J O Tobin
SEATTLE SLEW needed a rest, but J.O. TOBIN really let him have it that day in a performance for the ages. J.O. TOBIN blazed around that track as if he were ACK ACK and NATIVE DIVER rolled into one. That was a great race! There was just no catching him that day.

Here's another horse that should be in the Top 250 but he's not even anywhere near the Top 500! Must be jealous SEATTLE SLEW fans voting him down.

Mike, do you have any PP's on JO and Key to the Mint? HRN only lists JO with a win and two 5th place finishes.

bband, simply type J O Tobin or Key to the Mint in equibase.com's horse search. You'll find this tool on the left hand toolbar of the website. It doesn't get too specific, but at least lists all of the races they ran in, and year-by-year summary of their records. Looking for actual pp's I recomend commenting on Dan Illman's blog located at drf.com. He often gives out life time pp's to horses requested on the blog.

This was a fine horse! He ran Seattle Slew into the ground in a powerhouse performance. No one could have beaten J.O. Tobin that day! He ran a lot of other very fast races as well. He deserves a lot better than a 3.5 rating!

Oh dear...good heavens...some people just will not learn. There is no such thing as a "restricted" graded race. Grade 1's, for example, are not restricted races. Please call the Jockey Club or Daily Racing Form and have them explain this all to you. My goodness. To further educate you, probably the only other 10 furlong race at Hollywood Park in 1977, the Hollywood Gold Cup, was run in 2:00 flat. There goes your statement, right down the drain. J.O. Tobin ran an incredible race that day. He ran just like Native Diver or Ack Ack, going completely all out all the way! No one was going to beat him that day. Seattle Slew tracked him to the stretch, but was never able to get close at any point in time. J.O. Tobin broke Seattle Slew's heart that day. 1:58-3/5 by 8 lengths, and defeating 'Slew by 16 lengths, was just unreal. Seriously, though, call DRF, Jockey Club or Equibase so they set you straight about the fact that Grade 1 races are not "restricted" races and that the "restricted" designation in horse racing has a very specified meaning. Racing fans, especially argumentative ones, need to know these things.

jackie999 I've been at this for 45 years.owned them, trained them, groomed, hot walked, etc. We are obviously on a different page concerning "restricted Grade " races as what they mean by restricted is that many of these graded races are restricted by "age or gender" the Kentucky Derby for instance is a restricted grade 1 race by age for 3 year olds. We have some differences of opinion but I do admire yor tenacity.

icyhotboo-JO Tobin didn't run well in the Preakness because he ran down badly. He came out of the race with his heels(?) all bloody and they put extra run downs on him because he disliked deep, sandy tracks. He was a two year old champion in England, but was considered too fast for the classics over there. Brought here and with his trainer and Shoe finally got him calmed down, as he was a nut. His trainer retired because of cancer and JO Tobin's owner sold him. Laz Barrera was his trainer as a 4 yr old and decided to try to rate him. Didn't work and JO Tobin just got nuttier and nuttier. In his last race, Jeff Fell rode him in the Tom Fool, I think. When they asked him after the race how the trip was, Jeff said it was the scariest ride he ever had on a horse. He had never been on a horse who was full speed on e stride out of the gate. He just grabbed on to the mane and let the horse run. Hwe never wanted to get on that horse again. He does not want to race. The horse became a basket case, but still ran credible races even though mentally he just wasn't there. The horse could turf, dirt, sprint and route. With a healthy mind and maybe Whittingham as his trainer he could have been something special. As it was he was still a very good horse.

Grade 1 races (or any graded races at all) are not "restricted by state breds," such a race is called a "restricted" race and carries with it an "R" in all past performances. The Kentucky Derby is not "restricted" by earnings. Do you know what a restricted race is? It's a race, like all the races that Pepper's Pride competed in, where the entrants are "restricted" based on things like being "Arizona breds," or horses who came out of a particular sale, or horses who haven't won a stakes race in their lives, or whatever. The Kentucky Derby is not a "restricted" race. You got some really good advice, about calling the Jockey Club about this issue so that you can become properly informed, and it would be nice if you took that advice as I'm sure it was well intended. It is an absolute FACT that Grade 1 races are not "restricted" races. There's a big difference between a "restricted" race and race "conditions."

