larooski · A horse named Golden Broom finished 3rd to Upset and Man O'War in the 1919 Sanford Memorial-4.9k for 2yos Aug 13th at Saratoga. Upset won by 1/2 a length over Man O'War. It was another 3 back to Golden Broom in the 6f race over a fast track. The final time for the 6f was 1:11 1/5. Upset carried 115 lbs. Man O'War and Golden Broom carried 130lbs. · 400 days ago ·

larooski · then why did you say he retired undefeated in 12 starts? And Upset definitely won the 1919 Sanford over MOW. That was MOW's only loss. Everybody knows that. Well almost everybody. MOW had a slow start and was gaining but lost by 1/2 length giving 15 pounds to the winner. MOW was .55-1. If your going to correct somebody, at least be right. · 400 days ago ·

Mary Z. · I found out that Golden Broom cost three times what Man O'War did as a yearling, which was only $15,600 to $5,000 for Man O' War, but then those are 1918 prices, and that Golden Broom's original name was Switch. The undefeated part is not correct. Why'd it take 76 days to notice that? lol. Was that a test, cocoa? · 399 days ago ·

cocoa2 · TV caught me, I was reading a wikipedia article and must have switched names or something. Anyway, Golden Broom was the Riddle's relative's colt, and while he LOOKED better than Man O' War he was not in the long run (quite obviously). He was smaller, a top class sprinter. Now in the Sanford it was before the starting gate, and all the had was a barrier. The jocks used to have their horses break the barrier in the hope Man O' War would too and loose energy. On the Sanford day the jocks excericised this, but a new starter was in place. Fearing a finish he had once had where the horses had been at the barrier for I believe 90 minutes, he let the horses off t the closest shot. Man O' War was turned around, facing the starter not the open track. He was a good 10 lengths off a slow pace set by Upset, and got boxed in mid pack by Loftus. Loftus then finally got him to the outside in the homestretch, and he could have won it, but instead Loftus brought him to the inside again, and he was blocked again, and he had to go to the outside AGAIN, loosing a lot of ground and catching up to upset only in time to hit the wire second, a neck back. Nobody thought Upset won that day but Upset's trainer himself, Rowe I think his name was, and he tried Upset vs. Man O' War several more times, Upset crushed each time. · 399 days ago ·

larooski · It wasn't a track record. MOW got a 95 DRF 'speed rating' (not a Beyer of course but the speed rating you see between the odds of a horse and the names of the top 3 finishers in the DRF). If MOW got a 95 a lost by a half length there is no way Upset got a 100 which would mean he equaled the track record. Going by MOW's speed rating of a 95 and the fact that he was on 1/2 length behind the winner, they were about 1 second of the record. A speed rating point is worth 1/5 of a second. Five points from 100 means 1 second behind the record. · 398 days ago ·

larooski · for example MOW got a 132 speed rating in winning the 1920 Ken Park Gold Cup over Sir Barton. That means he broke the track record by 6 and 2/5 seconds. Sir Barton who was 7 lengths back got a 125 speed rating meaning he broke the track record by 5 seconds himself but was 7 lengths behind MOW. Secretariat got a 113 in the Belmont meaning he broke the TR by 2 and 3/5 seconds. · 398 days ago ·

Upset broke nothing but the barrier. Man O' War missed many records by slim margins and broke many with his head in his chest. If not for Riddle's smart judgement to keep him from extending himself he may have hurt or killed himself at top speed. Look at Sec's Belmont, in a horses stride there is a point where the horse is off the ground, and a point where it has only one foot on the ground. The stress between these too is huge, as is the stress on the leading foot, as it has 2 tons of moving flesh on it. If it breaks everything is over. · 398 days ago ·

footlick · the Sanford started running in the year 1913. The stakes record before the 1919 running was 1:13.40. So the time of 1:11.20 set a new stakes record that stood until 1944 when the Doge ran it in 1:10.40. So, Upset did break more than the barrier, cocoa2. · 398 days ago ·
