Gun Bow was clearly of championship caliber. But Kelso was around. He gave Kelso all he wanted.

  • Buckpasser · In the Brooklyn handicap in which Gun Bow set a track record, Kelso acted up in the starting gate and either reared up or something similar and banged his head badly. Those were the days when you didn't unload the horses to see if everything was ok, but just sent them off in the race. I also read he had colic the night before and was cow kicking in the paddock that day. The Aqueduct stakes of 1964 was to be the crowning of a new King for many people as it seemed with the advent of Gun Bow, the age of Kelso was over. I will never forget that race. You can see it on you tube. Gun Biw took the knead and was winging his way in front. I think was ahead by as much as five lengths. Kelso was in second and was beginning to roll. He had cut a Gun Bow's lead to about a length and a half. That was when the people in the stands started screaming for Kelso. Everyone was on his feet. Some were yelling look him in the eye Kelly. Kelso and gun Bow were together as they turned for home. Then slowly Kelso moved in front. But Gun Bow wouldn't give up, he came at Kelso again, but the old man wouldn't let him by. At the end Kelso was almost a length clear. I have never hear the stands shake the way they find that day. Everyone was cheering for Kelso. The old man was back. · 578 days ago
  • Buckpasser · Gun Bow was also the sire of one of my favorite fillies, the great Pistol Packer. People forget that Eddie Neloy trained Gun Bow for Gedney Farm. He trained for them before he was tapped to be the trainer for the Phipps family. · 578 days ago
