What the Nation is saying about J P's Gusto...

Some things just seem meant to be. A few weeks ago, it appeared the chances of Derby Kitten being part of the 137th Run for the Roses were slim to none. The son of Kitten's Joy had never won anything but a maiden race in eight tries. Although he had shown good form in 2011 including a fast closing 2...Read More
  • Waya · Ken Ramsey deserves to win a big one some day, maybe Saturday will be the day. I love the Kitten's Joy blood, and not just for turf. · 1085 days ago ·

Victories in the Oceanside Stakes and Del Mar Derby led to Twirling Candy being voted the  top 3-year-old male of the 2010 Del Mar meeting. A year older, with six more races of experience and under partially new ownership, Twirling Candy appears likely to be the only meet champion returning to ...Read More
GEM Inc.’s J P's Gusto, who hadn’t won a race since the grade I Del Mar Futurity last September, signaled his fondness for sprinting with a blowout victory in the $400,000 Red Legend Stakes for 3-year-olds at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races June 18.Before the race trainer Mike Hushion indicat...Read More
Impressive win the Red Legend. Im glad his connections found a distance that works well for him.
Six horses who started in a Kentucky Derby prep race, and one who exits the Derby itself, are part of a deep, competitive field entered in the $450,000 Red Legend Stakes on Saturday at Charles Town. The Red Legend, for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs around two turns, drew a field of 10, and may well h...Read More
The Kentucky Derby flu season is starting. In a few weeks, the fever will sweep thoroughbred racing. In a month, the disease will be everywhere. You can get a shot at your corner Walgreens to prevent it. But you’re probably better off taking two aspirin and waiting three months for the condition to ...Read More

It happens every single year, people see a hot new closer running on late to just barely miss, and then they go hog wild over him. For this year’s Derby, that horse’s name would be Nehro.Read More

  • ldeckergreenvalleytrainingcenter · Nehro did really well in the Kentucky Derby...so congrats to his connections! Looking forward to seeing him in The Belmont · 1071 days ago ·
  • blooy · psh nehor was a tough bastard, this was the extra room he needed, and the jockey really blew it, bad timing. you know he comes from out of the clouds not on turn, not sure what happend there. we saw it all the time down the strech near miss by nehro, then he makes the move on the turn, wait man, you fly on the strech. had they went on the strech, like animal kindom , could have been closer. but thats horse racing, guess a spoiler for the belmont? those closers all on timing, still congrats to him . · 1070 days ago ·
And then there were just four. With confirmation today that both The Factor and J P’s Gusto won’t run, only four horses that have been based on the West Coast at some point in their career are left as contenders for the 20 spots available in the starting gate at Churchill Downs for this year’s Kentu...Read More

  • DeadHeat · I know. So many people seemed to have jumped off even though he had a valid excuse I know some may have wanted a 6f move, however CD can be a tiring track, and it gets even worse when it is sloppy. Mo's time, considering the conditions was fairly quick and the stickiness probably allowed him to get more out of the work than he would going 5f over a fast track. · 1092 days ago ·
  • dubby30 · Stay Thirsty & Nehro for me, if you want to match pedigree against pedigree hands down both are going to stay the 10f before Mo does 100/100 times, if you're going to match talent vs talent Mo wins 85/100 but in picking the best set of 4 horses to round out my super Mo does not fit after this speed inducing work. Pros for mo - Most talented 3 year old running. fastest beyer figures, great trainer, top jock.Cons for mo - Pedigree and distance concerns, coming off sickness, 0 Stamina Building works, Quirky Prep schedule with a 1 mile public workout and a 1 mile (although the race was 1 1/8th mile) prep at the Big A, Last thing going against him, 0 Stamina building works. One more thing, 0 Stamina building works. I said after the Wood, no matter what test results showed, I needed to see a nice 6f work that gave indication that he was fit and that they were trying to put stamina into his diet of works, His 5f move today did nothing but put more speed into the horse, and although I really really like the horse alot, off this move, which i thought needed to be either 6f or 7f, and then see a 4f blowout before the race, he is a toss for me. For me at least, if he beats me with that many Cons, and the type of cons that he has working against him, so be it. But I'll look elsewhere. · 1092 days ago ·
Plenty has happened since we last checked in on April 11. The Factor flopped in the Arkansas Derby and he is off the Derby trail, along with Jaycito (foot issue). The defections of The Factor and J P’s Gusto on Tuesday paved the way for Shackleford and Twinspired to make the Kentucky Derby starting gate. J P's Gusto will not run in the Kentucky Derby. He will be sent to trainer Mike Hushion in New York.
With only 18 days until the big day, I offer my current projection on how the 20 horse field for this year’s Kentucky Derby will look including their odds. The Factor has arrived in Arkansas, and yes that is big news to ardent fans of the Kentucky Derby such as me. • gettyde · Everyone wants The Factor to do well cause everyone is desperate for another great horse to emerge. The problem is that this group looks pretty darn lackluster. Speed figures don't lie. The rest of these horses just aren't running that fast. Watch out for Sway Away; he's a horse that has natural speed and the breeding to take all the way. How bad would you want to run if you had you tooth snapped off? · 1104 days ago ·
  • bigbrown2332 · Well I agree with what you have to say gettyde, a lot of people want a great horse to come about. I wanted that to for a while to, but I think Zenyatta filled that desperateness for me. I know a lot of people say that she was a good mare, but not the best. but what she did for racing and what not, to me that shows a superhorse, and I do think she ranks up with there with the best mares, and best of all, thats what my gut tells me, so anyone who wants to get mad at me for what makes horse racing, keep it to yourselves...( with all do respect) . Like you said Speed figures don't lie, and there's not a star studded field lining up for the derby, but it's not lackluster. If you count in the whole crop of three year olds, you'll find a lot of very nice horses that have bright futures. · 1104 days ago ·

  • ajump08 · I think J J's Lucky Train may be able to rock the Bay Shore on the Wood Memorial under card. He ran well at two turns in the early winter, but his true talent is going one turn. Plus the best 3yo sprinters don't seem to be showing up for this one-Flashpoint, The Factor, Sway Away, even Travelin' Man are all elsewhere mostly looking at the Derby. · 1119 days ago ·
There was a single graded Derby prep last week and it was a doozy. The Factor seized control of the Rebel Stakes (103 BSF) from the outset and ran his rivals off their feet in a dazzling display of speed.
