This year has some great potential! I would also like to add Fly Lexis Fly to the Triple Crown group. He's already proven at 10 and 12 furlongs, but we'll see how he fares against the best the US has to offer

Well written, Ashley! Great job in the 2012 roundup and nice perspective on emerging rivalries in the various divisions. I'm excited about 2012 for many of the reasons you recited. I keep hoping that the 2011 year that was a muddle will dawn into a 2012 with some real stars rising to the fore! I share your enthusiasm for On Fire Baby and Now I Know. I do worry about Eight Belles' brother, Unbridled's Way...for obvious reasons.

Chris, I felt the exact same way about MMM. I look forward to seeing him build on the foundation he established at Gulfstream. Wes, I completely overlooked Horse of the Meet. As I stated, there really was not a true standout, but if I had to choose, I would select Mucho Macho Man. Ron the Greek flattered his Sunshine Millions win with a score in the Big Cap, and MMM beat a couple of tough competitors in Jackson Bend and Tackleberry in the Gulf Cap. It sounds biased since we all know how much I like MMM, but it also makes sense if you look at it logically.

CP needs that extra furlong in order for his closing kick to be really effective, so he's definitely best at a mile. JB loves 7 furlongs, and Shack will get back to the winner's circle before too long. He'll have to fight hard for the win, though, if he continues to face JB and CP. Definitely the best race of the day!

Three of my favorite horses, Shackleford, Caleb's Possee and Jackson Bend, hate to see any of them lose, but Shackleford and Caleb's Posse might be better at a mile. It should be a great race and Shackleford at 8-1 looks pretty good.

The Tom Fool along with his Oaklawn works should have set up Caleb's Posse for the win over a dear fav of mine, Calibrachoa, that CP almost caught at 6f. Jackson Bend likes this distance, so: 2,3,1. I didn't think Shackleford will be speedy enough. If he proves me wrong, I'll just avoid the subject. lol.

Seems like Calibrachoa could have had an excuse for several of his 2011 losses when he ventured from the Aqueduct inner track, slop, bad starts, The Cigar Mile being out of his distance range, but enough excuses. Time to step up. I pretty much think Caleb's Posse is all set to take the Carter, but I love Cali. Disclaimer that 6f. might be his specialty.

Whoa, sounds like a great day! Seems like you had all avenues covered, including meeting the horses! And now you have press creds, you're official!

I love all of the photos. Shackleford does look way more massive compared to little you than he does next to WDW. LOL

Exactly how close were you to Jackson Bend, Dullahan, News Pending, and MMM?

I don't see the picture of Shackleford, anyway I am envious that you got to met (and touch) my fav!

Anna, I was in the walking ring with JB and MMM and in the winner's circle with MMM, so I was pretty close, but I obviously couldn't touch either one at the time. Shackleford, New Pending, Dullahan, Saint of Saints, Little Mike, and Little Baily got spoiled rotten by Michele and I, but mostly Shackleford because he's pretty greedy and demanding. Mary, I agree with your assessment, especially since WDW would dwarf me, too. :-)

AnnaK, I don't think the Fairgrounds are any closer than Gulfstream, but the idea has merit. That very well may just have to be the next stop for me.

Met Mile Dreamin’ - Caleb’s Posse vs. Mucho Macho Man
With Kentucky Derby fever in full flight, fans are clamoring for Union Rags – Hansen II. I’m all for that; a real honest to goodness rivalry through the Triple Crown would be great for our sport, but a couple of performances this past week have me very excited for the potential of another match-up. ...

Tough call. Caleb's Posse loves 7-8 furlongs, and MMM loves 8-9 furlongs. A flat mile could go either way.

I'll throw Shackleford in the mix and we have a great Met Mile in store. A pace setter, a stalker, and a closer, gives me shivers

Though MMM looks great, I've always been partial to Caleb's Posse!

What a trio .... here's my call, Shackleford is pure from 1 mile to 1 1/8th, CP flat out 7f to 1mile, and MMM 1mile to 1 1/4th ... at 1 mile a fresh Shacleford noses ot CP and MMM just starting to run makes them both sweat.

It's a little early to tell, but as referenced in the article, To Honor and Serve would be another to help make this a great race.

I think Mucho Macho Man might hold a slight advantage at 1 mile. He's obviously improving and I think his running style would give him an edge over Caleb's Posse's "dead-last" rallies.
