Older Comments about Handsome Mike...

Ok I think he's done racing now. Need to retire him
  • Northport · He's competitive when he wants to be, and he has raced in about every race he can. Dirt routes, dirt sprints, turf sprints, turf routes, synthetic sprints. I would say a drop in class could suit him on the dirt maybe? He's definitely a hard one to figure out. · 1060 days ago
  • Dressage3295 · He's always been one to not to do so well and then throw in the occasional good race. It actually looks like it's shaping up to be one of his better years. The top 3 yesterday have been doing quite well. As long as he's not showing any signs of duress or sourness, I see no reason to stop now · 1060 days ago
Races tomorrow in the Clocker's Corner at Santa Anita! Good luck! Faces Drill, El Commodore, Boat Trip, etc
Is he still in training?
Can some one find me contact info for John Liviakis?
i HATE how they handle this horse. they put him in so many races that he does not belong in.

  • Sullivan · In the BCC he was coming off a win beating the Travers winner, he was competitive in both his starts at Santa Anita and Mr. Reddam wanted to have a horse run. There is credible thought behind the decision and it's not like there aren't upsets, should you choose Raven's Pass, Volponi or Drosselmeyer. In the San Fernando he was running at an easier distance against a much easier set of horses, to the point that the race was actually agre restricted. I saw that race as a minor step down in class and confidence booster. In the Hollywood Derby he was running at a track he liked at a distance he could handle and it was restricted to 3 year olds. he had shown promise on turf with his hitting the tail end of the board in the Secretariat and I think that was acceptable. The Santa Anita Handicap had some strong horses in it but the rest of the field were the same old, same old Calfiornia horses. Why should Reddam not have run his horse when he was on an upward slope as the distances got longer? No shame in running for second cash or even for trying to hang on to Game on Dude's tail. In the met mile they had him at a distance he liked anything is possible. Comma to the Top and Sahara Sky were two shippers who had success coming to the east coast, why not run him there? There weren't too many other stakes. Hopefully Reddam runs him at Del Mar, Arlington and Woodbine, his polytrack form is pretty good and he looked great over the stuff · 1429 days ago
  • travel_vic · Realize that some trainers use races as preps and they are not always entered for the win · 1429 days ago
Mario continues to conquer the big time...Imagine that a little rider from previously almost unknown Hastings Park...Way to go bub.

  • Mary Z. · Yes, that's it, Red Ryder mysteries. · 1474 days ago
  • travel_vic · The one solid thing that Mario brings to the game, and it surprising in a youngster, is patience......He keeps them out of trouble too. Good mentoring in vancouver by Troy Taylor and Glenn Todd. · 1474 days ago
Glad to see him win again.
I have some observations about this one... First of all, I think he really likes synthetics. He was 7th in the Cashcall (G1) on synthetics, but only by two lengths. He was 3rd in the El Camino Derby (G3) and 4th in Spiral Stakes (G3). Add that to his win today, and that is a solid record. I also think he benefits running at a bit shorter of a distance... Classic Keeneland surface. Crap shoot and you have no idea who will respond to it, in either a good or bad way. That's why i don't bet KEE, but if I did today, I would have hit it! Nice ride by Mario G, also.
A couple of Grade 2 winners for trainer Doug O’Neill worked together after the morning maintenance break for likely stakes engagements. Reddam Racing’s Handsome Mike, winner of the 2012 Pennsylvania Derby and a candidate for the Commonwealth Stakes (G3) on April 13, and Zillah Reddam’s Renee’s Titan, winner of this year’s Santa Ynez Stakes and a candidate for the Beaumont Presented by Keeneland Select Stakes (G2) on April 14, worked a half-mile in :47.80. Keeneland clockers caught the first quarter-mile in :23.60 and had a gallop-out time of 1:01.40 for five furlongs.
He got 4th? I forgot to check lol silly me not too shabby. This horse is pretty solid, just needs more wins to be really solid.
  • Southern.humor · contradictory post much? Good but not good, because he doesn't actually win. Stupid luck is what I would chalk this horses G1 win to. I think he is in way to over his head. The only thing this horse is 'solid' at in graded races is finsihing off the board. He needs to take a step (or multiple) down, and he might actually start winning something. · 1540 days ago
  • rafirox · He is an ok horse. He could really be a good G3 horse, but Doug is running him in every G1 or G2 he can. This horse (imo) has been handled poorly. · 1539 days ago
I'd like to see him win tomorrow but Tritrap and and Fed Biz beat him last time out. Hoping the tables will turn this time for The ever-so-Handsome Mike!
  • UnionRagsRules · Even though he's only ever won twice I could see him running at least a respectable third. I think I'll go with those three any order. · 1545 days ago
  • rafirox · I like Tritap here. He has slowly been maturing, and last out had a breakout race, and I think the nine furlongs will help him. Probably gonna play him like $15 WP, or something. Depending on odds. Also will play a trifecta. · 1544 days ago
Where did he place?
Uhm how?
  • Show All 19 Comments
  • CauseForConcern · Your point is understood, but, every emerging horse who can eventually be destined for greatness, has to start somewhere. The day that Holy Bull pulled up lame, never to race again, was the "unveiling" of a new up-and-comer that had little prior exposure by the name of Cigar. · 1676 days ago
  • illhaveanothertriplecrown · How? Best trainer in the biz thats how · 1675 days ago
Another West Coast goes back East to take another big money race, maybe the East Coast runner's should start considering coming out West just like Dullahan did to win the Pacific Classic instead of hiding on the East Coast waiting for the competion to come to them.
why is he even considered for the Haskell?
On June 11, Handsome Mike posted a 5 furlong bullet in 59.60 (1/45) at Betfair Hollywood Park.
