What the Nation is saying about Gladiatorus...

I have it from someone who went into the stables at the Breeder's Cup and looked at Gladiatorus at the Breeder's Cup. He was skin and bones!! Overraced and needing a break. What were the connections thinking?
  • medlocke · Gladiatorus has been retired now. He's standing stud at a farm in Italy. You could tell by watching him on t.v. in the 09' B.C. Mile that he was a good deal thinner, and not nearly in the kind of shape he was in at Nad Al Sheba when he dominated at the 09' Dubai Carnival. · 1066 days ago ·
In 2009, Gladiatorus went to Dubai and destroyed three different fields in winning the Jaguar XF Trophy, the Al Fahidi Fort, and the Duty Free. Posting three massive speed figures, and at that time, making him the top rated horse in the world. Against very good competition too. Horses like Presvis, Paco Boy, Alexandros, Imbongi, Bankable, Jay Peg, and Calming Influence. But since leaving Dubai in 09', he was well beaten in the 09' Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot won by Paco Boy, and well beaten in 09 B.C. Mile, fading badly in the stretch in both races. He did have one decent run before the B.C. Mile in Italy. Winning a mile race easily against very weak competition. But the form he displayed in Dubai, and the sudden lack of any kind of form at all, make's me wonder if Gladiatorus was perhaps doped in some way while racing in Dubai? I really like this colt. But I've just never seen a horse go from being so impressive to so disappointing as quickly as Gladiatorus seems to have gone. JMO.
Does anyone know if Godolphin Stables is planning on racing Gladiatorus anytime in the foreseeable future, or have they decided to retire him? If they are planning on racing him, given very poor finishes in the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot, and the 09' Breeders Cup Mile, and if they do plan to race him, why they didn't send him back over to Dubai in 2010 which was the sight of his most impressive racing to date. Sweeping the Carnival and winning the Jaguar XL Trophy, the Al Fahidi Fort, and Dubai Duty Free in 2009. It seems to me that returning to the seen of the crime where he literally stole races in Dubai, that that would've been a likely spot for Gladiatorus to return, possibly win some big races again, and get his confidence restored by getting back into Group 2 and Group1 winning form like he did in Dubai in 2009. JMO.
Just wondering if Godolphin is planning on sending Gladiatorus back to Dubai in 2010 for any racing? He ran everyone into the ground in 2009 during the Carnival winning the Jaguar XL Trophy, the Al Fahiti Fort, and the Dubai Duty Free posting massive speed figures in all three races, and at that time, until Sea The Stars burst onto the scene, was the top rated horse in the world. I know the 2010 Carnival has started as Presvis was just beaten in his race on February 5th finishing 2nd in a three horse race. The most impressive horse I've seen race in Dubai yet during the 2010 Carnival is Alexandros. He blew the field away in his race on February 4th. These races can be seen on RacingUK or attheraces.com.
  • DubaiRaceNight · I am fairly certain that Gladiatorus is in Dubai and is likely to reappear later in the Carnival. Luca Cumani said he got nothing from the Presvis run, and I have to agree. A complete dodgy pace that kept him from showing his form. They are likely to try again. I might have to agree that Alexandros was the most impressive performer so far, given the way he won. Gloria De Campeao showed much grit staying on, rerallying at the rail and the second home in that race, Forgotten Voice, really caught my eye as an improving colt. · 1531 days ago ·
Gladiatorus is a colt that really impresses me. I'm not sure what happened to him in the Queen Anne Stakes or the B.C. Mile, but if he ever get's back to the form he displayed in Dubai in the Jaguar Trophy, the Al Faheti Fort, and the Dubai Duty Free, he'll definitely be back among the top horses in the world, should that happen. He ran really powerfully in those three races. Sprinting away and running off from all three of those fields, against horses like Jay Peg, Paco Boy, and Vodka, Japan's champion race mare. I hope he's able to resume that form because he's a special horse to watch when he run's like that.

  • arazi · I agree Justenuffhumor is a strong play in the Mile. He's proven over firm turf and although he could be off form, you'd feel silly not to forgive him for one bad race over soft turf and a slow pace. Another possibility is that Justenuff bounced. He ran a lifetime top in the Fourstardave, then ran back to it in the Bernard Baruch and then bounced big time at Keeneland. I haven't looked at the sheets yet, but those guys might say this guy has improved a ton since he started running in December and that it was inevitable he would bounce after the two big efforts. They would also say that he will need more time to come back. However, at 12-1, you have to use him strongly and take a shot it was the soft turf. What'sthescript running late for a piece is also a nice call... as former Miler's usually do better their second try... and he will be a fat price. · 1627 days ago ·
  • Rossington · I don't think Justenuffhumor has enough to win the mile. I think, even though Goldikova is a very talented filly, Delegator is the horse to beat in the mile. My mile tri-fecta is Delegator, Gladiatorus, and Goldikova with Zacinto coming in 4th. jmo. · 1627 days ago ·
Oh how I do hope Delegator stay's 8-1, Zacinto stay's 10-1, and Gladiatorus stay's 20-1 come post time in the Breeders Cup Mile.

  • Rossington · Both of O'Brien's horses, Rip Van Winkle and Mastercraftsman are for real. I've watched a lot of replays of races that they've either won or gave Sea The Stars all he wanted. Personally, although O'Brien doesn't seem to think so, I feel that Mastercraftsman is a bit more talented even then Rip Van Winkle. I plan to bet Mastercraftsman whether he's in the Dirt Mile or the Classic. I do, however, feel that Rip Van Winkle will be right there with the front runner's come Classic's end. If she sticks with the Classic, it would for me be difficult not to bet Zenyatta to at least hit the board. She handles the synthetics and most particularly Santa Anita race course as well as any horse in racing does. Since it seems that most good turf horses do well on the pro-ride surface, I also wouldn't rule Gio Ponti out of this race either. Beyond that, it's difficult to say. Einstein has done well here in the past having won the S.A. Handicap earlier in the year. Richard's Kid, although a longshot, has done exceedingly well on synthetics having won the Pacific Classic and finishing third in the Goodwood. Summer Bird and Quality Road are the question mark's to me in the race. Having raced exclusively on conventional dirt, no one really knows how they will fire on synthetics. If he does, I feel Quality Road may be sitting on a big race having been bogged down on off tracks his last two races. Colonel John is also proven on synthetics, although I think this particular group of horses may be a little better competition than he used to facing. All and all, this is a tough race to handicap with a lot of "what if" factors to consider. I anxiously await. · 1632 days ago ·
