  • 12thCrown · I think FG spacing the race as is hurts their chances for top contenders. Very few will wheel back for another race like Nehro did last year. But it's shocking they don't draw better candidates with the $1 million purse! I love visiting that track... can't believe Asmussen is heading west this winter. · 42 days ago ·

  • DeadHeat · 12thCrown I believe he did last year too, with Tapizar. That one got injured though, and was his top horse before Nehro was really ever thought about. · 41 days ago ·

Chalk this one up as a great idea. On Saturday, November 26, the Fair Grounds will run a race featuring contemporary horses competing in the names and silks of many of the greatest horses to compete at the historic racetrack. Now on this very blog I have created and run some terrific fantasy races, ...Read More

  • likin sparks · Woo wee! This is a cool idea...my picks would be on a trifecta Whirlaway/Master Derby/Tenacious all three totally dominated at the Fair Grounds and of course my sleeper would be Risen Star and plug him into WPS, loved that horse. · 83 days ago ·

In 1996, Grindstone won the Louisiana Derby (which at the time was a grade III and run in mid-March), prepped for the Kentucky Derby in the Arkansas Derby, and went on to capture the roses by a nose. Three years later in 1999, Charismatic, who had run in a $62,500 claimer at Santa Anita in February,...Read More
I would be hard-pressed to name an individual who has had a bigger impact on American racing over the last 30 years than D. Wayne Lukas, a member of the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame and four-time Eclipse Award winner as outstanding trainer. From sales pavilions in ...Read More
  • humphrey · The breakdown KING without second place even being in the same universe! How many really good ones were lost during this reign of medications. Jim Squires tells about the culture of drugs used to prep the quarter horses for show and exactly who and when it became a standard in the t-bred community. Friends at Claiborne told me of how studdish Winning Colors was for almost 6 months and how this FEMALE looked like a male (WONDER WHY?) before they could get her is foal. Darrel Wayne brings you the wonders of pharmaceuticals. Most folks wouldn't have treated a stray dog the way he treated Lady's Secret. · 666 days ago ·

  • mdracing69 · Had to sweat two photos. Grindstone/Cavonnier for the win + Halo Sunshine/Unbridled's Song to round out the super. The racing gods were smiling that day! · 1020 days ago ·

  • mshutty · I remember tossing the 1-5 exacta ticket in the garbage and then moments later realizing my pick, Editors Note, was coupled with Grindstone. Found the ticket with ketchup smudge and all! · 1019 days ago ·

Ah yes, I remember it like it was yesterday. Plunked down $60 in '96 Derby superfecta. I tossed Unbridled's Song & Skip Away, keying Lukas coupled entry Grindstone/Editor's Note over 5 horses, including Cavonnier, Prince of Thieves, and Halo Sunshine. The racing gods were smiling as all the photos went my way in an improbable exotic score.
  • PICKALL · That was one of the BETTER DERBIES in my life. Those photos seem to have lasted an eternity, the minutes felt like hours. That race seems like it was a Century ago. I do remember Where we went to bet the race, Delaware Park and the exact place we watched the race. There were no 10 cent supers then. That was some GREAT PICKING for then, a young Jarrod Horack. Thanks for the great memories ! Gus · 1033 days ago ·
