The only horses that i've seen in my lifetime that could be compared to Ruffian were Eight Belles and Rachel Alexandra. EB was an amazing talent that we lost much too early, she could have been anything, and to lose her hurt so much. Listening to Barclay Tagg Ruffians exercise rider say: "“Sure, they belong in the same breath,” said the trainer Barclay Tagg, "Rachel’s beaten the Kentucky Derby winner and she beat the Belmont winner, and won the Preakness. Yes, you have to compare them.” Not before and not since has such a comparison been made from the likes of those that were around Ruffian. She was that special, and it tells you about how much respect people have for Rachel to be mentioned with Ruffian. Considering though that Rachel broke 2 of Ruffian's Records in the Mother Goose the comparisons seem fitting and valid. But no other horse i've seen is able to be compared to Ruffian. · 689 days ago ·

LAZMANICK · Dubby................Well that makes two of you that compare Rachel to Ruffian, you and Barcly. Welcome to the real world. If you want to compare fillies winning a TC race then start with fillies that were Derby winners and which actually defeated multi G1 winning competitors (that had accomplished careers both before and after the TC series). That means you will have to start with WInning Colors and Genuine Risk. And if you want to make comparisons to fillies and all three TC races then start and end with Genuine Risk. And don’t even mention Ruffian and Rachel in the same breath, you might suffocate. Ruffian won at classic distances, and lost ground in a call only 3 times in 40 calls, pre match race. There is only one other filly or mare that can compare to her and we all know who that is. · 689 days ago ·

New York Vinnie · RQoR - I asked you a question earlier about it Ruffian would be undefeated if she faced horses such as Ginger Punch, Music Note, Life Is Sweet, Cocoa Beach, Hystericalady, Tough Tizs Sis, Carriage Trail, Romance Is Diane, Switch, St. Trinians, Summer Bird, Gio Ponti, Twice Over, Einstein, Colonel John, Girolamo, Rip Van Winkle, Richard's Kid, Awesome Gem, Regal Ransom, Mine That Bird, Lookin At Lucky, Quality Road, Fly Down, First Dude, Paddy O'Prado, Musket Man, Espoir City, Haynesfield and Etched. And you didn't answer. Perhaps being from Australia you are unaward that these aforementioned horses have won approximately 70 Grade 1 races, 7 Eclipse Awards and 8 Divisional Champions. When she died, it was the headline on the front page of practically every paper in the country. The PTB in horseracing tried to exploit Ruffian's popularity for ratings & greed & has been paying for it ever since. The sports steady decline began on this day 36 yrs. ago. New York Vinnie · francis - don't kid yourself. Zenyatta is the most popular racehorse since Secretariat. Everyone agrees to that. It's common knowledge. There were people in Kentucky last November that said they've never seen a horse that captivated people's attention like Zenyatta did. lesleymorley · I will never forget that day. I was only ten and I cried the whole day. As for comparing her to Z—that's impossible. It was a different time. Those of us who saw her run and were watching CBS when Ruffian broke down know. I've said it here elsewhere, Ruffian was otherworldly. Watching her run was magical. But that was back in the days when racing was still like that. Fortunately, we all got to experience Zenyatta—and she retired sound, thank heavens. She brought some of the magic back to racing. We can only hope it lasts and the public that Zenyatta brought to the sport stick around. As long as they can keep things clean, I'm hopeful that all those Z fans out there come back for more. (I know that NBC is counting on it. I've been seeing ads on TV for their coverage at the Spa.) · 687 days ago ·
