23 years ago we were facing a very similar set up for the distaff. I remember the atmosphere surrounding what could potentially be one of the best filly/mare races ever. Unfortunatly the results were catastrophic. Lets us hope we have a much happier ending to this climatic race. It should be a good one.

  • LAZMANNICK · I guess we don’t understand things like lactic acid the way you do Vic. This is what I do understand. Go For Wand’s individual Beldame fractions when running about a half-length off the pace setter for the first six furlongs: 0:23.41, 0:45.88 and 1:09.33. Turning for home, Go For Wand too9k over and hit the mile in 1:33.38 with a personal fourth quarter time of 24.05 and easily opening up a two length lead. She then finished the race in 1.45 91 with a final 8th in 12.53 and winning by just under 5 lengths. If she had been ridden out she probably would have beaten the JCGC time run in 2.00.63 later on the card by Flying Continental. Taking her rate of slow down between the final two 8ths, I extrapolated an additional eighth in 13.05 which would have given her the 10F in 1.58.96, this while winning easily…..In fact she won so easily and was so dominating that they strongly considered running her in the BCC instead of the Distaff. In fact many think that if she was entered she would have been the BCC favorite. There is no way that Bayakoa would ever outrun Go For Wand going 9F or more and I say this with no disrespect for Bayakoa. She was truly a great mare but, Go For Wand was one of those fillies that only comes around every once in a while. · 1274 days ago
  • shuvee · I think Go For Wand had successfully turned back Bayakoa and was starting to pull away when she broke down. They were both extremely tough horses but Go For Wand was the better mare, I believe. Paul Moran from Newsday wrote a great column about the race in which he opined the same thing. I haven't been able to find that column now for sometime but will try to dig it out. · 1274 days ago
I've been reading the Thoroughbred Legends series. I've read Sunday Silence (again), Man O'War, War Admiral, Dr. Fager, Personal Ensign, and now I'm reading Go For Wands. I've read most of the book, and now I'm up to her final race. I just can't seem to get myself to finish it. I know how it ends, I witnessed it on TV. Its one of those "burned" into the memory type things. I loved this filly. She was a very special, her wins were brilliant, and I think she was well on her way to being a Great One.

  • SSilence86 · Ambitious- You asked before which one so far was my favorite read? I like Forego (reading now), but beside SS's, I really really enjoyed Dr. Fager's story. A definite must read. · 1336 days ago
NBA finals are over and Ive been thinking what would be the dream team of horse racing. Rules are you need 3colts 2fillys to fill your all time dream team. Now you dont have to pick the best of all time just the ones you like the best and want on your starting 5 dream team. Mine would go like this- Seabiscuit, Cigar, John Henery, Go For Wand, Rachael Alexandra

Today we honor the memory of the extraordinary Go For Wand who lost her life in the Distaff 22 years ago today. Another racing legend gone too soon. Rest In Peace, Beautiful Wand.

  • Dressage3295 · My best friend was a fan of Bayakoa, I was one of Go For Wand. Obviously Bayakoa had the better career- she lived through it and went on to show what she was made off. Call me biased, but I believe my girl would have won that day. She was a tough filly and wasn't giving Bayakoa an inch at the stretch- she was hanging on. Will we ever know for sure? Course not, but we'll all have our own opinions, and mine is that Go For Wand was a truly talented filly who would've won that day · 1642 days ago

don't think that she would've been beaten that day she broke down.
Would've won that Breeders Cup and beaten Bayakoa.

  • larooski · Go For Wand was one of my dad's favorite horses and Bayakoa was one of mine. Dad cried after that race and I felt like crap too. I remember them both winning on BC day the year before at Gulfstream. Very sad. · 1831 days ago