"The Kentucky Derby is not "restricted" by earnings." MikeSek...If the Kentucky Derby is not restricted by earnings then why can't 3,000 plus owners that would gladly pay the entry fee aren't eligible because of earnings, and the maximum number of horses at this date allowed to run is set at 20.Those being the top 20, 3 year old money earners minus the automatic entries for winning certain races.A belt restricts your pants from falling down but it's not called a restricter its called a belt. Why is that? Try and think outside of the box at least once in your life you would be amazed what wonders await you.You may even come to realize when you read the KD results on May,8,2011 that the winner ran and won this very day but you missed it because you were busy schooling me.

icyhotboo, The Kentucky Derby is not restricted. 3,000 owners could enter their horse, but only the 20 horses with the top graded earnings are taken. Races often overfill, and when this happens the track wants the highest quality field possible, and Churchill does this through simply taking the top twenty in terms of graded earnings. In some cases a set of people that work for the track will go through all of the enetered horses and take the ones they feel most deserve to run, or in less important races they well simply be drawn at random. Thoroughbred graded stakes are all unrestricted; however, quarter horse races can be graded while also being restricted. Hopefully that clears a few things up.

Graded stakes do often however have restrictions/conditions like gender and age. This does not make a race into a restricted race though.

ajump08 I appreciate your input but as a former horse owner, groom, hot walker, jogging horses,I was well aware of that. The reason I posted what I did is every post from this person comes in a condescending all knowing form which I resent. Thank you for your input and civility. footlick I didn't realize he was that caliber of horse as he never comes up in conversation or articles. Whirlaway was a nutcase also. Arcaro was scared to death of him.

I know. He is sort of forgotten. He finished 3rd in Blushing Groom's Critereum to end his two year old year. At three he won the Swaps. At 4, he won the Californian, Tom Fool, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Premiere and the Malibu. I think he finished second in the Woodward that year too. Not bad for a horse who just got crazier and more uncontrollable as a 4 yr old. I had heard of Whiorlaway being a nutjob too. I didn't know Arcaro was afraid of him. I know that Shoe was afraid of Dr Fager. I just thought it was a shame, how JO Tobin ended his career. Jeff Fell was sure the horse hated being on the racetrack and he just wanted to go around the track as fast as he could.

You are the only person on here who is "all knowing" and "condescending." And, even worse, you're impossible to teach because you refuse to learn. If you've been at the racetrack for 45 years and you still think the Kentucky Derby is a "restricted" race, and that "Grade 1" races are "restricted" races, then you're just sorely and willfully misinformed. You're just wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. In horse racing terminology, and in all records kept by Equibase, Jockey Club and Daily Racing Form, a "restricted" race allows only horses bred in a certain state, or horses who haven't won during a particular time period, or horses who were in a particular sale, to compete in that race. That is what a "restricted" race is. This is so simple. It's easy to learn. Pepper's Pride had an "R" right next to each one of her races. Do you know why? Because they were all "restricted" to New Mexico breds! Zenyatta never an in a "restricted" race in her entire life! Never. Never. Never. Thank you. I hope this has some impact. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Jackie999 I knew all along you were right but I was more than a little sore at you for running Seattle Slew down because he lost a race because of his owners ignorance, greed,or both.As far as horse racing history I remember it very well but up to this time had never realized J O Tobin was that caliber of horse because when people talk horses or even write about horses ,both great and not so great he never comes up.If footlick didn't clue me in I still wouldn't know. BTW as a 4yo Spectacular Bid was a monster.Where in the top ten I would rank him I don't know but he would be there along with Slew.Naturally these rankings are purely subjective but I never saw the value of degrading one horse to elevate another.

Sorry for running Seattle Slew down. I didn't mean to. He's a great horse. I can't knock him out of the Top 10 of all time. He was a monster! I agree that he should not have been in the Swaps Stakes at all, and his owners should have listened to the good advice of their trainer. But I really do think that J.O. Tobin ran an incredible race that day. He deserves some recognition - and he deserves some high votes on this site - for all his accomplishments. Getting back to Seattle Slew and the other greats, I think when it comes to the Top 10 or 12 horses of all time it gets hard to determine exactly which one is best, or which one is better than the other, it's that close! So I don't blame or begrudge anyone who thinks Seattle Slew is the best, or Secretariat, or Spectacular Bid, or Affirmed, or Forego, or Dr. Fager, or Damascus...or whatever. I think an excellent case can be made for most any of them! I'm glad we're all still friends. :) I didn't mean to get out of line. Sorry if I did.
