not on your life. But ...Read More
A quiet week at Down and Derby Central with no changes among my Top 20. Things will change next week with considerable action, highlighted by the first major prep in California, the Robert B. Lewis Stakes. Expected entrants include American Lion, Tiz Chrome, Hawaiian Springs, Dave In Dixie, and Cara...Read More
A few years back when interviewing Tony Dutrow, he told me he was in the racing business to make money and that every horse was for sale. Now that he has WINSLOW HOMER on the Derby trail for julep-yearning owner Rick Porter, it will be interesting to see how his philosophy changes now with a sip of ...Read More
Fox Hill Farms’ Winslow Homer made an auspicious stakes debut Saturday at Gulfstream Park as he pulled away from Robert LaPenta’s 8-to-5 favorite Jackson Bend in the deep stretch to score a three-quarter length victory in the $150,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G3) as both talented 3-year-olds set off on a p...Read More
  • Rossington · Speaking of the Kentucky Derby, has anyone out there heard any news at all about some of the 09' Derby runners and contenders that were injured early in the year? I know that Pioneer of the Nile, Papa Clem, and Dunkirk have all been retired. But what about Musketman, The Pamplemousse(who I know didn't run in the Derby), or I Want Revenge? I saw that Friesan Fire and General Quarters have both returned to action racing in the Louisiana Handicap recently. Just wondering if anyone knew when we might expect the return of some of the afore mentioned? · 11 days ago
Winslow Homer made his stakes debut in the Holy Bull with only three starts to his credit, but he was well-regarded despite the limited credentials, leaving the starting gate as the 7-2 co-second choice in the wagering. The Tony Dutrow-trained colt received a 106 BRIS Speed in his previous start, a ...Read More
In my last Derby post, I stated that a new player (Take Control) had arrived on the scene. Unfortunately, the Baffert trainee has shin problems and needs a few months to recover, so he’s off the Derby trail. Barn also has Conveyance, who had to work for his San Rafael (G3) tally on Jan 16th. He will...Read More
Two potent armies are gathering en masse on opposite ends of the country. Their objective: Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May. The generals: Bob Baffert, who is assembling a large force on the slopes of the San Gabriels, and Todd Pletcher, who is matching him horse for horse, with his main...Read More
Ran the best yesterday as he was up on the pace and 3-4 wide the whole way. He looked done at the 3/8th pole but then rallied back up on the outside and gained on Winslow Homer for second. Winslow Homer did have the perfect trip with Ramon. Maybe they should switch back to Jeffrey Sanchez?

  • mshutty · Winslow Homer was in hand most of the race...did get bottled up a bit on the far turn heading into the stretch. What was most impressive is that long, easy stride. Looks like this one will only get better with distance. The one-turn mile is just too short for him. · 15 days ago
  • cigar · They crawled home... 26+ seconds.... not sure if they're "Classic Distance" horses. · 15 days ago
Less than 100 day to go until Derby Delirium. The Derby trail officially began in earnest today with thr Lecomte at the Fair Grounds and the Holy Bull at Gulfstream Park, where no less than four of the participants appear in the top half of this week's Down and Derby Top 20...Read More
I don't think Jackson Bend is going to get beat in the Holy Bull. If there's a price play in here, it might be Litigation Risk, who is the best speed and could get to the lead on a decent pace. I might try the 9-3 exacta.
Ruby: your right off his last race the trouble he had and still got a 100 beyer fig. Cant see him losing at one turn mile.
  • arazi · Agree. Maybe they beat him another time, another distance. But I don't see it tomorrow either.. · 17 days ago
Robert LaPenta’s Jackson Bend, William Schettine’s Piscitelli and Dogwood Stable’s Aikenite are three of the high-profile 3-year-olds in a field of nine entered to make their highly-anticipated season debuts in Saturday’s $150,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park. The one-turn mile test is a...Read More

  • cigar · If you go back and watch Winslow Homer's first three races he shows definitive improvement both in terms of overall ability, push-button speed and ratability. I expect him to run big in the Holy Bull. · 17 days ago
  • mdracing69 · Hope you're right about Winslow Homer, because he's my pick in the Holy Bull. · 17 days ago
Disappointment and hope run in tandem on the trail. Just minutes after word broke that Azeri's baby TAKE CONTROL was injured and off the Triple Crown trail, along came Barbaro's little brother LENTENOR to pull off a "wow" performance unmatched in the maiden ranks this season. Call me crazy, but LENT...Read More
Before I jump around the nation with news and notes, congrats to Rachel Alexandra for winning Horse of the Year honors over Zenyatta. She had the better overall season and deserved the nod. It is great that Zenyatta will race again this year, and we can only hope that the two fabulous ladies hook up...Read More
The first round of 2010 preps for Kentucky Derby (G1) hopefuls are underway, with Santa Anita, Oaklawn Park, Tampa Bay Downs and Golden Gate Fields all offering races over the holiday weekend, and Gulfstream Park and Fair Grounds will get into act this Saturday with the Holy Bull S. (G3) and Lecomte...Read More
The field for Saturday’s highly-anticipated renewal of the $150,000 Holy Bull Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park continues to take shape with a field of seven to 10 3-year-olds expected. Robert LaPenta’s Jackson Bend will likely be favored in the one-turn, one-mile test. Gulfstream racing officials lis...Read More
