dreamingofanna, was Secretariat undeafeted? No. Barbaro was going to win the Triple Crown if he didn't break his leg. Barbaro, Ruffian, Colin, and Personal Ensign are the only horses I know that have ended there career undeafeted. Secretariat just got lucky enough to win the Triple Crown. Barbaro was the only good shot other than Smarty Jones to have won the Triple Crown since Affirmed.

That horse was supernatural, a freak of nature. Barbaro was a flash in the pan great. But he didn't do enough to signify he'd be alltime great, much less best horse ever. It is extremely unfortunate for Barbaro to have lost like that, he was what really made me obsessively follow horse racing though I've followed it many more years than that, but Secretariat did not get "lucky" he is in the very essence what a Thoroughbred Race Horse should be. xMystix · I don't understand this thinking of Secretariat being so-called "lucky" in winning the Triple Crown. He still holds a world record for a mile and a half distance on dirt, and no horse has come close to that record on dirt since. I don't call that being lucky. Besides, if someone is going to lump Secretariat into the "lucky" category because he wasn't undefeated, then with that logic, one would lump Man O' War into the "lucky" category, too, of winning anything? After all, he wasn't undefeated, either. However, that way of logic just doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Barbaro was an amazing race horse in his own right, and I remember crying when I saw his Preakness run, as well as followed his recovery accounts up to his euthanization. Unfortunately, we will never know his true and honest potential because of the tragic event. We should appreciate what he gave us as fans, instead of belittling other horses. I remembered crying my eyes out when my mom picked me up from high school, and she told me. So please, don't try to destroy memories of a race horse, and instead, appreciate the beautiful race horse that he once was. · 714 days ago ·

If there was such thing, we would be celebrating a triple crown in AK. The fact remain, big red went out and win the Triple Crown and break record while doing it. I love barbaro and all but no way, Secretariat isnt just a race horse he is Secretariat, he stands alone, he broke record, so what he didnt have a perfect record, after each time he lost, he came back to win and break a record, Barbaro didnt race enough for it to matter if he would have had a perfect record or not! Secretariat is uncomparable, anyone who compares a horse to him is a fool, and Secretariat didnt just get lucky as you say, so him blowing everyone away by 31 lengths in the longest race most race horses ever have to face is just lucky to you? How stupid, maybe barbaro was going to win the triple crown, so, that doesnt make him a better horse the Big Red, Barbaros career wasnt finished! He wasnt hardly fully tested, he probably would have lost a couple, even if not, no near like Secretariat perfect record or not! ruffian75 · I don't think that rating the 3YO crop was weak would be correct. Bernardini turned out to be a decent competitor. And, by argument, Secretariat broke all 3 track records. Pimlico unveiled their new computer timing that year. Their final time indicated that Secretariat didn't break the record, but DRF did a hand time, and studied the record holder to Secretariat's running frame-by-frame. In the end, Pimlico wouldn't acknowledge Secretariat, but DRF did. · 705 days ago ·

xMystix · To add to ruffian75's comment, there was also another clocker from a different part of the track that also clocked the same time as the DRF clocker. It didn't matter with all the evidence, and the video footage of the previous record breaker, frame-by-frame, showing that Secretariat clearly beat the track record. Pimlico was too stubborn and proud to recognize the mistake. Thank goodness for DRF mentioning the actual time of Secretariat. · 705 days ago ·
