Sure, it's possible that none of the horses we're discussing will even make it to the Derby (let alone win it), but it's equally possible that our Derby winner could be found among the horses tagged in this article. humphrey · Maturation of a thoroughbred is all about learning to apportion speed. Watch enough babies and you recognize MOST start out by running as fast as they can as far as they can. The better ones, learn to relax and make a sustained move on que......Many many babies never get out of that initial mode and you can predict the ones as they strectch out having earlier and earlier styles as the distance stretches out. You can usually eliminated over 60% of the Derby field each year on that alone: Great exclusions were Pollard's Vison, Bellamy Road and a host of others. · 865 days ago ·

humphrey · I feed the horse, teach him his lessons to the extent of his current abilities and then put him in a competitive condition which I hope will fit him, BUT once the gate opens it is the HORSE that does the running. All those lessons occurred in isolation not in a race. I ride the horse and like McCarron always stated: "MY job is to let him run HIS RACE and keep him out of trouble"... it is the HORSE who does the running, not the rider. Bad rides occur when the rider fights the natural tendencies of the animal. After Arcagnes won the Breeder's Cup Classic, people asked Bailey what did he do? His answer was in line with what McCarron told us: "I let the horse run his race and did not try to impose MY will on him." And the horse won the race because he let the horse run. Same can be said for the farrier, groom....owner any HUMAN that is not out on the track running in the race. Finally,, the gates open and randomness is the first addition to the equation. Bumps, blocks, slips, dropping whips, checked , in tight, taken up...Take your pick and it can happen. Denying this is a first class ticket to the poor farm. · 865 days ago ·
