What the Horse Racing Nation is talking about...

Calvin Borel will ride Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (gr. II) runner-up Jackson Bend in the April 3 Wood Memorial (gr. I), replacing Jeremy Rose, trainer Nick Zito said March 8.   “It speaks for itself,” Zito said. “He’s Calvin Borel and he’s a tremendous rider. He has great hands and we just ...Read More
Kentucky Derby watchers everywhere have passed the point of no return.  Inside of eight weeks, it is put up or shut up time.  Connections and horses are now in full scramble mode to prove that they have what it takes to make a serious run for the roses. Yesterday we saw impressive runs...Read More
One of the things I really like about Steve Munday's Derby Dozen (editors note: I'm a participant so this is totally biased) is the use of the Roman Numeral for his bi-weekly Volumes. Now typically only Olympiads and Super Bowls are allowed to use this status, but I think it's cool that we have some...Read More
There are so many top 3-year-olds who still have questions to answer it makes it tough to come up with a list of 12 horses each week that you’re perfectly happy with.   There are always going to be horses you’d love to include who just haven’t done quite enough to warrant supplanting the more a...Read More
There are owners who go out and spend millions of dollars looking for a Kentucky Derby horse, and trainers who stockpile prospects in the hope that one of them gets there. Mike Machowsky does not have that luxury. He trains 15 horses. Not 15 3-year-olds. Fifteen horses. Yet of those 15, two - Caraco...Read More
A handful of graded events were contested on Feb 20th, and the performance of the day belonged to my new number one Derby contender…Eskendereya. The Todd Pletcher trainee came into the ‘Youth off a sharp allowance score, and the early-pressing sort went off as 3rd betting choice behind Buddy’s Saint...Read More

  • mdracing69 · Jackson Bend - Part of exacta all 8 starts. Hard knocker reminds me of '96 Preakness winner Louis Quatorze (also Zito). Dublin had a solid start to 3yo campaign. · 20 days ago
  • mdracing69 · As for Rule, I have a rule. Pletcher cannot take up more than 30% of my list...lol. · 20 days ago
“And they’re off in the 2010 Kentucky Derby, and it’s Rule going for the lead, followed closely by Super Saver, Eskendereya, and Discreetly Mine. Mission Impazible is right behind, with Interactif, Aikenite, Doubles Partner, and Connermara racing in midpack.”Read More
All of a sudden the Derby Trail just got a whole lot downer and derbier with several important preps being run yesterday. The theme of the day was Mr. Todd Pletcher, who scored with three Derby prep wins, topped by a scintilating score by Eskendereya. All of yesterday's preps...Read More
  • wickedstyle · Enjoyed the read - I was somewhat surprised to see you put Eskendereya at #2, not that I disagree after the FOY, but it still surprised me. No Vale of York? Just a Cali fluke? And also no love for Discreetly Mine? · 23 days ago
  • cigar · Eskendereya's Fountain of Youth is by the far the best performance any 3-year-old has put on the track this year. He should be #1. · 21 days ago
Cool horse... but simply not Derby material. You have to recognize, however, that he did run second and that says something. If you ever see him in person, he's a tiny, little guy... but not without talent.
FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH   Todd Pletcher (Eskendereya) – “You’ve got to be excited when they perform like that in these kind of races at this time of year. I was particularly pleased with the way he finished. I don’t think we’ve ever gotten to the bottom of him. We threw a lot at him in the Breeders’ ...Read More
  • mdracing69 · Huge effort by Eskendereya in the FOY. He was #3 on my last Derby Top 10. When my new list comes out next week, the Pletcher runner will almost certainly shoot to the top. · 24 days ago
  • horses · The question is, does Eskendereya vault ahead of Lucky on your list and everyone else's. · 24 days ago
Eskendereya shook off Jackson Bend rounding the final turn of the $250,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park and romped home by 8 1/2 lengths under John Velazquez to register his first graded stakes win Feb. 20.Read More
We've been looking for a dominant Derby performance. We finally got one. Read More
The big horse in trainer Nick Zito's barn is, point of fact, not very big. In terms of accomplishments, Jackson Bend ranks among the best 3-year-olds in the country, with 5 wins and 2 second-place finishes in 7 starts. In terms of physical stature, though, Jackson Bend won't be mistaken for a nightc...Read More
Robert LaPenta and Jacks or Better Farm’s Jackson Bend and Kingfield Stable’s Buddy’s Saint rank high on most lists of leading Kentucky Derby (G1) prospects currently and will meet for the first time in Saturday’s $250,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park in the deepest ...Read More

Of the 23 individual betting interests in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, 10 are running this weekend and six ran last weekend. That means the fabric of this year’s Derby picture is going to be greatly altered by Sunday. It also means that a good number of Future Wager tickets will be virtually wor...Read More
A couple of graded events were contested over the holiday weekend, and the Southwest from Oaklawn Park has been rescheduled for Feb 20th after inclimate weather forced the cancellation of much of their card on Monday. Rule did his wire job thing in the Sam F Davis at Tampa Bay. I have no idea how go...Read More

The latest Wireplayers Dirty Dozen of Kentucky Derby contenders is out. It's a curious time on the Derby trail as so many of the top contenders have yet to get their first or second races under their tack as we approach the 3/4 mark of February. If Trainers and Connections want three starts before t...Read More
The Kentucky Derby presented by Yum picture is far from clear but after this weekend we should at least have some additional visibility. Back when magazines mattered, there used to be this thing called the “Sports Illustrated cover jinx.” I’m starting to worry that it might be replaced by the Ray Paulick “Paulick Derby Index jinx.” When we launched the 2010 edition of the Derby Index two weeks ago... Read More
The decision by Fair Grounds to rearrange its stakes schedule and push the Louisiana Derby back to March 27 did much more than simply motivate Gulfstream management to move the Grade 1 Florida Derby up a week to March 20 to avoid a potential head-to-head conflict between the two races. It has also p...Read More
