What the Nation is saying about Gate Dancer...

Dude, I made tv's picture of Gate Dancer my screensaver. Not only is it a great shot of Gate Dancer, it's also a great shot of Pincay. I've stared at it for about an hour now.

Folks, go to Gate Dancer's profile and see an awesome post parade photo taken up close and personal by travel_vic. It's a snapshot of approximately 8 minutes before history was made. Go to Gate Dancer's profile and click "photos." It's the far right tab. Thanks tv.

Is it just me...or has the level of true, top competition thinned recently? Look at Gate Dancer for instance. Every time he went to the gate he had a very good probability of several of the following being there: Swale, Precisionist, Wild Again, Slew O' Gold, Turkoman, Proud Truth, Chief's Crown, Vanlandingham, Creme Fraiche, Stephan's Oddyssy, etc. And I KNOW I'm forgetting several legitimate others.

  • LAZMANNICK · If there was one thing about Sword Dancer it was that in an era when top horses carried weight, the most weight he ever carried was 129 lbs. and the most he ever won with was 126. He and Nashua were oddities at that time in that they were HOY winners that never carried 130 lbs. or more. Or course we would never see a horse even carry 130 lbs. in this day and age, at least not in N/A. · 262 days ago ·

I had the privilege of watching Gate Dancer compete in the Oaklawn Handicap against Turkoman and Red Attack. He was such a ham in the saddle area and during the parade. He was a great racehorse. When I go back and watch the Breeder's Cup races, he was obviously the fastest in the stretch. He catches Wild Again and Slew O Gold with no problems, he just has no interest in passing on by. He looks like he's jogging next to them. Next year when he gets the lead mid-stretch, he practically throws out an anchor until he has a buddy to run with. Once Proud Truth gets there, Gate Dancer goes with him in what appears to be a trot. Oh, if he wasn't such a silly boy!
  • travel_vic · he was a nut. Only one to get Dq'd in the Derby in recent memory for mugging Fali Time then AGAIN in the Breeder's Cup Classic. I was fifteen feet from it as Laffit yanked him out and he continued to lug in on Sle O'Gold while the winner lugged out the rail making that poor Slew bounce like a billiard ball. DQ'd. NEXT year at the BC Classic he did the same thing to a lesser degree with McCarron up. He had the lead at the top of the lane over Turkoman, but Proudn truth blew by the both of them. Poor trainer and his nutty horse. Wore ear plugs. shadow roll, spit the bit device etc and could rarely run a straight line. Entertaining owever. · 269 days ago ·

Before he ever ran, Slew O’ Gold was destined for greatness. He was a great looking son of the incomparable Seattle Slew and his dam was Alluvial, a daughter of Buckpasser who had already produced the top runner, Coastal. Most horses with these type of looks and bloodlines seldom live up to the loft...Read More

May 14, 1984 So there he was, all by himself except for Swale, looking suddenly far older than his 70 years—a drawn, frail, ashen man standing in the winner's circle at Churchill Downs with the cameras snapping, the pale wind blowing and the crowds surging toward him, calling his name.
