What the Nation is saying about Gitano Hernando...

The last two winners of the Singapore Airlines International Cup (G1) both made positive impressions in the Dubai World Cup the same year they won the big race in Singapore, with Lizard’s Desire specifically earning his biggest win in the humid air. Marco Botti-trainee Planteur, always pointed to the Dubai World Cup, will now get a shot in the world’s richest race after Gitano Hernando’s defection a few days ago. I was sitting around on my computer today, watching some replays from the past two Dubai Carnivals at the new Meydan facility. The 2010 Dubai World Cup, won by Gloria De Campaeo, was one of the races I watched. It got me thinking. When Gitano Hernando went to Dubai in 2010, he was still unbeaten at the time, world wide, on synthetic surfaces. He had come to Santa Anita and won the G1 Goodwood Stakes, and had earned an automatic "win and your in" berth for the 09' Breeders Cup Classic with that win. What puzzles me is why in the world would did Marco Botti take Gitano Hernando back to the UK to race in a very weak, listed level, Lingfield Winter Derby? Instead of keeping the horse in America to run in the Breeders Cup Classic? You tell me, what could've prepared Gitano Hernando for that first crack at the Dubai World Cup in 2010 any better than having faced the likes of Zenyatta, Gio Ponti, Twice Over, Summer Bird, and all the other great horses in that were in that 09' Breeders Cup Classic?? JMO.
  • LAZMANNICK · Kind of a strange decision. He barely won the Goodwood though over Colonel John though at 18-1. It could be that maybe they didn't think he was ready to face the likes of Zen and Gio and Twice Over, etc. Sometimes a confidence builder, in his case maybe the confidence of winning, is the best thing in the long run. · 974 days ago ·

A cavalcade of racing stars, some from the 2011 Dubai World Cup meeting, are expected for the 1 May Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1) at Sha Tin.  Some of the expected starters include: Victoire Pisa (1st – Dubai World Cup), Presvis (1st – Dubai Duty Free), River Jetez (2nd – Dubai Du...Read More
  • medlocke · Fantastic field for this year's G1 Audemars Piguet Q.E.II Cup in Hong Kong on Sunday. Presvis is obviously not going to be in the race. Because he just ran in the G1 Champions Mile at Sha Tin a few days ago. That decision based on the fact that Luca Cumani wanted Ryan Moore to ride Presvis in Hong Kong. And with the English 2000 and 1000 Guineas coming up on Saturday and Sunday, Moore was already committed to ride in the UK. I also read that Dubai World Cup winner, Victoire Pisa, is not going to be entered in the race either. But still, a fantastic field. I think the horse to beat will be the local Hong Kong star, Ambitious Dragon. Still unbeaten with back to back victories over course and distance over Lucky Nine in the G1 Hong Kong Classic Cup and over Xtension in the G1 Hong Kong Derby. Ironically, Xtension and Lucky Nine just finished 1-2 in the G1 Champions Mile a few days ago. I think the horse for Ambitious Dragon to beat will be the Mike De Kock trained race-mare, River Jetez. She was brilliant in 3 starts in Dubai. Culminating in a win in the Balanchine, and a great 2nd place finish to Presvis in the Duty Free. I also believe the Jebel Hatta winner, and Duty Free 3rd, Wigmore Hall has a shot on his Dubai form as well. I don't see Gitano Hernando being a player in this race. Primarily because I believe he's a much better horse on a synthetic surface than he is on turf. TJMO. · 1090 days ago ·

  • medlocke · This year's Dubai World Cup really served to remind me how much I truly miss the race being run on the conventional dirt at Nad Al Sheba. Victoire Pisa had to come 5 or 6 wide to forge to the front early just to inject any pace at all into the race, as it was run at a terrible dottle. That move turned out to be the best tactical move of the race. As Victoire Pisa took the lead and never looked back. · 1122 days ago ·

  • ajump08 · medlocke, just like the Derby these trainers for the most part don't want a peak performance before the big day. Godolphin doesn't wan't to overdue it with him, but I do question if Mendip as good at 10 furlongs as 8 furlongs. He should definitely win his race though with division leader Skysurfer skipping this one and training up to the Godolphin Mile. · 1148 days ago ·

  • medlocke · I think a new era had began for the Dubai World Cup in 2010 at Meydan. What happened in 2010, I fear, will now be likely in many Dubai World Cup's to follow. Horses that show up early for the carnival and get two or three run's under their belt on Meydan's tapeta surface will be more of a factor in deciding the outcome of the Dubai World Cup than horses that ship all the way to Dubai for just that one race. Take last year's DWC for example. Gloria De Campeao, Lizard's Desire, and Allybar ran #1,2, 3. All three of those horses showed up at the beginning of the carnival and ran well in handicaps prior to DWC night. Gio Ponti's 4th place finish, and Mastery's 5th place finish were best among the shippers. I personally think this year is likely to be very much the same. Mike De Kock already has 3 likely starters for the DWC that are burning the tapeta up. Bold Silvano, winner of the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 2, Musir, 2nd in the Firebreak Stakes and winner of last year's UAE 2000 Guineas and Derby, and Golden Sword who has one win and one place at this year's carnival. Then there's Godolphin's Mendip. Who won the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 1, and took 2 races on the tapeta last season. He really look's the kind of horse that could be a big player in this year's DWC to me. Gitano Hernando finished 6th in last year's DWC, and 5th in this year's Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 2. But he's had troubled trips in both races, and is an outstanding synthetic surface horse. That's why I believe Gio Ponti's connection's should already have him in Dubai preparing to prep in the Al Maktoum Challenge Rd. 3 instead of in the U.S. prepping on turf. JMO. · 1160 days ago ·
